Ever realize the first day a job is not for you? - weary

Posted: Jun 01, 2010

Did you ever start a job and realize immediately that it is not the right one for you, that you will be miserable in it? Too many crazy account specifics. Too much bumbling around with the software to get to the actual typing. Too much crap. The thing is, I am so broke beyond belief. But this job is just awful. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.

My goodness, I am so sick of this profession. Sick of taking test after test with company after company and them never responding back. Sick of the low pay. Sick of the typing. Sick of everything about MT.

Yes, I have, but..... - sm

I try to look at it as a learning experience. Keep applying while you keep this job.

I have learned that if I'm fed up with one aspect of MT, then it does affect all of the other aspects. Sometimes, I get to the point where I want to just throw in the towel all together and go waitress. I am dead serious and that is not to degrade waitresses.

Sometimes, I feel like the fed up goes along with being alone while I work. I have no one to vent to and no one who really cares or knows what I'm even talking about.

I vent to my husband but I know he's tired of hearing it. My friends think I have it made to work from home and not have to use daycare.

I feel like it never ends. However, when I get to feeling "sick" then I kick it in high gear or try to anyway and take one thing at a time.

Don't worry about being fast at a new job, worry about learning. If the MTSO doesn't like it, that is their loss.

Hugs to you!

I didnt just start a job, but know exactly how you feel. Horrible, ridiculous account specifics for every single worktype slows you down, plus bad typing platform taking so much time to get through to just type. I have been searching too, testing, sweating bullets, and so far NOTHING. I am sick of being an MT and wouldnt recommend it to anyone!

It seems like this account-specifics garbage is the - norm these days. I struggle with it - sm

daily, and have been an MT for many, many years. So although I've got no problem with transcribing actual dictation, the constant hopping from account to account, nitpicky account specific to nitpicky doctor, and wading through all the demographics and software sludge is making a low-paying job even lower. Today I couldn't deal with the problems at THEIR end any longer, and just turned off the PC and went out back and did some weed-whacking. I made no money today, but at least the backyard is no longer a jungle.

I love your screename... - weary

I'm a trapped typer too. And I agree that a lot of the time, it's not the dictation, but the account specifics and all the other bull you have to go through. LOL at the weed wacking.
It's very therapeutic..... - s/m

... weed-whacking, that is! Putting that powerful machine in your hands, and then firing that puppy up!

Especially those big, juicy broadleaf weeds that sort of look like flat lettuce. I love blasting those things to smithereens. Just like I'd like to do to whoever dreamed up the crappy software I have to struggle with everyday for work.

I don't do MT but the weed-whacking works for me in my job too. - Keeps me sane on the crazy days

[ In Reply To ..]
No matter what you do for a living, some days you would rather not do it at all or ever again. On those days I love to take it out on the weeds. That is so much healthier than taking it out on people or furniture.

Too much - kv

It can be all too much and not worth it. Can you go back to school while you keep this job? I think that is the answer for everyone, although you could conceivably get a job in retail or bartending and make more money than this. Used to be a good job. Not any more.

Where I work I get so many different work types it slows me down to make sure I have selected the correct worktype and it gets sent to the correct facility. Other MTs only do one account, copy and paste from old reports into new reports, get lines added from using physician templates. But that is not for everyone, just a special few. Other than seniority, which at some point is superfluous if everyone has been around 10+ years and all deserve to be treated as equal parts of the team....

Good luck.

Thanks everyone! nm - weary

No one should have to do a job they hate - Love my job

[ In Reply To ..]
I came to MT from a job I really hated. So I really feel for anybody that feels that way about transcription. This is just a great fit for me.

But seriously, if you hate it that much, it is worth looking at other options. No one should have to stay in a job they hate and just make themselves miserable. There is always something else out there that could be right for you!! Keep looking, opportunities hide in strange places sometimes!

Thanks, I guess I needed... - weary

To hear that it's okay to get out of something that's making you miserable.

You know what, there was no work on my account today either. I had to beg for a few files. No work on my first day doesn't give a good first impression.

Well Said! Lots of us switched to MT from other jobs we hated - I love working hard at home

[ In Reply To ..]
I found MT to be a blessing. I love being able to work at home doing my best at something I love.

I just got an e-mail from an MT friend who is gushing on about her job and says that it - Saved Her Life

[ In Reply To ..]
This MT got a job working from home. She loves the job and is now healthier because she is able to control her environment, food and exercise, better. Her attitude is better and her emotional health is also improved.

It may just depend on the job you have. If you have a terrible one, don't wait! Just find something else, even if it isn't MT. Don't stay in a job that is miserable to you. Also don't assume that just because it's a terrible job to you that it will be to everyone. Someone else will probably think of it as their dream job.

I hope you find your own dream job very soon.

I never assumed... - weary

That "just because it's a terrible job to you that it will be to everyone." I don't know where you got that from.

Quit after one week. - chuka

Same kind of thing. Crummy platform, endless meaningless details, tons of e-mails and phone calls, etc. Life is short...

Can I ask how you broke the news to them? - Kinda suck at quitting

[ In Reply To ..]
May I ask how you broke the news to them? I've been training for 2 weeks and waited a couple of months for the position but if it doesn't shape itself up by Friday, it's actually going to cost me money and I sure don't need THAT.

They've all been nice and accommodating, but their shortcomings on staffing and attention to detail are becoming more painfully obvious to me daily and I'm just too organized to deal with the stress and chaos a disorganized MTSO can bring into my life (especially since it's just part-time, I have a terrific FT position with a great MTSO).

So, how did you break it to them? Care to share? It's not like they've treated me horribly or maligned me or anything, I just don't deal with disorganization or lack of attention to details or overstaffing well. :/

great MTSO - curious

[ In Reply To ..]
What is your great MTSO, if you don't mind sharing?

Quit after 2 weeks - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I quit Transcend after 2 weeks, it was just a weekend job like you, and similar to you, they were just really unorganized and I had a hard time getting my QA back or questions answered. I was offered another position with a local MTSO that I just couldn't pass up so I just sent my Lead and the HR lady an e-mail saying that I appreciated their time in hiring and training me but I was not going to be able to continue my employment with them. I told them I had gotten an offer from a company that I couldn't pass up and that I would be happy to send my foot pedal back.

And that was that!

I did not go into specifics. - chuka

[ In Reply To ..]
I kept it very general and businesslike. For example, "it looks like it won't work out," or "it's not quite what I expected and it now appears to be a mismatch." Stuff like that.

They were real nice about everything and accepted it without questioning.

Oh, chica, going thru the same exact thing today and - SO disappointed

[ In Reply To ..]
Had really high hopes for this place, good reputation...

But organization is painfully NOT one of their attributes. What's that saying, the right hand has no clue what the left hand is doing or something like that.

It's a side job that I was taking just for a change from my usual and the place has a solid reputation. However, I suspect the accounts are overstaffed and, as I said earlier, TOTAL disorganization. I spent 9 hours today doing 3-4 reports due to lack of communication and (I suspect) overhiring.

I don't want to get into too many details as I'm giving it til Friday to see if it turns itself around (a reach, to say the least), but....

I RELATE, MY FRIEND!!!

And really disappointed since I've waited a couple of months to get rolling for today.

Good luck...to both of us!

I agree! - luvzminis

I tried MT work for a short while, but try as I might, I knew it wasn't for me. Much was due to my medical condition and stiffness, but the more I read about the poor pay and problems, along with the off shoring and company problems, it seems to me this is a sinking ship. Very few people seem to be happy with their jobs, most don't make much for hours of work, and only a tiny percentage seem to get anything out of the job. That's just my opinion and observations, and I do wish the best for those who choose to continue with MT work.

MQ Execs - When Will You Realize That You Have
Mar 08, 2010

The hardest thing for executives to do is to acknowledge the need to take a new direction. Study after study has shown the propensity of the people at the top to fiddle around the edges of failed initiatives trying to "fix" them - but, like Nero, they fiddle while Rome burns. To call Medquist's history "spotty", especially in the area of employee relations, but also with respect to some of it's technology initiatives, would sadly understate the case. Do They Realize Making It "mandatory" Will Tick A Lot Of People Off

This "mandatory" OT is just the type of thing to tip a lot of employees to the breaking point, resulting in some quitting.  This will just cause a cycle and get worse.   I wish businesses were like pirate ships, where if the workers were fed up enough and were to collectively agree, they could mutiny and overthrow the captain, putting one of their own in charge who they believe would do better.  I don't believe there are many of us who could do any worse than MM's curre ...
