Do you transcribe in silence or do you prefer many "goings on" around? - marge

Posted: Jun 07, 2015

I notice so many who talk about doctors dictating with kids screaming in the background, docs talking to other docs, alarms going off, etc.

It got me thinking about when I first started out.  I had to have absolute silence.  Kids had to be in bed, hubby gone, TV off, etc.   My gf said, "NO WAY!  Turn on the TV!  You have to get used to hearing other things going on so you don't restrict yourself to only being able to transcribe in absolute silence."

So... my question is do you like it quiet or do you mind noise/craziness when you're working?

I now type when kids are fighting; piano, trombone, trumpet, electric guitar are being practiced; TV is on.  When the kids are screaming on the docs file it doesn't even phase me.   I told someone one time that my doc likes to dictate from the hockey rink.    They said they wouldn't do it.  I'm sure it probably takes me a bit longer but for the most part it doesn't really bother me anymore.

I have to have something in the background, music, - or low volume TV...n/m

Depends on Account - Prefer silence though.

I have a clinic account that I have worked for many years and know the docs so well I usually know what they are going to say before they speak, so don't have to try to decipher what they are saying. The audio is also very clear and easy to hear, so working in a noisy house is not a big deal.

My acute care account, however, has very bad audio and several of the docs speak very softly, especially the ESLs. Just when I figure out these docs and get comfortable transcribing for them, I get switched to new docs and get to start the learning process all over. It is very frustrating trying to make out the dictation when there is a lot of external noise going on. If I turn the audio up, the static hurts my ears, so I only work this account when I have a quiet house to work in.

I was very disturbed when someone dictated from a hallway outside an ER and I could hear a patient screaming in agony. Otherwise, I prefer some noise in the background. For the past several years I've been doing mostly proofing. Since I suffer from tinnitus, I can't stand silence. I keep my iPod going with music at a soft enough level to hear it (and offset the ringing) but not loud enough to disturb anybody. Also helps not to feel lonely!

i prefer quiet but I have gotten used to my son being in the - room with the TV on

Which Expander Do You Prefer?

I'm thinking of switching to either Instant Text or Shorthand from the generic Bayscribe expander that I've been using.  Back in the day PRD+ did everything that I needed for it to do and more.  Which expander do you prefer (doesn't have to be one of the ones mentioned above)?  Thanks in advance.   ...

Unless I am missing it, not seeing the patient's age already calculated is a major flaw.  That and I miss being able to see the amount of reports lined up.  Otherwise, I think it will be better overall.  I definitely am not going to miss those darn header keys.  Of course, now I have to go through a bunch of shorthand entries and fix them. ...

MDI/Transcend-The Silence Is Deafening....
Jan 29, 2010

Transition date is MONDAY.   I really expected to be bombarded by emails this week from the powers that be with transition details, expectations, reassurance that things are going smoothly, as planned, etc., or at the very least a little rah, rah, sis-boom-bah, go team type stuff.  Unless said emails are inadvertantly missing me, there has been nothing but SILENCE from MDI and Transcend other than the occasional brow beating about TAT and time sheet training.  Weird ...

How Would You Transcribe This Please? SM
Jan 18, 2012

I am working on an account where I have had literally no training, on a program where I have had literally no training so I have no idea if it is verbatim or not. The doctor dictates "He was seen last by me in December of this year." Okay, it was actually December of last year or 2011, I would assume.
