Do you think there is any benefit to - SK

studying for a "Certificate in Electronic Medical Records?" I'm not sure coding is for me; it sounds like accounting, not my strong suit. Am having to switch gears from MT to something else soon. Thanks.
I can give you my personal opinion - sm

I think that "certificate in Electronic Medical Records' is the new trend. Government money is available, so people are swarming into it only to find out that those promised or guaranteed jobs don't exist. If they do exist, they don't have openings.
In other words, it's a sucker's game, a scam. The only people benefiting from all that PR about it are the people you pay for the seminars and workshops and courses.
Coding makes more sense because there really are jobs. It's nothing at all like accounting. It doesn't remotely resemble it. It isn't math. It's using your brain in a different way from medical transcription, but it's all about diseases and diagnoses.
Coding is going to require more knowledge than ever before in terminology, A&P, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
Back when I first started in coding, the employers all would only consider nurses who had at least some coding education. Now, it's the coding credentials that matter more than anything else, because they prove that you have a solid understanding of what is necessary to be a good coder. Just being a nurse isn't enough anymore. ICD-10 is going to require even more than ever knowledge of all of those. That means it's going to require a very solid coding education, but I believe it will be worth it.
You also need to keep in mind that you have to work hard at getting a job, any job, after you get your education. There are some people getting burned from scams right now of people promising jobs which don't materialize. Don't fall for any of that. Just get the best education you can, whether it's in EMR or coding (my choice), or insurance reimbursement, and then get out there and wear out your shoes going to HR offices and your fingers searching for jobs online. If you'll do that, you'll be one of the people who will be on here giving advice to others on how to be successful.
You've been most helpful - thanks for your insight.

Our local jr. college is offering a new course in medical coding. I'll check into that, now that I know a bit more about it, thanks to you. :)
Just make sure that graduates of the school are passing the CCS exam - sm

Talk to the school and find out if graduates of that course tend to be successful in passing the CCS exam. If not, don't do it. It doesn't matter why they don't, and most courses don't prepare students to the CCS level. It just matters that they do, or don't. Without a CCS, you aren't going to have as many, if any, job options.
This is a new program for them - SK

and this fall is their first quarter of classes, so they don't have a record of successful job placements in that field yet. Their info says that graduates will qualify to take the AAPC test (American Assn. of Professional Coders). Have you heard of that? They don't mention CCS.
Yes, I have heard of it - sm

The CPC credential (through AAPC) is a good one to have, as long as you also have a CCS (through AHIMA), which is much tougher to pass.
I don't think you need to take a course to qualify for the AAPC test. You should, of course, but I don't think it's a requirement. Almost any school teaches to that level. That just isn't enough to get you a job. You need the CCS.
The CPC is good. You want it too. It just isn't enough on its own.
There are discussions about that on the Coding board here if you want to read back for a few months. You'll get a good idea of the difference.
Too many coding courses that I've been seeing have been trying to teach faster, condensed courses, and the students are coming out of those courses unable to code well enough to get a job. That is why the employers want a CCS. They've already been burned over and over again with people with nothing but a CPC. They are glad for you to have it, as long as you have a CCS too.
I will check into that - thanks again for your help!

Free access to ONC Health IT Workforce Curriculum Components - dmj

You may be interested in the free access to the ONC IT Workforce Components here:
http://www.onc-ntdc.org/home
These are now freely available. Be careful, there are people/companies out there trying to "re-package" these components and selling them to unknowing MTs for a profit which I think is disgraceful and unethical.
Thanks for the info. - Not the OP.

Benefit Rate Jul 13, 2010I thought I was prepared for the benefit rate letter. As far as I could tell, my pay had been at least the same and once in a while actually a few dollars higher. So, how can my benefit rate go DOWN $1 PER HOUR??????????? I was prepared that it would not be higher, but I think this is just plain wrong. Like the other poster said - wouldn't I have noticed if I was making $80-88 per paycheck LESS (80-88 hours full time average at minus $1 per hour)?? What a bunch of hooey. ...
New Benefit Rate Feb 15, 2012Are you kidding me? Now I am down to $10 an hour for my benefit rate. I pulled out all my old rates and it shows a steady decline. Seriously, it CAN'T be all me. I have dropped from $17.25 to $16.16 to 14.39 to 13.58 to 12.56 to 10.60 to now 10.00. Is everyone else going through the same? I type the same as I always have for years and years and years, the only change is this ASR which apparently is the death of me. ...
Benefit Rates Jan 29, 2013Has anyone received a letter about calculating your new benefit rate? I have had the same rate since probably last spring. I don't think they are calculating them every six months even though they say they do. I went on vacay in June and I am making the same benefit rate now that I was then. That was 8 months ago. I know for a fact that my benefit rate is now higher than it was then, maybe that is why. It is cheaper for them to keep it lower. ...

Benefit Rate Dropping Again Jan 12, 2010For those of us that are still hanging on by a thread, did your benefit rate fall? I just got my letter...lost another $1. I know that doesn't seem much but over the last few changes I have lost $5...just keeps going down. I guess I shouldn't care...I have had to use all of my PTO to make up time. I am probably going to be performance managed (or fired, not sure) because my CCM said we could clock in and out all day to keep from putting in NJA tickets (so we wou ...

Nuance's New Benefit Plans... Jan 12, 2011As you all may know, Nuance (formerly known as Focus) has acquired Encompass and OSI companies. So, we get this email today stating a company who formerly handled OSI's HR dept, payroll, benefits, etc. is going to now be handling ours (Nuance). Well as a result, we are going with a different ins company for health benefits. We previously had Blue Cross Blue Shield. Found Out Why My Benefit Rate Went Down Jan 23, 2014Apparently they count work availability hours in your benefit rate calculation so you are getting dinged for not being able to work. How Cherry-picking MTs Benefit Me. Feb 07, 2014On 1 account that I work on, there are a couple of dictators who are the worst of the worst. They actually should be reported to their superiors. Many times each day, these reports are downloaded by MTs who simply return them and rather have no work than try to decipher what these idiots spew out. I admit they are very difficult and many times impossible, as I see where QA returns them to the client with blanks, even after additional ears have given a listen.

A Nice Benefit To Magic Jack Mar 17, 2010While it may not work for actual long-distance phone calls, especially for use with C-phones, Go-to-meeting, and such as that, I found a nice benefit today to having the Magic Jack. Recent "lab Seven" Trial Did Not Show Benefit To Radiotherapy Oct 14, 2013There is controversial literature regarding the benefit of radiation, with the benefit of survival seen in the ECOG trial published by Loehrer, et al.
