Well, here I am-45, recently lost my job due to one of the big MTSOs taking over at the hospital I worked at, and I am seriously considering going back to school. I was thinking medical reimbursement and coding, but have been reading on some posts about that profession going the same way transcription has. I would hate to put all of the time, effort, and money into another degree, just to be in the same boat in a couple of years, yet older and even more uneasy about changing to another profession once again. My question is this-how many of you think it would be worth it to go ahead and get the degree?
I have been struggling to think of anything else I would want to do besides medical reimbursement and coding. I have had two other thoughts in the past, which because of this recent job loss I have been entertaining again; 1) I have always wanted to run some sort of shelter, perhaps helping displaced battered women and children, etc., and 2) Start my own errand service. So, with these two options dancing around in my head, I am thinking of furthering my education in either human services or small business management. It is a little overwhelming trying to decide what to do. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Interesting question. - A Partial Answer
[ In Reply To ..]In your message, you lumped coding with reimbursement. That puts it into the Billing Department of a hospital or clinic. That's an entirely different animal than Medical Coding which is done in the HIM Department of a hospital. Those codes are used for billing, of course, but these are not "billers" doing the coding. They are Medical Coders, preferably certified (CCS), which is a professional career. The Billing Office is fine, but is a clerical job, not a professional career.
I like your ideas about the shelter and the errand service. Good luck starting a new busiess in this economic environment, but why not? Consider all of these options against your personal needs and then go with your gut. I wish you the greatest success no matter what you decide.

[ In Reply To ..]I was intrigued by your errand service idea. I have a personal assistant who cleans the house, runs errands, etc. and I give her $20/hour. (She uses her car.) I realize that the California salary mindset is a bit higher than the rest of the nation, but I bet you could do well for yourself. You would need to be bonded (an easy thing to get, assuming you have never been convicted of a felony, etc., which I am sure you haven't--smiling here--and there are lots of busy professionals who would take you up on it, I would bet).

[ In Reply To ..]I'm getting an associates, cert I and II in chemical dependency and on to a BA in psychology focus on chemical dependency Christian studies. All online. I will have my fist cert completed this spring and 3/4 of the way finished with my associates. With a BA in psych, you have a lot of options for human services. Just a thought. Oh there are also behavioral health technician certifications.

[ In Reply To ..]Thanks to those who replied. Yes, I am leaning more towards the errand service. We have a small business development company in the small town I live in here in Indiana and I am going to try to have a meeting with the administrator. I have heard that they are really helpful, and upon doing a bit of investigation I found out that there is a group of business women who mentor others who want to better themselves, etc. They usually focus on the younger women, but hopefully they will give me the chance to pitch my idea and they can give me great pointers.
I am so saddened by the way that the transcription profession has taken a turn for the worst because I absolutely used to love my job, but I can't keep on with that. I have to pick up and start all over again, having faith that everything will work out for the best!

[ In Reply To ..]with a BA in Psychology/Christian Counseling, however, I will be going on to get my masters as that is what many professionals have told me it will take to be able to get a good job. There are many choices for the master's degree after you have finished a BA in psychology. I am leaning through counseling in the school for grades K-12 (which I have been told there is a need for more counselors in the school system) or social service for my masters. I take all my classes online through Tennessee Temple University. I am not sure where I am going to go for my masters yet. Just started researching that to see what would be the best fit for me.

[ In Reply To ..]I am going to go to Harrison College, possibly online--not sure yet. It used to be Indiana Business College, where I had received two associate degrees back in the mid 90s when my boys were little.
Luckily, I qualify for 100% financial aid and I had graduated before with a 3.9 grade point average, so they are really wanting me to come back. Exciting, but scary a bit at this point in my life.

I was switched to new accounts back in March, a group of long-term subacute hospitals with the same name and locations all over the country. HIGH HIGH ESL. So, progressive part time anyone? Obviously, the PTO accrual (which is pretty pitiful even at full strength) is way less, but when you have to keep using all your PTO anyway to make up the paycheck and your lph goes down because of that, what's the point of that?
