Anyone know what to charge for reviewing med records? - sm

Posted: Mar 20, 2014

I went to see an ortho yesterday regarding neck surgery and they approached me about reviewing their medical records for the doctors.  I have no clue what to charge - per page, per hour or ?  I currently work transcribing IME, AME and QME reports, but that's different.  Thoughts on what to charge or where to search for comparable rates?  Thanks!

what would the result of your review be? - puzzled

What are you reviewing the records for? Completeness? To extract data? To code the chart? I couldn't guess what you should charge unless I knew what you were going to be doing. (I'm a former CPC coder and auditor, experience with chart completion as well)

Depends on what you are reviewing them for - sm

Reviews of records are sometimes done to gather information for research studies, but that would be unlikely in an office. That type of review is often done by research-assistant sorts, often graduate students, etc., and pays modest amounts.

Is it possible that he did not mean records from his own office, but records available, say, electronically, from a larger facility, like a university medical center, or copies of records from someplace like that? Is his office actually part of a larger medical center?

The only other possibility that comes to mind is reviewing them for compliance with documentation standards for Medicare, etc. In other words, he may be worried about upcoming audits or revenue denials, or have been smacked with an audit, repayments, and fines already -- highly likely, by the way -- and needs to review those records as part of his defense.

THAT type of review is usually done by a certified coder, usually one experienced in that sort of thing, sometimes one that is also a lawyer. He should know that, and the stakes are so high that if he is defending an audit, he should already have a lawyer who would recommend someone to do the review.

Just a run of the mill compliance review pays very well. I have seen megalomaniac physicians who think they know everything try to do this themselves by telling someone to look for, though.

These are outside hard copy records - - sm

for IME/AME/QME reports. I would be summarizing them for the doctors to review and put into his report. Sometimes the records are 12-18 inches high and you have to go through them page by page, separate the specialties, and put them in chronological order.

Hourly? - Rose

Hourly seems the only fair way since the jobs can vary so much in complexity.
Yes, i'm thinking hourly, but - sm

just don't know what a fair hourly rate would be. That is where I'm stuck.
Hourly - diana

At least 15.00 an hour, at most 20.00 an hour. Your knowledge in IME, etc., is worth that much. Your time is valuable and you should be paid accordingly.

Reviewing Old Emails...
Apr 18, 2013

Slightly paranoid about being audited now since I'm reporting NJA instead of working 24/7.  It's amazing just how many reminder emails we get and how many minute details for each account.  I'm forwarding to my email to have just in case I'm ever managed out and need to defend myself along with the good and sometimes bad audits I've had.  I'm human.  Don't make huge amount of errors, but definitely not perfect...   ...

How Do You Charge?

I am an independent subcontractor with one large account.  The hospital is switching to VR and I have been able to keep the account, but I have no idea what to charge, how to charge, or where to find info about this.  This is all happening over the next few weeks so I need to come up with a plan.  I currently charge a flat rate per line, and have not increased my fee in many years.  However, if I do editing work, do I charge per report?  I don't have a clue.  H ...

How Much Should I Charge?
Dec 06, 2012

Hello!  I am a fairly new MT (2 years experience) and I am currently doing IC work.  I have been approached by a physician (that I used to work for as a medical assistant) to do her transcription for her as she has gone out on her own and has a private practice now.  It is a family practice, so pretty basic office visit notes.  My question is what should I charge her per line?  OR should I charge per report, per page, or what?  I'm not sure yet that her EM ...

Help! What Should I Charge?
May 14, 2013

I have an opportunity to work with a local, successful Midwestern 6-physician ENT practice.  They want to know what I charge per line.  I'm currently with a larger MTSO and have been for years.  Back in the good old days I could charge my own clients by the gross line, 15, 17, 18 cents.  But those days are gone.  I don't want to lose the ENT group to an MTSO or other middleman. What is a fair rate for transcription (with no delivery or printing) these days?&nb ...

How To Charge For EMR Work
Oct 23, 2013

I currently transcribe from home for a  local ortho clinic.  When they switch to EMR and I can convince them to keep me to transcribe, what is the best way to charge for my work?  Per patient entry (how much?) or still do the per line thing using cut and paste from Word.  I need to keep it simple and relatively cheap in order to try to keep their work.  I certainly do not want them thinking they should be able to do their own starting at a keyboard while in the exam room ...

Best Way To Charge In 2014
Jul 21, 2014

Hi - I was just contacted by a neuropsychologist I worked for years ago in the office, about transcribing reports for him from home.  I have scoured the boards and I did not see anything current about what to charge. I live in western PA.  He says the reports are somewhat repetitive. If you charge by the page, does that mean half a page is the same price as a full page? I thought by the page would be simplest for calculating what they owe, but not sure.  Setting up how to receive ...
