Keystroke Charge - Curious

Posted: Feb 05, 2013

Has anyone heard of charging for using the shift key as a keystroke, meaning if you capitalize something, you basically get 2 characters instead of 1?

No, never heard of it. New concept? - -

How would you calculate it? Doesn't show up on character count, whereas spaces do.

Well, there is a software called Abacus that allows you to count bold, italics, and capitalized letters in with your 65 characters. But, I have never heard of counting this before, just counting te usual spaces and returns that go into the 65 character.

I use Abacus and you can charge for shifted chars, too - nm

Snow Bunny. Since you have heard of it, how common of a practice is it?

Wow, what a concept. So we have been getting ripped off this way all along and all these companies can do is complain and find ways to make the line counts lower. They will never realize how good of a deal they were getting until they lose us all.

I only said I've heard of it - Snow Bunny (the original)

Well, actually, I remember having a job over years ago that utilized that. I was working in an office typing, I believe, medical reports, and our keystrokes were being clocked in. But ... that was before the the abbreviation expanders.

You would need to make absolutely certain that the software calculates keystrokes on the page rather than keystrokes on the keyboard.

Aren't they called weighted characters? - sm

Didn't the former MedQuist get in big trouble for this a while back?

I could be wrong, but I know there was some some lawsuit or something regarding charging the client more for some characters, but not paying the MTs for same.

Keystroke Counter? (sm)
Sep 08, 2013

VR drafts have BECOME so far off what was clearly dictated that it is taking LONGER to edit than it would to just transcribe it.  Not only do I have to re-transcribe it, but delete full sentences and phrase that sound nothing like what was clearly dictated!  As MTs we used to be paid for our keystrokes which was fair.  Today we probably put in twice the keystrokes we are paid for.  Anyone know of a cheap keystroke counter as I think this would be very useful in a suit again ...

It Must Be Keystroke's Week To Be Bashed. Sm
Jul 02, 2010

Every company is bashed here.  Is no one happy anywhere or is it mostly unhappy people who post here. When someone says they like a company, they are beat down.  When they defend a company, they are management.  When they are happy, they must be lying. Geesh, it's like taking a downer coming here.  I used to get good information, now I don't know what to believe. ...

How To Make A Small Keystroke Macro In MS Word
Aug 13, 2014

MS Word 2007,  I have the autocorrect lightning icon at the top.   Instead of mousing up there and clicking each time,  I would like to use a prior keystroke combination I had years ago at hospitals of  "ctrl, ctrl" and autocorrect starts.   Is it just a simple macro to create to do this,  or something more complicated?    I'm re-creating an autocorrect list from scratch after a complete reinstall, so I'd like to save my hands, time, ...

Keystroke Command For Calendar In EditScript Date Field?
Jun 29, 2013

Does anybody have any idea what I accidentally hit to get the calendar dropdown for the current month *without* using the mouse after hitting Alt-D to get to the date field?  It was totally keystrokes only, I was nowhere near the mouse, but it was just a fat-fingered mistake and I can't replicate it again, after trying multiple combos.  (It was a report where the date was originally grayed out, by the way, because I needed to do a patient search.)   It took me years to f ...

How Much Should I Charge?
Dec 06, 2012

Hello!  I am a fairly new MT (2 years experience) and I am currently doing IC work.  I have been approached by a physician (that I used to work for as a medical assistant) to do her transcription for her as she has gone out on her own and has a private practice now.  It is a family practice, so pretty basic office visit notes.  My question is what should I charge her per line?  OR should I charge per report, per page, or what?  I'm not sure yet that her EM ...

Help! What Should I Charge?
May 14, 2013

I have an opportunity to work with a local, successful Midwestern 6-physician ENT practice.  They want to know what I charge per line.  I'm currently with a larger MTSO and have been for years.  Back in the good old days I could charge my own clients by the gross line, 15, 17, 18 cents.  But those days are gone.  I don't want to lose the ENT group to an MTSO or other middleman. What is a fair rate for transcription (with no delivery or printing) these days?&nb ...

How To Charge For EMR Work
Oct 23, 2013

I currently transcribe from home for a  local ortho clinic.  When they switch to EMR and I can convince them to keep me to transcribe, what is the best way to charge for my work?  Per patient entry (how much?) or still do the per line thing using cut and paste from Word.  I need to keep it simple and relatively cheap in order to try to keep their work.  I certainly do not want them thinking they should be able to do their own starting at a keyboard while in the exam room ...

Best Way To Charge In 2014
Jul 21, 2014

Hi - I was just contacted by a neuropsychologist I worked for years ago in the office, about transcribing reports for him from home.  I have scoured the boards and I did not see anything current about what to charge. I live in western PA.  He says the reports are somewhat repetitive. If you charge by the page, does that mean half a page is the same price as a full page? I thought by the page would be simplest for calculating what they owe, but not sure.  Setting up how to receive ...
