Advice on shift change - dmc

I have been asked to consider a shift change, from daytime to 2nd shift where they need me more. I am wondering if any of you have done this kind of shift change and what the pros and cons were as far as work load, work in general and also how did it change your family life, good or bad? How long did it take you to get used to the change, etc. Did you find you didn't like it and went day to day shift or were not allowed to go back to day shift, etc. Any and all information would help me in making this decision for myself and my family. Thanks for your help!

I have considered taking a second shift job but I would never see my children during the week since they get home from school at 3 and 3:30 and I would not be home until long after they are in bed. I worked evenings before having kids and it was a slower pace in general, nice to not have as many interruptions or stats to do. Wasn't an easy adjustment for me though, really prefer the early morning shift.

I made the shift change, but let me say I am 54. It took my body about 3 months to really get used to it (I had been working 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. before, quite a change!) I don't have little ones at home anymore. I like having mornings free to run errands, doctor's visits, meeting friends for lunch/coffee. What I don't like is not being able to attend any evening functions, grandkids activities, etc. I did this because I kept running out of work and I seldom run out now. However, I am not allowed to move back to days, and I switched 2 years ago. You will need to look at your children's ages, if you are married your husband's hours, and when do you spend the most time with them? Everyone's life is different, it is hard to say!

I have worked the second shift for years and love, love, love it. I have never been a morning person, am much more of an owl than a lark. Yet I am not enough of an owl that I want to stay up all night, so second shift is for me! I have time in the morning to get groceries, deal with family issues, etc. and then work 3-11. For me, it is the best shift ever invented. Others may be larks and prefer the mornings, but for me, my productivity soared (I actually did a rating one time and I do about 60 more lines per hour on second shift than in mornings). This just me, and other folks may actually getting up early. But I was really pleased when I got on the second shift and will never go back to mornings! Good luck to you.

She demanded schedule changes of all M-F MTs because of end-of-the-week/weekend TAT problems. I wasn't concerned because my entire schedule is for those troublesome days. Now I get an email that she moved too many people to my shift, and she wants me to change!!????? It is so frustrating working here on so many levels. I was wondering if it's really worth it to work the 3rd shift? Does the additional CPL really make that much of a difference. Does the workload stay steadier during that time? I figure they are specific hours of the day - like day, swing, graveyard shifts - but what are the hours, generally? I have only worked as an IC with TAT. Totally unhappy with current company, but do love my shift. Most jobs advertised are for 2nd and 3rd shift. Anyone know of companies that would hire for very early morning or possible split shifts? Too old at this time to think about trying night shift, but could do some evenings. Don't mind weekends at all. Any info helpful. TIA ...

I have been working third shift for about three months and am still having some trouble getting used to it. My question is do you work your shift then go to sleep or do you stay up until later in the afternoon and then sleep until your shift starts. many of us will be reassigned to 2nd or 3rd shift. If you are assigned and do not comply, you will be considered as having resigned. I'm considering taking a 3rd shift job, which I've never done before. Any suggestions on making the transition to working 3rd shift from days, staying awake without depending on too much caffiene, getting enough sleep during the day, etc. I also have a puppy that will be at home with me during the day and am wondering if he needs to stay up with me at night so he will sleep during the day also. Have been fortunate and always worked first shift (weekends included). Now it looks like those are hard to come by and may have to take a 2nd shift or third shift. Once you do, is it easy to get on days in a year or two with most companies or are you locked in for life? ...

So sorry for the rant, but I am so tired of companies wanting us all to cover third shift, but don't want to pay anything extra when we do and if they do it's something like a quarter of a penny, what in the world is that? I know I shouldn't complain, but this shift is HARD to work, especially when you have little ones.
