Working 2nd or 3rd shift ? - anon

Posted: Apr 29, 2011

Have been fortunate and always worked first shift (weekends included).  Now it looks like those are hard to come by and may have to take a 2nd shift or third shift.  Once you do, is it easy to get on days in a year or two with most companies or are you locked in for life?

3rd shift - NightOwl

[ In Reply To ..]
I work third and I feel like I'm locked in. The transition to nights is harder than you can imagine. I was so sleep deprived for the first 2 months that I became very depressed and sat around and cried. It was just sheer exhaustion. Good luck!

Yep, locked in 3rd shift for life. I feel like I'm "doing time." - Kicker

It's even next to impossible to request a night off WAY IN ADVANCE because amazingly no one wants to cover and there is no calling out sick, even if there is an injury--must be dead. Very unfair shift most times.

BUT the work is there. More than enough and my paychecks have never been better. Social life has gone down the crapper, but that would happen if I were jobless too. Can't have it all I guess ;-)

I love second shift... - cindyoh

I can't imagine working any other shift, especially working from home. I accomplish so much more this way when ont working. I'd feel so cooped up working during the day and sure could not stay awake on third shift (I've done both and hated it). Seems like the work is more plentiful this way also. I suppose if you're married with kids this might not work so well.

Third shift - destinyisntfree

I work third shift all but one day a week, where I work a 2nd shift, more or less. I took third shift because I had a newborn at the time, and it was easier, but now that the baby is older and sleeping through the night, I feel like I never see her because I am sleeping during the day. Unfortunately, I can't really change my schedule for a year.

Yes, you are right--and you added one thing I forgot--I do not have children at home. Second shift might be hard if you had little ones around. For me, it is perfect.

I work second shift and I hate it... - sm

First shift never had any work so I went to second shift. I always have work but now I have no life. My family and friends do things after work while I am working and missing out on things (like my nephew's b'day party last night). Like another poster said, it's impossible to take time off when you work the later shifts. I always get e-mails that say no flexing, no missing work unless it's an emergency. While the e-mails during the day shift tell them to pretty much flex and work here and there as they please.

I work second shift and I get depressed - Another MT

I have been working second shift now for a long time, and it is okay for the work, although recently I am finding that my jobs are disappearing, and I was told that if the work is slim some of my jobs might be taken away from me for other MTs; and there are not that many of us on second shift, and 1 girl was recently hired for third shift. Anyhow, it is okay, very quiet, but I find I go through blue periods and cry sometimes because I am missing out on a life, but fortunately my children are all grown and gone.

Yep, the definite drawback is the missing out... - cindyoh

on the family/friends evening stuff. I can't watch the nephews play ball. No great social life, but after so many years I've adjusted. My nights off are Sunday and Monday, and yeah, not much goes on those nights. My "social life" consists of church, thrift stores, lunch out, an early movie, whatever I can make happen before 3 p.m. I never was much for running the streets after dark anyway, ha-ha, so I don't feel that deprived. I get together with my sister, mom, niece and her bunch to fix a big dinner most Sundays after church these days.

My work load has changed over the past few months, and I'm frankly a bit uneasy. No mandatory OT on my account for quite awhile now, and now we can flex or ask for PTO and actually get it. Hope this isn't the beginning of what I went through before I had to leave Spheris.

2nd split - AnotherMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I am currently working a split shift and find I really like it. I do two 4-hour shifts of 12-4 pm and then 9-1 am. I really like that so far because the work is more available and yet you still get to stop and cook dinner, etc. for the family.

Second Shift - Old Pro

I work second shift and love it. I am by nature more of an owl than a lark and this works perfectly for me. I can pace myself in the morning doing house chores, etc. and do not have to rush off for work. When I was younger, I sometimes worked third shift, but that is too late, even for an owl like me. This way, I can work, and still have a couple of hours after work for reading, etc. I have always thought that first shift was the least desirable, but I guess we are all different (and that's a GOOD thing)!

It is a Life Sentence - TXMT

I have found that once you go to 3rd shift it is almost impossible to get off it in some companies. I went to 3rd for what was supposed to be a brief period of time, per an agreement with scheduling, and could not get off it. I vented to co-workers off the clock about and they reported that they had the same experience. I loved the company and absolutely hated to leave it but that shift was killing me. I have 5 small children and just couldn't work all night and be up all day with toddlers and help the others with their school work. This will vary by company of course but I have heard time and time again other MTs say the same thing. Second shift is fine but third shift is torture, for me at least.

WMX - Working Outside Of Normal Shift
Jun 26, 2011

I am thinking for right now I don't really care if I "fudge" on my shift a little here and there.  First they offer OT, then no work.  I almost think it might be better when we are under different management.  HOWEVER, I still have not seen anything on the acquisition other than what we were originally told.  How odd!! Makes you afraid to go with any of the smaller companies.  Who knows who will be eaten up next.  I will say I was an old YOG employee and when ...

Working 2nd Shift With Kids
Apr 29, 2013

I'm considering a FT second shift position with a company, but I would like to get some input from others who work 2nd shift on how they are able to do it with a husband and small children at home.  I am currently working first shift while husband is at work and kids in school but have a lot of days with low or no work.  Just wondering how you are able to stay focused and take care of regular chores/duties around the house in the evenings and still work and maintain a decent line ...

I Wish Shaw Could Be Working My Shift Today.
Aug 29, 2013

I have worked so hard all day, have next to nil inactive time, and still, barely the minimum line count. I would especially like him to do the last report with the horrible scratchy sound with the doctor alternatively blasting out my ears and not talking into the phone, and the horrible output. Ha, ha - spend a day in our shoes. What a challenge :) I doubt he is up for the challenge, though. ...

Third Shift
Dec 10, 2009

I was wondering if it's really worth it to work the 3rd shift?  Does the additional CPL really make that much of a difference.  Does the workload stay steadier during that time?  I've been offered a 3rd shift part-time job, but just don't know if it's worth revamping my entire day to work this late.  Would anybody working this shift let me know how it works out as far as sleep, daytime errands, etc.? ...

What Is First Shift, Second Shift, Etc.?
Dec 16, 2010

I see job ads for First Shift, Second Shift, etc., and modified shifts, and I am not sure exactly what periods of time these are.   I figure they are specific hours of the day - like day, swing, graveyard shifts - but what are the hours, generally? I have only worked as an IC with TAT.  I am considering applying for some of the employee status jobs but need to clarify what these shifts are. Thank you. ...

Totally unhappy with current company, but do love my shift.  Most jobs advertised are for 2nd and 3rd shift.  Anyone know of companies that would hire for very early morning or possible split shifts?  Too old at this time to think about trying night shift, but could do some evenings.  Don't mind weekends at all. Second-Shift MTs
Jan 07, 2015

I was just curious if there is any correalation between working 2nd shift and being unable to get to sleep at night? I have been having trouble sleeping lately and wondering if it could be due to the fact that I have been staying on later typing? Wondering if its making it harder for me to sleep because its taking so long for my brain to unwind? Anyone else have this problem? Advice appreciated. Thanks! ...

many of us will be reassigned to 2nd or 3rd shift. If you are assigned and do not comply, you will be considered as having resigned. Hmm... sounds like a way to lay off/fire people in a way they won't be eligible for unemployment. Can't get unemployment for quitting (resigned)!
