Which do you think is the best shift - 11pm to 7pm or 3p to11p

I would give my eye tooth for that schedule - sm

I'm not a morning person. I had that shift a couple years ago. I'd sleep until 10 (my kids are gone), be done by 7:30, still have the evening to shop, watch TV, etc. My internal clock says sleep between 3 a.m. and 10. I work the red-eye now, and my hardest time is right around 3 a.m. still.

Anyhow, depends on your lifestyle too. I also worked the 3 to 11. I'd find myself sleeping until 2 p.m. with all my free time after my shift at midnight. It was just all dead time. I had a kid in high school at the time and it was really hard finding time to spend with her with all the action happening in the evening.

Good luck with your decision!!

3:11 for me. - Not a day person

I prefer p.m.'s. I work best during those hours. I can do stuff in the morning without adjusting schedule.

Best shift - 3-11

I would take the evening shift. I have worked that 11-7/noon-8 and it is horrible. Unless you get to bed by 9 and up at 6 a.m., you have to time to do anything. At least with 3-11, you have the who day and you can get up early and grab a quick nap if you need to and 11 isn't that late and you will probably be in bed my midnight. I wouldn't work any later than that though.

Plus, if you ever had to, you could squeeze part or nearly all of a day shift job before the 2nd shift job kicked in. I did that for a year once--nearly killed me but it also got me out of some major financial butthurt ;)

I used to think 3-11 but--sm - anon

it all comes down to the company. There used to be an abundance of work during that window but if a company offshores, there is a good chance they are taking work at that time. I am supposed to work until midnight E time but the work often gets cleared it before then. I am on an account that does not offshore so that means there is less work to fight for at these later hours. Also, less dictation coming in. The actual # of reports pending in the afternoon is generally low but enough comes in to generally keep me busy in the afternoon. Rather stinks in the evenings because I like the shift differential and I like working nights but it is no longer working out for me.

Depends on what your home life is like - .

If you have a husband/significant other who works a Monday through Friday daytime shift and if you work until late at night (and assuming one weekend day), that would leave you with one day to spend together or go anywhere (dinner, movie, etc.) I know my husband and I don't exactly have an exciting life (he works a Monday through Friday day shift), but we enjoy sitting down to an unhurried dinner each night, maybe watch a favorite TV show in the evening, and talk about our day. I would hate the thought of losing all of that because of being tied to the computer.

Also, if you have children (I don't), I'm not sure how difficult that would be depending on ages. Family time, help with homework, baths, etc.

I could see maybe doing it if I was single, but maybe not. My natural body clock wakes me up early and gets me all droopy eyed by evening, so I really don't know if I could make that transition and still be alert enough to not make mistakes.

I used to work as a manager, up at 6:30 checking the computer until after midnight each night (including weekends). I took it easy in the evenings when my kids and husband were around but was still checking the computer and not only was I irritated by this but so were they. I have moved into a permanent hourly 2nd shift position (1-9 pm) and although that still cuts into our evenings, I have taken my kids out of daycare and spend the entire mornings with them, then they nap and my husband is very supportive of waiting for me to finish my 'shift with work' until 9 when we spend our last hour or two together before bed. It works for us, especially as the computer is in the family room so I'm 'with' them all afternoon/evening anyway. I am happier doing that than worrying ALL DAY LONG about work - there has to be a cut off time, no matter when, but it's important for you and important to your family to know you don't 'always' work.

It depends.... - My2cents

I work 3-11 p.m. because we have a medically fragile child with a lot of doctor's appointments, so I schedule those all during the morning hours. Hubby works 7a-3p from home too so we're able to team tag taking care of our child. It's what works best for us.

Third Shift
Dec 10, 2009

I was wondering if it's really worth it to work the 3rd shift?  Does the additional CPL really make that much of a difference.  Does the workload stay steadier during that time?  I've been offered a 3rd shift part-time job, but just don't know if it's worth revamping my entire day to work this late.  Would anybody working this shift let me know how it works out as far as sleep, daytime errands, etc.? ...

What Is First Shift, Second Shift, Etc.?
Dec 16, 2010

I see job ads for First Shift, Second Shift, etc., and modified shifts, and I am not sure exactly what periods of time these are.   I figure they are specific hours of the day - like day, swing, graveyard shifts - but what are the hours, generally? I have only worked as an IC with TAT.  I am considering applying for some of the employee status jobs but need to clarify what these shifts are. Thank you. ...

Totally unhappy with current company, but do love my shift.  Most jobs advertised are for 2nd and 3rd shift.  Anyone know of companies that would hire for very early morning or possible split shifts?  Too old at this time to think about trying night shift, but could do some evenings.  Don't mind weekends at all. Jan 07, 2015

I was just curious if there is any correalation between working 2nd shift and being unable to get to sleep at night? I have been having trouble sleeping lately and wondering if it could be due to the fact that I have been staying on later typing? Wondering if its making it harder for me to sleep because its taking so long for my brain to unwind? Anyone else have this problem? Advice appreciated. Thanks! ...

About 1/3 of those 100% QA reports were done by ILPs.  Total average earnings per hour:  a little over 4 $, but  I will be paid at my state's minimum wage.  Before my in-house hospital job was outsourced to an MTSO that kept the work in the country for 2 years and then sent it to India, I was being paid 19 $ an hour and also had great benefits and PTO.   When did this "profession" turn into a minimum wage job ?  (actually, half of minimum wage if ...

many of us will be reassigned to 2nd or 3rd shift. If you are assigned and do not comply, you will be considered as having resigned. Hmm... sounds like a way to lay off/fire people in a way they won't be eligible for unemployment. Can't get unemployment for quitting (resigned)! Working 2nd Or 3rd Shift ?

Have been fortunate and always worked first shift (weekends included).  Now it looks like those are hard to come by and may have to take a 2nd shift or third shift.  Once you do, is it easy to get on days in a year or two with most companies or are you locked in for life? ...

They Want Third Shift Workers, But....
Dec 12, 2011

So sorry for the rant, but I am so tired of companies wanting us all to cover third shift, but don't want to pay anything extra when we do and if they do it's something like a quarter of a penny, what in the world is that?   I know I shouldn't complain, but this shift is HARD to work, especially when you have little ones.  Just a little frustrated tonight, and I know there are people who have it worse than I do, but I don't have anywhere else to vent.  Thanks ...

They Care More About Your Shift
Jan 05, 2012

I think MQ, Spheris, Transcend care more about that you are working your shift than any errors.  I was so so tired (cause I"m moving) yesterday, I couldnt keep my eyes open and had to take an hour break to sleep.  When I came back to work, they dug up all kinds of stupid errors I did just to show me who the boss is.  They all do it.  It keeps you in line. ...
