A GOOD company to work for? - anon

Posted: Sep 12, 2012

I've been an IC for 8 years, and I want to make the switch to employee status (need medical insurance).  It seems that I have come across A LOT of negitivity about every company that I have considered applying for.  My question is, who is really happy with the company they work for?

does not matter how we feel, how will you feel - working for 4 and 8 cpl

[ In Reply To ..]
Does not matter how much experience you have, does not matter how good you are, that is what you will start at.

Will you be happy?

Is that what I asked? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Okay, um, that was NOT an invitation to start griping about pay. The post clearly asks to state if you are happy with your present employer, NOT griping about pay. Maybe the fact that many people have problems following simple instructions is a reason why they are paid so low... I am quite aware of the "going" pay rate, and I didn't ask that. I asked if people were happy with their employer. This is a big, scary change for me after 8 years, and I would MUCH rather be happy than paid an extra cent and be miserable. So, once again, anybody happy with their employer?

Wow! - sm

I'm sure with your sunny disposition and your happy go lucky attitude you'll be quite an asset for someone desperate for employees. Maybe you should find a different field if you don't want the truth about what being an MT is really like?
I've been an MT for over 10 years... - anon

So you say that I should find a different field because I don't want to be told the truth about what being an MT is really like? Yeah, I know what being an MT is like, which is why I specifically did not ask for that information. I asked, once again, "who is happy with their company?" Big difference. I came on here looking for GOOD information about companies (not a place to complain about YOUR job - if I wanted to hear complaints, I would read just about every other thread on this board). This is a JOB, people. If you are not happy and constantly complain about it, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT... Don't assume that someone is ignorant about the field because they want to know about any GOOD experiences people have had with their employers. Furthermore, the only reason I am contemplating leaving my IC position is because of a medical condition. I've been with this company for 8 years, and my sunny disposition and wonderful attitude has been a wonderful asset when it comes to dealing with the difficulties that we as MTs have to deal with. I am not job hopping, trying to find the perfect scenario. I am researching companies BEFORE I take the time to show interest, apply, test, train, and become an employee. Thanks for your advice about the career change, though. May I suggest you take it?
I DID NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT ANY JOB - working for 4 and 8 cpl
[ In Reply To ..]
MAYBE IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO FLIPPIN READ THE POST, I SAID HOW HAPPY WILL YOU BE MAKING 4 AND 8!

IF YOU WANT TO FIND A GOOD COMPANY, TAKE A BUNCH OF FLIPPIN TESTS AND FIND A JOB THAT WILL HIRE YOUR MEAN OL SELF AND THEN LET US KNOW HOW HAPPY YOU ARE!

here's a suggestion - how about we find a way to

I am not sure who you really are, but you sound like a recruiter fishing for info. If you already know about the MT field, then why did you ask the question to begin with? Read the boards, you can figure out who is bad and who might be decent.

Yes, Im happy. I work for M*Modal. - and it suits me just fine.

You'll hear someone say something good about a company and then someone else comes back and says "stay away." It's a crap shoot.

That's what I thought... - anon

Being a single mom, its pretty difficult to play a game of craps when it comes to your income, but its even harder to be an IC and have absolutely no benefits. I've missed almost a week of work from a nasty infection, have been to the ER three times because no one else will accept me as a patient because I have no insurance, and have spent a small fortune on prescriptions (not to mention the lack of sick pay to cover this week that I have been out). Seriously wondering where the house payment is going to come from now... I can deal with working for 8 cpl again (since I'm only making 9.5 now) as long as there are benefits to cover the gaps (like sick pay, insurance, vacation - none of which I have had in 8 years...) I'm starting to think that being an underpaid employee with benefits is far better than being an IC (since I have no significant other to help me out with insurance). I just wish I knew of a few companies to apply with that I will not be kicking myself in the future for wasting my time...

I think each company is different and each employee's experience is different. The only way you will find a good company will be to apply and see how things are for you, not the masses. If you go by what people post here, you will be scared to apply for anything. You may love a company that another MT hates. I will say this though: You might as well stick to the bigger companies because eventually the smaller ones get gobbled up by them anyway.

Thank you! - anon

I'm actually in the midst of being recruited by a "monster" company, and what I have read about them scares me to death. However, I personally know a woman who has worked for them for 5+ years who says she has never been happier with a company. I think people (myself included) may be really quick to voice everything that is bad, but the good things rarely get the publicity (at least that is what I'm hoping for, and what I was hoping to find out by posting here). Guess I'm going to give it a whirl!!! :D

Forgot to add that benefits are good and affordable - at M*Modal, if your lucky to

[ In Reply To ..]
test in at a tier 3 you can make more than 4 and 8cpl, but 4 and 8 is the starting pay, but there is the option to ask for an increase which I did and got. Some complain and many here have nothing nice to say about them, but my team always has an abundance of work and more overtime than we can handle. Maybe I got the luck of the draw..I dont know, but I like it and would'nt think of going any place else.
THANK YOU!!! - anon

I'm going to check them out. I currently am at 9.5 cpl with no VR (but I do proof the newer MTs work at an hourly rate). Being an IC, I get no benefits, and I would happily take a cut in pay for the chance to have insurance. Just yesterday, I was turned away by the ENT specialist that the ER doc referred me to because I have no insurance. My health is NOT worth an extra cent per line.
I second that - despite what a lot seem to

Mmodal is doing ok for me too.

Is insurance your only reason? - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
If needing insurance is the only reason you want employee status, then why not just purchase your own and stay where you are? Most companies that provide insurance will still require you to pay a big chunk of the premium. In fact, last year I got an employee-status job and the insurance they offered would have cost a lot more than what I already had on my own. Glad I kept my own, because that job didn't work out and I'm back to being IC.

Insurance and PTO are my reasons - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I got a quote for insurance that would cost more than $500 per month. That is the main factor, plus the fact that I have had to take almost a week off work (with no PTO after 8 years of service). In my younger days, I was fine doing the IC thing, but as I get older and health problems are inevitable, it is time for me to have some kind of insurance plus making sure my bills are covered in the event that I am unable to work. I'm a single mom of three and receive absolutely no child support or other "benefits" other than the 9.5 cpl I make by transcribing. This illness has really taken a toll on the finances, and it wouldn't have been an issue if I would have went down the employee road instead of being an IC. Don't get me wrong, I love the company I work for, and I will miss them all very much! It is a local company, and I personally know the other MTs, and have even made friendships with many of them. I hate to leave, but it is something that I need to do to make sure our family doesn't go through this again.

....have you tried going to one of the clinics nearest you for free or reduced-cost healthcare for your office visits? I know it's not ideal, especially for those who are used to going to their own doctor in their own doctor's office; but honestly, in these times of so many people without jobs, under-employed, etc., there's been a huge increase in the utilization of these clinics in my city.

There is one clinic here for the "working poor" -- people who aren't necessarily on welfare or homeless. They have jobs, but either their jobs don't provide insurance or they can't afford it, even with an income. Another clinic takes those with or without insurance, and they actually offer very nice care. No frills, perhaps; but desperate times call for desperate measures!

It just seems such a shame to have to go to an ER for some of your things that could be handled in a doctor's office/clinic. Gosh, the time alone! Around these parts--a 3-hour wait in the ER is the absolute norm here. And then there's whatever portion you DO end up having to pay--even if the hospital writes off some of the cost, isn't that horribly expensive for you through the ER??

I wish you well. It sounds like you're in a tight spot, and I hope you find just the right place for you. If you have 3 children still at home, I'm guessing you MIGHT be young enough yourself to try to get some re-training (and might even be able to get it for very little or no cost because of your finances) and get into something with better job security for the future. I'm not usually a pessimist, but I don't see great years ahead in MT, whether as an IC or as an employee. Just a thought! Good luck.

Something you may not have thought of.... - anontoo

you say you would happily take a pay cut in order to have insurance. Well, I was at one time earning 9 cpl too. Consequently that was reduced to 8 cpl due to company games. You wouldn't think that a 1 cpl difference means that much, but it does. Looking at it in the long term, the 1 cpl reduction effectively cut my annual income in half!! Can you afford THAT?? Plus still having to pay for at least some of the insurance coverage that may be provided by an employer?? Plus having extra taken out of your check each pay day for your taxes and such? That is a huge reduction in pay. Take my word for it! It would probably add up to having to pay for your own insurance anyway. Think about it from all aspects, not just from the insurance need. Good luck to you!
Cut your pay in half? Were you making 2 cpl? - Does not add up

not making 2 cpl!! - anontoo
[ In Reply To ..]
I specifically stated I had been making 9 cpl (not 2) and had been reduced in pay due to company games to 8 cpl. That, along with a reduction in work, my annual income was cut in half. Figure it out annually and see how much 1 cpl makes a difference in your income. geesh.

Serious idea... - Des

Most hospitals offer healthcare and PTO to ALL employees, even part-time. If you're happy with your current IC position, find a part-time job doing really anything at a hospital and get your insurance and PTO there. The PTO won't be as much as full-time, but it'll be something. Not to mention, having a part-time job at a hospital would be a good back-up income if something happens to your IC position.

advice - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
When you ask about "good" companies, I believe it depends on what accounts you are put on and what will eventually happen to those accounts, which is impossible to predict.

That being said, you may want to think about how potentially unstable "full-time benefits" are right now. Speaking just from my experience and what I've read on the boards, it's really tough to find enough work to keep those full-time benefits. If you worked as an IC before and are used to set hours and steady work flow, you may not expect to find that as an MT employee. You may (like myself) find you have to work past your set shift hours, days off, any time you can find extra. If you have health problems, a family, etc., you may want to think about whether you can do that or not. I have good health benefits from my company, but to be honest, I'm preparing myself to lose them because I can't always count on enough work being available.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, but I wouldn't want you to get in a worse situation. It may also explain why you can't get much of a straight answer to your question.

Thank you for your honesty - anon

I have decided to take the advice of another post here and see if I can get assistance for the "working poor" and keep my position (since I do love my company so much). There has to be a way, and I was really scared to change jobs after 8 years, especially now that things ARE so different since I was hired for my last job.
