Just for fun. A few silly codes. - Maybe old news for coders...sm

...but this was in my newspaper today and it cracked me up.
Commentators have had fun with the new system of medical diagnostic codes (denominated in from four to ten digits each) scheduled to take effect in October 2015, and the âHealthcare Diveâ blog had its laughs in a July post.
The codes for "problems in relationship with in-laws" and "bizarre personal appearance" are quixotic enough, but the most âabsurd" codes are "subsequent encounters" (that is, at least the second time the same thing happened to a patient) for events like walking into a lamppost, or getting sucked into a jet engine, or receiving burns from on-fire water skis, or having contact with a cow beyond being bitten or kicked (since those contacts have separate codes). Also notable was S10.87XA, "Other superficial bite of other specified part of neck, initial encounter," which seems to describe a "hickey." [HealthcareDive.com, 7-15-2014]
very funny, but.... sm - MTMT

Could anyone ever have a second encounter of being sucked into a jet engine? haha
Sorry, not quite so funny ... - that article is incorrect.
[ In Reply To ..]
"Subsequent encounter" means an encounter following the initial encounter for the SAME incident.
It is intended to make it more clear that treatment is being provided for the SAME broken leg or other mishap rather than for another one.
In other words, it is not saying that the patient was sucked into a jet engine twice. Rather, it says they got sucked in once, got treated initially, and then got treated some more.
You're joking, right? sm - Anon

It's a miracle that someone lived after a jet engine suck-in. There should be a code for "miracle they lived." LOL.
Umm, no, I was not joking. - Z73.1

On the other hand, I think bizarre personal appearance is a little iffy. Are there even objective criteria for that?
I also wonder about the agility of someone struck by a turtle.
Struck by turtle, it can happen. - CT

Once upon a time, I worked as a veterinary nurse. We dealt with exotics, including turtles. Picture this, nurse is examining turtle, turtle bites nurse, nurse flips out flipping turtle off finger, assistant is clobbered by flying turtle. The end. (I saw this very thing happen with a ferret once, and a chameleon...)
The code sets are an index of the tragedies and - misfortunes that befall us.

In the ICD-9 set, there is a code for an injury sustained when a person strikes a train.
There is another for no room at the inn.

ICD-10 Codes Replacing ICD-9 Codes Jul 14, 2012Good morning all,
I am a long-time MT considering medical coding as a new career as I love the medical language profession and do not want to leave, however, keeping a long-time MT job that makes money I can live on is becoming almost nonexist.
By sheer luck, I met a manager of a small clinic that offered me a medical coding entry level job $16/hour with medical insurance paid for in full for a family. Only thing I have to do is pass the exam and become certified. She had to become ce ...
This Silly Audits Apr 15, 2010This is silly
Not only do we need to follow CP guidelines but BOS and then DocQscribe standards.
So even if you have the first 2, the third will get you audit.
Why can't they spend the money and create one set of rules to follow and be done with it.
We work on production now. checking on previous dictated reports and then double checking guidelines from all three areas ??
and when you send in a blank now I am also being questioned about the audio etc.&nb ...

More Silly Union Talk Jan 31, 2011
Before responding, please read this post carefully. Yes, I’m talking union here, but NOT an MT union which would be pointless. Unfortunately we’ve missed that opportunity. Also, this post is intended for experienced professional MTs and include my thoughts on several topics that started down below. And hold onto your hats; this is a long one.
I’ve chimed in on this subject before, but I wanted to make an official post to put it out there and get valuable feedback fro ...
Fluency Silly Question - Or Not ? Jun 05, 2014Recently got new computer and started using Windows 7 Professional. When I type p.o. I get two spaces after each period. Not sure if a fluency or a Win 7 problem. I have scoured all settings, to no avail. Also, what I had fixed before, when I type p.o. I get p.O. Any ideas how to get rid of the capital O. I have taken out all autoinserts in settings to avoid caps at beginning of new sentences, etc. This is getting annoying, I waste a lot of time going back to delete ...
Silly Me. I Was Hoping For Better Insurance. Nov 04, 2014Way to go Nuance!
I had actually hoped we'd at least get copays this time, even if it meant paying more.
Disgusting. Plain and simple. Having insurance that you can barely afford and can't even use because of the obscenely high deductible and no co-pays is ridiculous.
This year is even more special - we are signing up for something we don't even know that we can afford because of the compensation changes they have promised.
I am going to check into opting out a ...

The New Codes Feb 07, 2013hmmm, just curious after reading this: "The codes, produced by the American Medical Association, are updated each year, usually with no problem, experts say. But this year, changes to a mere 30 codes that affect mental health services have thrown a huge glitch into the system."
