Current coders - please share your opinion - stillsearching

Posted: Apr 12, 2010

I have been a MT for years, but am ready to change careers. Do you think coding is going to be in the same position as MT some years down the road or do you feel coding is stable career choice, and coders will always be needed?

Well, I am taking it that this question cannot be answered - stillsearching

Coding - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I was hoping someone would answer this. I have 2 friends that do coding. One at home and one at a company. They both like and make more than I do as an MT. They have only been doing it about half as long as I have.

I was hoping someone would answer, too!! nm - stillsearching

Sorry, I was hoping some others would chime in.

I think coding is likely to be around a long time, although the "process" of coding and what coders do might change somewhat. This doesn't mean there won't be jobs for coders, though.

Think about accountants. Years ago, accountants tallied everything up in fountain pen on a ledger. After that, they used huge mechanical calculators, then they used electronic calculators, and now they have accounting programs in computers. The need for accountants to hand-tally disappeared, but that didn't eliminate their jobs. Their jobs just morphed into something bigger and better. Now accountants are financial advisers and corporate big-wigs, among other things.

Coding is much the same. Coders used to look up codes in a book and enter codes in pencil or pen on a sheet of paper so someone could type them onto a bill and someone else could stick that sheet into the patient record. Then, coders got software that served as the code book and as a place to enter the codes. Some software just printed out a sheet, which got typed into the bill and put into the record. Now, some software integrates with hospital billing systems and might pass the codes to a biller and put them right into the bill.

The value of a coder doesn't lie only in the fact that they can look up codes, or in typing them on a bill. It lies in the knowledge the coder brings to the table -- a knowledge of coding rules, reimbursement rules, and of medicine. Coders are able to evaluate medical documentation for adequacy and to advise physicians on how to improve it. They're able to do MORE than just look up codes.

There are also a lot of different types of jobs and different levels of expertise in coding. These jobs range from entry-level coding to more technical advanced coding, to supervision, quality assurance, compliance, auditing, and consulting. There are jobs for coders who come in and audit a physician or facility's coding to help them spot errors before an insurer or Medicare does. And there are jobs for coders who help offices and facilities that have BEEN audited to defend themselves, take necessary action, and mitigate the damage.

There are even jobs which involve selecting codes and maintaining the facility computer systems that handle routine charges (chargemasters), or developing and maintaining the coding on the charge tickets that physician offices use.

There are loads of training jobs, too. Every year there are code updates and loads of changes to rules and Medicare requirements. Coders have to adapt to those, but they also find jobs in helping other coders, physicians, and facilities adapt.

I do not think there will ever be much offshoring of coding. There was a little movement in that direction years ago, but it fizzled quickly. There is too much at stake financially and with regard to liability.

Thanks so much, redpen! nm - stillsearching

Question For Current Coders
May 13, 2014

Have coding processes changed recently at your facilities?  I work for a very large hospital, a level I trauma center and teaching facility.  I work on the outpatient side.  We have strict productivity guidelines not only in terms of charts per hour but also percentage of productive time.  Our volumes are huge and are supposed to be coding within 1.5 to 2 days post discharge.  It seems like they have found more and more ways to cut corners in order to push more charts ou ...

TO: Current MM Coders NOT TRAINEES
Aug 23, 2014

I don't know why people want to rip me a new one over this, but I would simply like to know if Mmodal treats it current coder employees (NOT ITS TRAINEES) any better than its treats ts MTs. How may pay cuts have you had in the last 5 years? How many benefits have you had cut? What kiind of audit percentage do you have to meet? Do you have a form of performance manages that cuts your salary in half? Are you happy working as a coder for Mmodal? Would you recommend Mmodal to any other c ...

Considering Coding School. Can Some Current Coders Please Tell Me - Sm
Jan 06, 2015

why coding would not eventually be replaced by electronic systems in the future?  Do they not have software that can pick out words from the text and assign the codes?  What does a coder do that cannot be automated by a machine?  Please don't think I am being insulting.  I know very little about coding and have just started researching it.  I am an MT for 20+ years. ...

If You're Willing To Share...

I'm interested in figuring out the average VR lines per day an MT can average with M*M as well as how many straight typing lines you get per day.  I know this is dependent on a lot of different factors like account and the skill of the MT but, if you are willing to share, I would love for people to post how many lines per day you average on VR and straight typing. Recently someone here mentioned that the top producers in their region were producing 1200 VR lines per day.  I would ...

I am grateful to have a job today.  I am grateful that work is available on that job.  I am grateful that it pays well.  I am just grateful.  It may not always be like that, but the majority of the time I have work, and can make money to pay my bills.  Not alot of people can say that.  Not to mention when I am sick like I am now, I can work in the comfort of my own home.  That in itself is a blessing!  I wish this for all of us.  Anybody else with gra ...

Here is an example of why we need to keep a sense of humor about what we do.  I am sure it shows other things but after the last day of transcribing this long psych eval -  the only thing I need more than humor is bourbon. Anyone Have A Tip They Can Share For Deleting
Nov 02, 2014

When doing VR, which of course is 98% of the time, I keep my hands at the bottom of the keyboard, left hand near Cntl, right hand hovering over the arrow keys.  Since there is a lot of deleting to do, you have to reach up to the top right corner of the laptop to press delete.  Of course I always have to look to make sure I don't accidentally hit insert.  It's so annoying.  Is there an easier way that I'm not thinking of?  Any suggestions would be SOOOO app ...

New Job Training Nightmares - Share Yours
Aug 12, 2010

This is the 2nd position I have found myself in in under 3 years.  Again, I am facing being trained by a person who is giving me information so quickly, it is impossible to write it down, left alone remember it.  logmein123 - I watch this MT go through the steps and she is moving through the steps at a furious speed, mumbling about going into the wrong window, back out, into something else, "write this down."  Sets me up and leaves out vital step which I don't realize for a ...

Wanted To Share My Triumph!
Aug 22, 2011

I see so much negative posted on this board, that I wanted to share my success, if for no other reason than to show others that it is possible to do well.   I had struggled for a while lately with production because of some personal circumstances, and having a hard time just getting myself in gear and being able to do what needed to be done. I finally decided that I am the only one who can change my financial situation, and took the bull by the horns.  I downloaded a stopwatch/timer ...

Share A Positive About MT Career

Hi fellow MTs.  As we all know, this board can sometimes be full of negative things, and many MTs who once had a good career in this field are experiencing changes that have negatively affected them and their pay and their lives.  My heart does go out to these people; however, I thought it would be fun to talk about some positives we have experienced in this field, even if we would no longer recommend the field to a new person.  Personally, I have been an MT for 5-1/2 years, and ...
