New job training nightmares - Share yours - Trainers give feed back

Posted: Aug 12, 2010

This is the 2nd position I have found myself in in under 3 years.  Again, I am facing being trained by a person who is giving me information so quickly, it is impossible to write it down, left alone remember it.  logmein123 - I watch this MT go through the steps and she is moving through the steps at a furious speed, mumbling about going into the wrong window, back out, into something else, "write this down."

Sets me up and leaves out vital step which I don't realize for a week.  I spend most of my time looking for patients, doctors and macros.  My last job's training was no better.  She was the lead - left her desk for appointments while training me, actually let me struggle with the absolute worst dictator during my first 2 weeks (low-talking mumbler), would let 3 jobs fall into my queue and then let me sit there all day without giving me feed back but I could not do anymore until she did.  I made 186.00 for my first 2 weeks there - Yes, I was FT employee but "unpaid training."

A year later, I realized she was sadistic to do this.  I have done this for years and just need to be trained in a comprehensive fashion.  I am not an idiotic but the trainers appear to be deciding just how much or how little training they are going to give depending on how fond they are of you.

Listen, I passed the test and was hired.  I do not need the trainer deciding whether I make it in this job.  And, as they always know, I am a one-income house.  A meager paycheck a few payperiods in a row ruined me financially.  I have never recovered.  By the way, I ended up being the top performer in the latter position I described.  The facility appreciated my hard work and told me so.

MTSO - Please reign in your trainers - there are enough that appear to be on a power trip - that I have run into 2 already in under 5 years.  We are not here to win a personality contest, we are here to provide a sound legal document and be paid accordingly.  Omitting information from a training session or giving the wrong information, or making us struggle with unusually difficult dictation while we are learning the format - within the first 2 weeks - is unusually cruel.  And set up a training time when the trainer is available the entire shift.  Time is money in this business.

Train the trainers to be objective.

If they think every MT who crosses their path is going to become fast friends with them, they are delusional.  We are who we are and this is a job, not a social event.

I agree that the training is very rushed. When I did my training reports, I collected a list of questions that were "production-stoppers"-- i.e. you couldn't work, or you would make a big mistake, if you didn't know these things. The next day was the last day of training. I waited for the "any questions?" part of the end of the phone call. To my dismay, I realized the trainer had timed our session to end exactly when she needed to start another appointment-- no time for questions! I interrupted her rapid-fire good-bye & good luck spiel to ask a few of the most important questions. Fortunately, I was able to email and get answers to the other questions later. I do remember thinking to myself, as I was flipping through page after page of instructions, "They must have a high turnover rate-- it is really tough just to get through the training." (Does anybody remember the days when you could just call someone, or ask someone in the office, "What do you do about phone calls?" or "Where do you change the work type?" without having to make it a huge solitary research project?) Also in the training conference call was someone who had apparently never done VR before-- every time the trainer would explain a keyboard command, the "newbie" would say Wow! That's amazing! Great! And I was just looking at the number of mistakes in the report and thinking how long it would take to edit it, so I couldn't match the other person for enthusiasm. ("Wow! If you hit this keyboard command 26 times, it will delete all the mistakes in this paragraph! How cool is that!") It didn't help that the trainer was claiming amazingly high average editing rates per hour with the super-duper platform, which HAD made me feel very happy, and the moment I saw that sample report, I realized it was an exaggeration (the polite term). You can just glance at a rough draft and know that, um, 400-500 lines an hour is not going to be possible. Maybe 250 if you really push it. And whumph-- there is all the air going out of your happy balloon, and you realize they've fed you some serious misinformation before you've even started. But is that something you just come out and tell the trainer during your TRAINING? Probably not!

Great post! - nicat

A very accurate description! MTSOs DO need to get their trainers, QA, team leads and other ancillary support people under strict control. These people should be a source of support to the MT, who bring in the revenue. But they often fancy themselves as somehow more knowledgeable and ''superior'' and are on a power-trip. They do their company's reputation great harm as word gets around and expert MTs avoid them like the plague.

No lie I was trained 30 minutes by a well known company to these boards - my first time to do VR

[ In Reply To ..]
Was told to do like everyone else does and use the mouse and learn one key command at a time. It was really unbelievable. Had I not been in this business for 30 years, I could not have done it. I am basically training myself.

you hit the nail on the head. HAVE to be experienced - to train yourself. Newbies, no chance.

I was trained by someone who has never done MT - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
An office manager trained me without me knowing she wasn't an MT. I think she also did QA for my reports, too. She didn't train me properly, causing me to do about 5 reports wrong on my first day. The client complained, so this lady told them I was stupid, and nine months later that is STILL her go-to excuse when there's a problem. She would phone me to call me names and insult me.

Last month, someone else who works at the same place said this woman was not and never had been an MT. Now I don't take guff from her, and when she says things like "numerals are never to be used in medical reports", I call her on it. Still, I would like to have known BEFORE I was trained that she had never done MT in her life.

This nonsense is costing us - bottom line - since we are paid by - production

This is why it is important for MTSOs to realize trainers need to be told to follow a script. The cost to us can amount to hundreds of dollars lost during the initial training period. In this economy, that is simply unacceptable.

Again, this is not for new MTs - this is for all MTs - We deserved to be trained on a new job by an objective, informed individual who has the ability to comprehensively provide information. It is VITAL.

First training on new VR. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't get my lines. I was good on the first VR program.

After struggling and asking questions daily, I realized the TL trained me on the WRONG VR program (there are 3 different VR programs where I work)!!!! Yet, she had the nerve to get furious with me because of the questions.

Now she wants to train me on one of the other programs. Maybe I'll be lucky and finally get the correct training for the one I'm using. LOL

let me guess - anon

Spheris Nightmares
Nov 21, 2009

Had nightmares about my company last night.  I was told to go in the office of my boss and do some punishment work.  I sat there in front of this blank computer, would not turn on, and something said to sit in her chair, since she was not there, and start opening all the books and do the worksheets about what a bad person/MT I was.  Then, she popped up in the back of the office in black.  Scary, evil woman!  She said terrible things, and just as I kept telling myself thi ...

I'm interested in figuring out the average VR lines per day an MT can average with M*M as well as how many straight typing lines you get per day.  I know this is dependent on a lot of different factors like account and the skill of the MT but, if you are willing to share, I would love for people to post how many lines per day you average on VR and straight typing. Recently someone here mentioned that the top producers in their region were producing 1200 VR lines per day.  I would ...

I am grateful to have a job today.  I am grateful that work is available on that job.  I am grateful that it pays well.  I am just grateful.  It may not always be like that, but the majority of the time I have work, and can make money to pay my bills.  Not alot of people can say that.  Not to mention when I am sick like I am now, I can work in the comfort of my own home.  That in itself is a blessing!  I wish this for all of us.  Anybody else with gra ...

Here is an example of why we need to keep a sense of humor about what we do.  I am sure it shows other things but after the last day of transcribing this long psych eval -  the only thing I need more than humor is bourbon. Anyone Have A Tip They Can Share For Deleting
Nov 02, 2014

When doing VR, which of course is 98% of the time, I keep my hands at the bottom of the keyboard, left hand near Cntl, right hand hovering over the arrow keys.  Since there is a lot of deleting to do, you have to reach up to the top right corner of the laptop to press delete.  Of course I always have to look to make sure I don't accidentally hit insert.  It's so annoying.  Is there an easier way that I'm not thinking of?  Any suggestions would be SOOOO app ...

I see so much negative posted on this board, that I wanted to share my success, if for no other reason than to show others that it is possible to do well.   I had struggled for a while lately with production because of some personal circumstances, and having a hard time just getting myself in gear and being able to do what needed to be done. I finally decided that I am the only one who can change my financial situation, and took the bull by the horns.  I downloaded a stopwatch/timer ...

Share A Positive About MT Career

Hi fellow MTs.  As we all know, this board can sometimes be full of negative things, and many MTs who once had a good career in this field are experiencing changes that have negatively affected them and their pay and their lives.  My heart does go out to these people; however, I thought it would be fun to talk about some positives we have experienced in this field, even if we would no longer recommend the field to a new person.  Personally, I have been an MT for 5-1/2 years, and ...
