Wanted to share my triumph! - destinyisntfree

Posted: Aug 22, 2011

I see so much negative posted on this board, that I wanted to share my success, if for no other reason than to show others that it is possible to do well.

I had struggled for a while lately with production because of some personal circumstances, and having a hard time just getting myself in gear and being able to do what needed to be done.

I finally decided that I am the only one who can change my financial situation, and took the bull by the horns.  I downloaded a stopwatch/timer program, and set it for 30 minutes..decided I would just power through and see what I could do in 30 minutes, and then play into my competitive nature and keep trying to beat my numbers.

I did nothing but work for 30 minutes, no distractions, no IMs, no email, no internet unless I had to look something up (and then, I set a timer for that, too).  At the end of 30 minutes, I was shocked to see my line count reflect over 300 VR lines.

I was convinced this was a fluke, as there was no way anyone could possibly keep that pace up.  So, I took a 5 minute break and reset my timer, and beat my first score.  I did this for the remainder of my shift.

At the end of my shift, I had actually maintained that pace and did over 3000 VR lines in maybe 6 hours of working.  I am in total shock.

I don't really have an expander program, just autocorrect.  I work on Escription, which is admittedly a good VR platform, and I have been an MT for ten years.  But it is possible.  Even at 4 cpl for VR, I made roughly 30 dollars for every hour I worked that day.  And, I have been able to maintain that for every shift I have worked since.

I just wanted to share so that maybe I could give some of you struggling hope that there are ways to make it better, and you CAN make a living doing this, depending on what you are willing to put into it.  Hope you all have a great day.

I was fully braced and prepared for a barrage of negativity. You know the type. The naysayers that tell you what I described is impossible, et cetera. It makes me feel good to see others as excited as I am about what I have been able to accomplish!

I think that is a lot of why things have gone they way they have in MT, because so many are too busy being negative and putting each other down. If we banded together, and supported each other, things would be so much better for all of us.

I know a lot of people who do "power hours," but an hour seems beyond my reach due to ADHD, so I shot for 30 minutes, and it works for me. I did try doing an hour, and without the short break in between, my numbers are not nearly as good.

Inspiring! - sukiMT

Thanks for sharing your success. I'm going to put my timer to work right now. I love your idea to just keep trying to beat your own line count every time you reset--simple but highly effective and kind of fun too. :)

Good luck! s/m - destinyisntfree

[ In Reply To ..]
I hope you can have success with it. In 2.5 hours, I did almost 1800 VR lines with using this method. I had one 30 minute block that I did about 400 lines, so anything is possible if you set your mind to it. I downloaded a computer program for a timer, and it dings at me when the time is up. If you are interested, it was called xnotestopwatch, I believe.
Thanks! sm - sukiMT

I have a timer that I used back in transcription school, but I also downloaded one online a while ago that is actually much quicker to set and probably very similar to the one you mentioned. You have no idea how much you have motivated me today. I think I really needed a push.

That is exactly what I need to do though I do straight typing. I would love to improve my production. My attention span has not been as it used to be.

Good for you for being proactive. You're inspiring me. I use a timer as well, but not as consistently as I should. I usually do an hour, but may try the 30 minute increment instead to see if that changes anything.

Congratulations on your success.

Reread her original post. - Crackers

She said she did over 300 lines in 30 minutes, not an hour, so it might well be that she did 750 lph. I say more power to her!
Crackers, thank you s/m - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for that! I knew someone would pop up eventually and tell me it was impossible, and I knew people would make assumptions based on not reading all of the post. I just so wish we could go back to the days of MTs supporting each other instead of all of the back biting. It is so discouraging to see that, instead of being happy for me, or asking how I did it to see if they could get the same kind of results, people would just balk at what I say and reply with "Oh, that is impossible. Listen to that crackpot claim you can make money doing this."

I really feel bad for those who think they have to accept what they have and that there is no room for improvement whatsoever.
Plus, at my company you'd add in 1 to 2 cpl - incentive if kept up for a week. NM

incentives - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
My company does offer an incentive, but it is only on the lines typed over the threshold set, which I cannot remember the number right now. I did the math though, and it came out to an extra 80 bucks at the end of the payperiod, if I were to keep that pace the entire payperiod.

The Math - destinyisntfree

[ In Reply To ..]
Okay, I knew someone was going to say what I did was impossible somewhere along the way, and the negativity would show up eventually. I knew it was too good to be true that a group of MTs could actually be supportive of each other for too long.

So this is how I did the math..

Remember each block was 30 minutes...not one one. This was 2-1/2 hours of working earlier this evening.

Block 1: 334 x .04 = 13.36
Block 2: 362 x .04 = 14.48
Block 3: 408 x .04 = 16.32
Block 4: 377 x .04 = 15.08
Block 5: 341 x .04 = 13.64

When you add those together, and divide by 2.5, which is the number of hours it equals (Remember, 30 minute blocks..not one hour blocks), it equals out to an average of 29 dollars an hour. The math is simple. Even used a calculator to verify it..twice, since the skeptics seem to think it was impossible.

I would be more than happy to help anyone in any way I can to try to get similar results. I have been at this for ten years, and do have a few tricks up my sleeves, but they really aren't anything spectacular. The biggest thing was getting focused and doing my best.

And before you ask, no, there was no drop in quality based on the speed. As it happens, my company did My QA review on the first day of my doing this, and my quality score was still above 99% as it always is. I just am wasting less time doing things other than work during my working hours and actually working, imagine that.

Math is right but simpler way ... s/m - Helper

[ In Reply To ..]
.. to calculate and see that she is correct.

Her total lines were 1822 X .04 = 72.88 earned in 2.5 hours

72.88 divided by 2.5 = 29.15 an hour

It doesn't matter what the lines she did per hour were in this case, just the total earned divided by the time spent. However, she can use that as her average lines per hour and estimate what she will make in upcoming sessions and can also use that as a personal goal to try to improve upon for herself.

6 hours x - 300 lines

[ In Reply To ..]
equals 1800 lines, not 3000

multiply that times 2 s/m - destinyisntfree

[ In Reply To ..]
See, now there is all of that skepticism I was expecting. Multiply that times 2. I did 300 lines in 30 mins, not an hour. I did twelve 30 minute blocks...so that equals 6 hours of transcription. 300 x 12 = 3600.

more math - just_sayin

Not dissing you, just saying that 3600 lines divided by 6 hours = 600 lph x 0.04 = $24/hr

[ In Reply To ..]
In the post entitled "The Math" I shared my exact numbers for 2-1/2 hours, and you will see how I cam up with "nearly 30 an hour." Also, if you reread what I said in the original post (and I double checked to make sure that I am not misquoting myself), I said that in 30 minutes, I edited OVER 300 lines, not that it was exactly 300. Consistently, it was over 300 lines for every 30 minute block. When I added the numbers up and divided by the total number of hours, it averaged at roughly 29 dollars an hour.
You give me hope - dmc

I just read someone's comment the other day about using a timer and I just downloaded one tonight as my work week starts tomorrow. I am going to try your method. I struggle and struggle to get my production higher, but in 30 minute blocks that may be obtainable. I get distracted by the dogs wanting to go outside, sometimes by the phone or my husband gripping because he can't find any socks, when they are in his sock drawer and he didn't really look! Ugh! But I can leave anything alone for 30 minutes at a time. Love your idea and I will try it tomorrow. If you have any more tips you could give me I would love to hear them.
Tips - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
DMC, do you use an expander? If not, get in the habit of using one. The only reason I don't have one is cost, and I am hoping that this will make that more possible. What platform do you work on? There are different time-saving ways of doing things with different platforms, and it would be easier to offer you some advice knowing what environment you work in.

The thing with the 30 minute blocks is that it is easier to be able to get people to understand you need to finish something and will be with them shortly, as opposed to "Well, you need to wait, because I can't take a break for two hours." For better or worse, men just don't understand that we are home, but we can't do what they need right then. Kids don't get it, either.

The other thing that seems to help me, believe it or not, is I have the news on in the background...just noise...for some reason that helps, and I have yet to figure out why.

Me too with the TV on, low just for noise - lka

Great news Destiny. I just done working about 3-1/2 hours extra at my job because it was super-busy. I did 1218 lines in 3-1/2 hours, not as good as you but not bad either.

I also work on escription and just use auto-correct, have lots of short-cuts in there. I do mostly VR which I have come to love more than straight typing. Been an MT for about 30 years. One thing I learned about auto-correct recently (when someone said you couldn't save big chunks of work in there) is that you can indeed. Maybe you know this already, but all you do is block what you have typed, say for physical exam or ROS or whatever. Block it, hit Alt F3 and a box comes up that you can name it something, then when this bad dictator comes up again, it is there. I usually name is after teh MD last name (i.e. forestpe) for physical exam. You just start typing forest and you will see it on teh screen and just hit return. Saves a lot of time for the more difficult ones.

I also downloaded that timer thing you use and will try it next time. I try to push myself for an hour at a time; the first hour is fine, but then I find myself dragging. I love your 30-minute method... Thanks for sharing!!
Hey, thanks! s/m - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't know about ALT F3 for adding to AutoText. I had been using InstanText for many years, but it is not compatible with Windows 7 without upgrading to the newer version, and I cannot afford that right now. I dabbled with shorthand last week, but I just cannot get used to that particular program.
Alt-F3 - Mimi
[ In Reply To ..]
I tried to follow your tip for using Alt-F3 but it's not working for me. What version of escription are you using?
Using Escript 8 for 1 account and Escript 9.12 - lka
[ In Reply To ..]
I have windows XP and word 2003 and it works on both of these. I do it so automatically that I could be wrong about Alt F3. Try Cntrl F3 or Shift F3. Also, when I try to "find" what I saved I cannot find it anywhere but it is definitely there because like I saw, if I just start to tyle the doctor's name (cuz that is how I name them), it starts to come up, you like Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. All you do is hit enter and the whole paragraph is there or if you have more than 1 paragraph.

Hope that helps, but it just has a bigger memory for characters than just straight auto-correct.
Alt-F3 - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
It is a word shortcut, opens autotext, but if the company you work for has copy and paste disabled in EditScript, then it may not work.
Why would they disable it? It only helps us in the document - lka
[ In Reply To ..]
We cannot copy and paste into another application such as wordpad, but can within the document itself. I would be really bummed if they did that. They don't disable auto-correct or autotext, whatever you call it. How is that hurting the company? The funny thing is, the trainer that trained me on this last account said it did not work for her? I am really confused now, as I am NOT tech savy at all, but just know that it works.
Not sure, to be honest - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
All I know is that, when I worked on EditScript 8, I couldn't use InstanText, and was told that this was because copy-paste was disabled, so who the heck knows. I use EditScript, but when I first attempted the F3 I was just working in word on some work I do part time around my other schedule. Will check it when I log into EditScript again (I work on EditScript 9.10), and get back to ya'll.

Thank you so much for sharing your example of what has worked for you and encouraging others! I would love to talk with you more about productivity tips.

A free program that you can use as an expander is AutoHotKey. It is a powerful program that you can use for macros as well, but you can also use it as a basic expander. You can also create normals with it or use it for physical exams, ROS, etc. There are some neat scripts that allow you to automatically number things like medication lists, etc.

I always play some of my favorite CDs in the background just for some background noise and to put me in a better mood for typing.
Autohotkey - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
You know, I tried AutoHotKey at one point, and just couldn't get the hang of it. Someone had suggested it to me years ago to use in conjunction with InstanText, and I just never figured out how to make it work. I have dabbled with PC Shorthand, which will allow you to pay monthly, and is a much lower cost program, but I found that it did not have the features I was looking for, and really wasn't much better than just using AutoCorrect. Both require memorization, neither learns on it's own, and they both expand with the space bar, which after having used IT for so many years, I just could not get used to again.

You can feel free to contact me by email using the link, and we can chat about things, if you would like. I am always willing to try to help wherever I can. I do normally work third shift, but I'm on a lot during the day as I have children, so sleep comes in short spurts.
Authotkey - Cathy
[ In Reply To ..]
AutoHotKey is easy to use once you get the hang of it. You can use it as an expander by simpling sending keystrokes. For example, if you wanted to use btw for "by the way," your script would just be:
::btw::
Send, by the way

You can also use it for much more advanced functions than that. I'm trying to get a better handle on programming in general to try to do more with it. I have some scripts that will automatically number for you, search websites, insert dates, fix demographics issues on my account, etc. If you need to do something faster and you can do it with keystrokes (or the mouse), you can do it with AutoHotKey. It will allow you to send mouse clicks with keystrokes so that you don't have to reach for the mouse. For example, on one of my accounts the only way to change the worktype is by using the mouse, but I have made a shortcut to send the mouse click for me so I can just type a few keys and have it selected, much faster for me. You can also use it for normals or physical exams as you can send a block of text that is already formatted.

I do think that InstantText is probably better to use as an expander because you can have multiple expansions assigned to the same shortcuts, you can utilize singles, and the conclusions are wonderful once it learns some of your common phrases.

I work early mornings(start at 4 a.m.) and have kids at home with me during the summer, so I know what you mean about sleep (or lack thereof).

[ In Reply To ..]

understand what you're saying, but ... - Ayn

[ In Reply To ..]
I have found that I need more breaks as I get older, but STILL - OP's talking about 30-minute blocks of time. No offense, but if you can't work 30 minutes straight without a break you might want to rethink MTing as your career.

I agree with OP -- IF the work is available an MT CAN make a very good wage. It is about focus and self-discipline. When you are working, you have to work. If you need a break, take a break, but if you are taking breaks, don't also interrupt yourself while typing. And because we are paid (usually) on production, you have to remember that you are not paid for breaks. Fair or unfair, it is what it is.

I think the OP's original point was that a decent income can be made with MT if one focuses and stays on task, and I completely agree. That is provided you are working somewhere where you do not run out of work constantly and you work on a good platform/program.

Yes, that is kind of what I was going for. - destinyisntfree

[ In Reply To ..]
I will admit that the platform/transcription program does make a huge difference. If I was still working on ExText, I don't think I would have the same results. I still think I could do okay, but not as well as I am with Escription. For me, it became a matter of prioritizing and knowing what I wanted and doing whatever it took to get there.

As far as work availability, that is why so many of us work for more than one place. I do personally have a small IC contract that fills the gaps where I have no work, although that is admittedly not that often, maybe once a month, if that, and usually, my company is asking people to put in extra hours, so running out of work has not been a major factor for me. I have one really good primary account, with a low ESL percentage, and then my secondary and tertiary accounts are not too bad either, so that also helps.

Ignore the negative and good for you! - ME

[ In Reply To ..]
Good for you. Ignore all the people that seem to be trying to find a way to discredit you or say it isn't possible, etc. I am amazed that people don't just say, "Hey if it works for you, good job!" Why do people care so much if the math was exact or if you shouldn't be doing 30 minutes because of attention or whatever. Whatever happened to the old rule, if you can't say something nice then don't say anything. Too often people focus on the negative and why things can't be done. Sad really. Again, good for you!
Thanks - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
I just think it is sad. If we as MTs could get past all of the negativity, we could very likely learn from each other and all improve our lot in life. We all have tricks and tips on how we do things, and while not every method will work for everyone, it is likely that someone somewhere along the way will teach us something that will help us make a better life for ourselves. I have been doing this for over ten years, and what I love the most is there is always room to learn and improve, and I learn something every day.

Good for you for starting in your late teens. I think MT is a great career, and still do, although I think the newer MTs have much, much more of a challenge than an old fossil like me. (I'm pushing 70. Geez, Louise.) Anyway, I truly have enjoyed mentoring a lot of younger folks. I hope that none of you--young or old--were affected by the earthquake in the East Coast today. Sounds great!

I am not sure what to do about my situation. I get lots of horrible quality audio files, lots of short reports (so lots of data entry and time lost sending/opening reports), and lots of extras that have to be done (like checking doctor's schedules, etc. because they often don't say which facility they are in) and often can't even understand the patients' names.

Any advice for such a situation? With all the talk on here, I am terrified to try another company and would have to start over with no expanders as well.

I have poor line counts but not sure how much is me and how much is my situation.

Well....... - destinyisntfree

[ In Reply To ..]
Have you tried discussing the situation with your supervisors? How long have you been working there? I am going to be honest, in that in the situation you are in, if my supervisors couldn't offer anything to help me get my production up, I would probably look for something else. If a job is not allowing me to do my best work due to circumstances beyond my control, and I have made every effort to improve and increase my numbers, then to me, it is time to move on. Never feel too afraid to try something new that you stay in a situation that is not the best fit. Not all companies will be a good match for all MTs. That is just the reality of it. If you want to contact me by email, and explain a little better your setup, maybe there is some advice I can offer, but without too many specifics, it is tough to know what to tell you to do.

I have been there a few years, and it's the only MT job I have ever had. I have discussed with them various times, but the things they suggest to help I am already doing or don't work well when I try them. The things I suggest to them that might help (from their end), they basically ignore. It sort of ends up feeling like a political discussion (talking in circles).

I know of a few fast people in the company and a few slow, but we don't have contact and are given no information for the most part, so the majority of MTs in between I have know idea how they are doing. Also, we don't all have the same accounts, so it is difficult to compare anyway.

So many times when I feel I am moving along at a good pace, my line count still sucks. It feels like unless my movements were fast enough to be a complete blur, it's not going to be fast enough.

Any tips on what to look for in another company if I try that?

Much appreciated!

question for you - destinyisntfree
[ In Reply To ..]
Is your experience clinic or acute care? If it is clinic is where you may run into a bit of a snag, because most companies want acute care experience, but there are some that will let you test anyway, Nuance, I believe, being one of them, and if you do well enough on the testing, then you are golden. I know a lot of people grumble about Nuance, and I used to work for Focus, which they now own, and had some issues, but keep in mind that no two people will have the same experience exactly, and what didn't work for one may be a perfect fit for another.

Regarding what to look for, don't get too hung up on the pay rate. Just because a pay rate is lower, does not mean you can't make some decent money there. Environment can play as big or bigger a role, depending on the company.

Also, the quality of the testing files will not necessarily reflect what you will get day to day. A lot of times, companies go with the worst possible files to see how you handle them, and I have been told by many a recruiter that leaving a blank is alright, but guessing is not.

Talk to people that work at different companies. Ask them if the company is supportive and tries to help the MTs be the best they can be. Ask them if they feel like a number. Ask them if they feel the company will work with them when they have a problem, or if they seem like they could care less and just want automatons (there are quite a few of both, incidentally).

That should give you a starting point. if the company you are with doesn't seem to want to help you improve, and you feel like you are not able to do your best work, then it is time to move on.

I hear what you're saying, but there are many MTs who had that work discipline (me included) since the beginning of their careers, but with pay cuts, bonuses and incentives taken away with barely no notice, etc., there's no wiggle room because they ALWAYS used every minute productively.

So the big producers, the efficiency-oriented MTs, and usually the MTs who are sole support for their households are, as usual, the losers.

Luckily, I've found a good place, so I'm making a decent wage again, but it took near-financial ruin to get here.

Another thought for you in your great success is to be sure that you've registered for EditScript certification on your account. It keeps track of your progress of your FAR usage and I think has 3 levels. May not earn you any more money or whatever, but looks good on the resume.

You know, I didn't even know about that...that would be on the escription website somewhere, I assume?

Here's how s/m - eS helper

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, you can just do it at the website once you're signed in. Or, if you're in EditScript, just click on HELP, then TRAINING, then EDITSCRIPT MT TRAINING. Then once that page comes up, it's only one click to "register" and it will regiester you. Now, if you look further down that page, it will show you your progress in terms of Y or N for whether or not you have achieved that FAR. Different requirements for the 3 levels; I know the Expert one is 5 FARS and 500+ lines per hour average for a solid 3 months. Once you achieve it, then it goes to your supervisor for verification of your quality before they issue your certification. They will contact you and ask you for your sup's name and contact info. Good luck! Any questions, feel free to write me and I'll answer anything I can from my experience.

WOW-I Get Laid Off, Wanted To Share It With You...
Apr 04, 2013

and now some are calling it a hoax. I have spent most of the day talking to UE and my states Food Share Program. Working from home for so long, I wanted to share my news with my fellow MTs. I thought they would understand how I felt. I appreciated some of the MTs wishing me luck, but I am surprised and sad to see that so many have become so "cold" that they can't even open their minds and believe someone. I still wish all MTs the best of luck. I will be fine. Even, at my age, they can ...

I was typing my usual docs, hands flying across the keyboard when I typed "bilateral toe and knee replacements". I stopped and thought to myself...hmmm, they do toe replacements? wow!  Then my brain kicked in and realized I should have typed....you guessed it, "bilateral total knee replacements"  ARRGGHHHH, got a good laugh at my own expense out of that one! ...

Jun 11, 2010

Wanted To Go PT
Jun 04, 2013

My plan was to retire PT and work PT, however, I was told MModal is no longer allowing employees to go PT only if you are grandfathered in.  Yet, today I see on MTJobs MModal is looking for PT workers.  If I do not go PT, I will lose quite a bit of money monthly from SS retirement.  I also was told we are only allowed to take 3 sick days a year.   ...

If You're Willing To Share...
May 22, 2012

I'm interested in figuring out the average VR lines per day an MT can average with M*M as well as how many straight typing lines you get per day.  I know this is dependent on a lot of different factors like account and the skill of the MT but, if you are willing to share, I would love for people to post how many lines per day you average on VR and straight typing. Recently someone here mentioned that the top producers in their region were producing 1200 VR lines per day.  I would ...

I've been an IC for 10 years with the same company.  Made excellent money working only part time.  This company has now lost a lot of accounts and work has slowed to almost nothing (had no work so far today).  Now I'm looking into getting a job through one of these national companies and have been reading the posts made here and have sent my resume to a couple places.  I feel shell-shocked with all the questions.  Can anyone tell me what these na ...

Got Some Gratitude To Share
Apr 06, 2011

I am grateful to have a job today.  I am grateful that work is available on that job.  I am grateful that it pays well.  I am just grateful.  It may not always be like that, but the majority of the time I have work, and can make money to pay my bills.  Not alot of people can say that.  Not to mention when I am sick like I am now, I can work in the comfort of my own home.  That in itself is a blessing!  I wish this for all of us.  Anybody else with gra ...

Here is an example of why we need to keep a sense of humor about what we do.  I am sure it shows other things but after the last day of transcribing this long psych eval -  the only thing I need more than humor is bourbon. (BTW, I gave up and am doing the last section of this report this morning.  My poor brain couldn't handle any more last night.) “… which suggests some risk for future problems in the future if treatment in this area of treatment efforts are un ...

Anyone Have A Tip They Can Share For Deleting
Nov 02, 2014

When doing VR, which of course is 98% of the time, I keep my hands at the bottom of the keyboard, left hand near Cntl, right hand hovering over the arrow keys.  Since there is a lot of deleting to do, you have to reach up to the top right corner of the laptop to press delete.  Of course I always have to look to make sure I don't accidentally hit insert.  It's so annoying.  Is there an easier way that I'm not thinking of?  Any suggestions would be SOOOO app ...

I Just Wanted To Take A Quick Minute To Say I Really

An hour or two ago, I had a word question and put it on the word board and within a matter of five minutes, someone posted the answer.  I know we all have our own opinions and experiences but I am an MT with 20 plus years of experience and my mind just went blank on this word.  Well, I was glad this fellow MT helped me out, so I did not have to send this to QA.  I looked up the word again myself just to be certain not that I doubted this other MT and then I took a minute to thank ...

your job-hunting results.  There are a lot of people with 10-20+ years' experience seeking work.  I'm in the same boat.  My experience so far has been that NOBODY is interested in hiring older, highly-experienced MTs.  Any of you starting to feel that vibe?
