Coders- best option / method for educating ourselves on ICD-10? - icd-10

Posted: Oct 02, 2012

What is the best option/method for educating ourselves on ICD-10?  Has anyone started? Looking for recommendations.  I would like to get a head start now on my own.  I sort of put it out of my mind when they delayed it.  AAPC seems to have a course.  AHIMA looks like they have webinars.  Has anyone tried these?

I would go with what your employer provides. - Are you a coder yet?

I have already learned it. Your plan of action will depend on what kind of coding you do. Outpatient coders will only require 15 hours or so and only the diagnosis code set. Figure on 50 for inpatient and include the procedure code set.

I saw an Ingenix computer-based training that I liked. The AHIMA training is classic AHIMA--dry and tedious. Really grim webinars. Have not seen AAPC's.

Much of what I have seen has been grossly overpriced. I would go with your employer's training or maybe the training from Ingenix.

thanks, yes I - Code Inpt and outpt

So, I will need all of it. Thanks for the Ingenix tip. I agree AHIMAs are dry and expensive. I just want to get a taste for myself before we go into actual training when we get down to the wire.

In that case . . . - I forgot about

You can download the dx and guidelines from the website. Try the Ingenix instruction books, especially for the procedures. The dx set is not much different. You will see the same conditions, same overall arrangement, same code selection process, just different numbers. Guidelines are similar, but there are some differences. Not a big deal.

There is a Faye Brown for ICD-10. That is the one I would recommend with Ingenix Optum Insight or whatever they are now . . .

The px are completely different, but fun. You actually get to use your brain. You will need to know more anatomy for that, but do not get sucked into taking another college A&P class thinking it will help. You need specific information, not more vague overview. Ingenix has a book just for that.

For the dx, you need pathophysiology, not A&P, and you need something more than what is taught in associate's degree or career college programs. I recommend texts used in 4-year nursing programs, like Huether and McCance. Gould, which is often used in RHIA programs, is fine, too. I think the key here is finding a book that you can enjoy and also use as a reference.
Thanks, - I will check it out! nm

I Think The Q Should Be Educating All The Doctors
Mar 24, 2011

that they are dictating for ASR and how to do it, punctuation and all. They need to take some responsibility for this. If they would dictate for ASR, ASR output would likely be better. I base this on the doctors who do dictate everything, including punctuation and the fact the output is good for this doctors. Although, these doctors do tend to speak in a more understandable manner. I spend too much time stopping to punctuate, and I shouldn't need to. ...

Sep 20, 2011

Sorry in advance for the length of this post but I've been reading and I just couldn't sit still any longer.  I'm a long-time MQ employee - this is my 14th year.  When I first started out, the income was crazy.  Literally I made more money in bonuses and incentives than I made in my regular production pay.  It was not uncommon for my paychecks to be in the $2000 range.  Over the years, the bonuses and incentives ended, and to help supplement my income (I t ...

There Is Another Option.....
Oct 24, 2013

Our lives have become totally ruined by this company. Unfortunately, commiserating with each other, while helping to alleviate anxiety, will not solve the problem. I have thought of this option, and some friends have suggested the same thing, Class Action Suit!  There must be a way we can recoup our lost wages. I cannot believe that what this company has done to us is legal.  It may take awhile, but aside from finding another job that pays better (which is just not available), I believ ...

Another Option For Transitioning From MT
Mar 24, 2010

Transcribing the dictation of various physician assistants made me wonder what was involved in becoming a PA, so I looked into the PA programs in my state.  I have a BA and already have all the science prereqs, so I decided to apply.  I'm retiring from my full-time job (not medical related) in April and wondered what I would do with myself with just my part-time MT job to keep me busy.  Now I know.  I start in the PA program with the summer session.  If you have a ...

As An IC, Is It Really An Option To Get Paid On Time?
Nov 05, 2009

I'm just curious. I have worked as an IC and an employee. With the last job I took as an IC, I remember in the interview the woman speaking with me said "and the woman you'll be working for always pays on time." At the time, I thought that was rather odd. I mean, why would someone need to say that? Of course I get paid on time. Just like they expect their work done on time. Well it was a huge red flag that I ignored, because then on 4 different occasions over the next 10 months I didn& ...

Nuance Employees, Do You Have An HSA Or FSA Option Currently?
Nov 04, 2011

I'm reading about the difference between the two of these, and it looks like the employer withholds a portion of your income to cover medical expenses. Do you currently have any HSA or FSA arrangement with Nuance? ...
