Calling to register with Andrews soon - ready to leave MT sm - Moving forward

Posted: Mar 28, 2012

I had been wondering how I was going to come up with a down payment to register for the Andrews coding course and it looks like I will be able to do it in a week.  I am so happy I could cry buckets.

I have not been an MT as long as some, but I entered the field because I love research and anything medical related.  When I started as an MT, MTSOs still wanted blanks and everything else researched for as perfect a document as possible.  I still have issues with spending too much time trying to figure out blanks, etc,  because my concious will not let me just leave it alone.

I have been researching the field of coding for a LONG time.  I'm ready to take the plunge but understandably scared to death, too.  Change is good.  Change is good.  :D

I just wanted to say thanks for the honesty, clarity, and directness on this site.  It is refreshing and made me feel right at home - sincerely. Everything reinforced what I knew all along- that I am in the wrong field.

I will be 56 in July.  I have redifined myself physically by losing 58 pounds (129), changed my lifestyle by eating clean foods only and seriously working out regularly (not just cardio -- need to lift those weights ladies), and mentally putting myself and my needs first. My lifestyle journey has paid off tremendously by boosting my self-confidence, energy, mind, and health. My only regret is that I wish I had done this sooner rather than later, but hindsight is 20/20.

Honestly, I don't think I would have been ready for this course if I had not worked on my personal issues first, which took 2 years, but now I'm ready to begin my new journey.

BTW, here are some of the sites I delved into, and once I got started I just kept on researching.

AAPC (includes salary surveys), local chapters near you.
AHIMA (includes salary surveys), maybe local chapter near you.
DecisionHealth, including CodingAnswers, ACDIS and justcoding.com
PMIC
Ingenix (publisher of high-quality coding-related products)
Z-Health
American Hospital Association
American Medical Association (owners of the CPT code set)
CMS (Medicare)

I don't remember who posted the Medicare site but I actually enjoyed wading through it.

Good for you!!!! - Girl4givn

I'm so happy for you!!!! I get up every morning and tell myself I'm going to embark on a similar change but yet, here I sit typing. :) I'm truly excited for you. Post again and let us know how it goes for you.

Studying coding is good for your brain - In My Opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
You know how you're always reading about this or that helping people stay smarter, avoid Alzheimer's Disease, etc., I think coding accomplishes the same thing. It keeps the brain cells working. I do know that for sure.

Great to know! Finally out of menopause fog so brain cells are ready. nm - moving on

Yes, coding is a puzzle, so it IS good for you. - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Learning anything is good for keeing your brain functioning well, but coding is solving problems and basically working puzzles. That is what seems to do the most good.

It never stops, either. There is more to learn every day. Things change constantly so you have to keep up. Few records are the same, so you don't get stuck doing the same thing over and over.

I think you made a good choice with Andrews. They seem to have a good program with high expectations for you. I do know they will work with you rather than expecting you to flounder around on your own. Their tuition cost is ALL the cost, too, so you do not need to worry about extra expenses for books and whatnot.

Well, except for erasers. I don't think they provide them. Might want to get some of those white Stadtler erasers, the white kind, or those Pentel stick ones that have the white eraser in a plastic pen-like sheath. I went through several packs a year at first. Mechanical pencil leads, too. You will burn out pencil sharpeners trying to keep up with points on wooden pencils. ;)

School supplies! I remember using those Pentel stick ones in college. Loved those things AND mechanical pencils. I will definitely stock up.

Just a few more days. I'm looking forward to getting my package from Andrew and studying. :D

Thanks! Definitely will! nm - moving on

I'm on a similar journey...Best of luck to you! - MT2Coder

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been an MT 19 years now, but I've taken a medical coding course through my community college. I believe a more in-depth course would have been better, but I was able to take the class, study on my own, and pass the AAPC CPC certification. After reading posts on this board I'm going to now look for a course in inpatient coding to sit for my CCS.

Once again...Best of luck to you!
Thank you! And good luck to you, too! sm - moving on
[ In Reply To ..]
Were you able to find work as a coder with the CPC or are you still working as an MT?
Still an MT - MT2Coder

I just passed the certification on March 9. I've updated my resume and sent it out to a bunch of different places. I'm looking for job-hunting strategies as I am short (none...) on experience.

I love this post! - Hopeful CMT

Good for you! I'm right behind you. I'm 47 and just about to come up with the tuition for Andrews myself. I have also been doing a lot of research and thinking about it for a while now and I definitely think it's time.

It sounds like you have been making many positive changes in your life. Again, good for you and I sincerely wish you luck!

Thank you so much! sm - movin on

I'm looking forward to another positive change. I didn't think I'd have the funds this soon but things just worked out. Good luck to you, too. See you on the Andrews message boards. :)

Some would say that when - things work out

You and I will be fellow classmates soon! - DJ

I know exactly whereof you speak! I am in my 50s and feel it is high time I begin Andrews. I have been an MT far too long.. spent too many YEARS analyzing. While I was analyzing, I have nearly completed an Associates (Fall 2012). Not sure if that will help at all in my search for a coding job, but I figure I should finish what I started. Will be starting Andrews in April!! Am super relieved I have finally made the decision.

I enjoyed your words of wisdom regarding taking care of your health. So many of us take it for granted, or worst, have just given up. I do not have a weight issue, never had. But, gravity is against me. So, I hit the gym a couple times a week just to keep a positive attitude and fight that damn ticking clock!

Thanks for posting the list of sites you have used in your research. I have been there too, and I am sure others will find it useful.

That is wonderful, DJ! sm - moving on

I'm looking forward to hitting the books. Haven̢۪t done that since college besides my adding reading, which I now do mainly on my Kindle, so this should be interesting. I already have a separate space set up for studying, have blocked out time, and told everyone to leave me the heck alone when that door is closed. Make sure you̢۪re pulling lifting some weights at the gym. Women need to be strong everywhere. :D

Welcome classmate! - Squarepeg

I'll see you around on the andrews boards!

Thanks. I registered on Friday. Get books Monday. sm - moving on

I really "LIKE" Andrews School! They have their own "book," too. ;)

I love this post nm - MT

What prior profession did you come from? Were you able to pass the CCS after graduation? How long did it take you to find a job? Did your CCS help even though you had no coding experience? What kind of entity are you working for? Are you glad you chose Andrews? Any other comments for me? (I am about to apply there) ...

I Am Almost Ready To Leave This Job
Jun 29, 2014

I am asking this simply because I pay ZERO attention to emails the company sends out, I have sat here and simply done my job and kiss their tails because I needed the job..So now that I don't here is the question I have..Do I: 1. Start voicing my opinion as to their asinine audits and 99.7% accuracy garbage simply in response to the QC lead that sends them out or maybe cc some of the suits? Anyone have some names for me to send responses to. And then sit back and wait to be fired fo ...

Ready To Leave Mmodal, Had Enough
May 29, 2012

I've been at Mmodal for many years, part-time, no real complaints until now.  I know a lot of people get transferred to new CCMs quite often and I have as well but this time I went to a very hard account.  I'm willing to learn it but then one day after that transfer I was sent back to my original CCM but that account was made my primary instead of my previous ones.  I keep getting those emails about increasing line count, decreasing inactive time, going "mouseless" and I ...

If I Hire A Subcontractor Do I Have To Register As A Sole Proprieter? Sm
Feb 17, 2010

Not sure how it works - I am consideriing hiring someone to just help me with extra work, but have never done that before.  I want to be sure I do everything legal and appropriately.  Do I register as a sole proprieter and pay social security for her? Anyone know? Or can I just payher and give her a 1099 at the end of the year? ...

Recevied a message from OSI recruiter giving instructions to register for testing?  Anyone know how long it took to receive the confirmation code once registering?  Also any positives/negatives would be appreciate.  I've been doing this since correctotape and typewriter days....I just want to retire (not for a few more years anyway) and have resasonable benefits.  I guess everything is sort of going this way these days, but I guess we have to stick it out.  Could we all just not log in ...

Calling Me On My Day Off To Do OT
Sep 16, 2013

First, let me say, I do like my TSM, she is great and I know she is only doing as she is instructed, but where do these people get the nerve to call me on my day off and think I will stop what I'm doing and help them?  The audacity is mind boggling.  Cut our pay, put most of us in financial ruin, expect more and more for less and less pay and then you want ME to help YOU?  If it wasn't so pathetic, it would almost be funny.  How stupid or maybe greedy do y ...

I AM NOT NAME CALLING ...
Jun 17, 2015

I'm trying to give you all a wake up! I've worked my whole life (50 years) and have never been paid for only half my work. What I'm doing doesn't matter. You have to decide what you're going to do. Voice recognition will get better and medical providers will buy their own. Why pay companies like Nuance to edit when they can do it themselves? Why do you think Nuance is selling Dragon? They know exactly what's coming and want to milk the industry for all they can. In ...

Calling Macro Diva
Sep 29, 2013

Just wondering if it's okay/possible to put my "Call" macros back towards the end of General_Macro? And if so, where?  I tried moving them to just before End Sub and also before Page 1:Selection..., but those locations didn't work.  I'm getting an occasional errant "g" or "L" (apparently related to the GramLiter macro) at the very beginning of my VR text when I run it now, which I didn't have at all before when the "called' macros were at the end.  Was part of the fix ...

I Feel Like Calling Up My QAM And Asking HER What I Should Put In This Report.
Dec 12, 2013

Did the doctor change his mind on the patient's position, or is it just a gap because he got distracted and repeated himself. Gee, should I put modified or not put in that word? I would say the doctor was distracted and repeated himself, but who knows (except QA). I have been smacked too many times to make any decision. This is what happens when you treat a dog like we have been treated - too leary to take any action! Should have included that in the company survey! ...

Calling On Macro Diva Again, If You're Still About.
May 15, 2014

I don't know where to begin with trying to record a macro for this need myself.  On my main account, we're required to list meds without any following punctuation, but due to other MTSOs also subbing on it (who apparently don't have any specs or just don't have to follow the same specs we do), the lists invariably come through on VR with totally inconsistent punctuation.  Such as this: MEDICATIONS:Ativan,ZofranDexamethasone.DiltiazemLanoxin. But should be this: M ...

AHDI, Or AAMT..or Whatever They Are Calling Themselves These Days
Jul 11, 2011

If anything..they are simply a  Sales Convention for MTSOs and only have their interest at heart.  There are never topics that relate to working as an MT or being properly represented.  Instead we get the never ending changing BOS, or the CMT certification which AGAIN has changed...and btw..took a look a "sample" test and it has NOTHING to do with being an MT!  It was more for a clinician.  We are language specialists..not clinicians.  I have been an MT for over 20 ...

Calling All Radiology Girls........need Input
Dec 13, 2013

I finally have the opportunity to get out of this work-at-home situation and go to a hourly paying job doing radiology transcription.  The only radiology I have done is the usual radiology dictated on reports in the acute care setting.   In your honest opinions, do you think that someone who has been doing acute care for 15 years could transition over to radiology?   Thanks ...

How Long To Wait Before Calling After Sending Resume?

How To Make M*Modal Stop Incessantly Calling Me? I DON'T WANT TO WORK FOR THEM
Jul 09, 2012

I am so sorry if this has been posted before. I looked but didn't see any other posts. I applied with M*Modal a while back but landed a different MT job that I'm happy with. I have done this for years now but have just almost reached the end of what I can take. I have fought retiring, wanted to continue on but I feel the work is just not worth the hassel anymore. We are held to an almost impossible level now, just us, not what kind of dictation is sent our way. Nothing is said to ask others to clean up their dictation to where it is halfway audible but let us have 1 word left off that is not even meaning to the context of the report and we are called on the carpet f ...

I Think I Am Ready To Go Out And Get A Job Other Than MT!
Feb 04, 2013

Been doing MT & QA for 30 years, since I was in high school!  Boy, how things have changed. My kids are grown and in college now, one in Medical School studying to be a doctor, and I think, I am ready now to go out into the rat rate of 9-5 out of the home! Question For QA'ers...How Do You Know When You Are Ready??? Sm
Dec 15, 2009

I would appreciate any information or tips you would be willing to share.  Thanks! ...
