I think I am ready to go out and get a job other than MT! - CrazyKat

Posted: Feb 04, 2013

Been doing MT & QA for 30 years, since I was in high school!  Boy, how things have changed. My kids are grown and in college now, one in Medical School studying to be a doctor, and I think, I am ready now to go out into the rat rate of 9-5 out of the home!

Thinking, administrative assistant, type of position.  My wrists and hands hurt, CTS, and can't get it fixed because I can't be without pay for 6 weeks waiting to heal, etc. etc. etc.

It was a fantastic career, all-in-all.  I got to raise my kids and be there for their every need. Now, it is time to me first.

What do all of you think?

"race" bad typo! - CrazyKat

not as bad as the one I almost made today - off topic

Repetition can make for interesting typos... you know... like you always have to concentrate real hard when the patient's name is Norman, because 99% of the time the first thing that comes off the fingers is Normal... Normal Smith.

Anyhow, I was emailing my (new) boss today and instead of typing, "Have a pleasant evening," I typed, "have a pleasant female." Thank goodness I caught it in time ;-)

it was a long day, frazzled, new job, and I guess I was on automatic pilot... could've been a rough landing!

Yep, I'm out, too (after 37 years of MT!) as soon as - I can find a job doing something else.

[ In Reply To ..]
Although it seems like a shame to take all I've learned throughout the years and just throw it away and not use it anymore, I'm also not going to give it away for free any longer! If someone will pay me more to do data entry or answer telephones, then I'll gladly throw it away, and good riddance!

I'm ready to join the commute & office rat race once again, only with a brand new mindset. Whenever the long drive or the office politics start to get me down, I'll remind myself how lucky I will be to have an 8-hour-a-day, 40-hour-a-week job once again, instead of 10-14 hours a day, 6-7 days a week. For PEANUTS. And will think often on how nice it will be to have a paycheck I can rely on, and real paid vacation time again. And how nice it will be, once the work day is over, to LEAVE THE OFFICE and go home to do what I want to do - for a change! To have the time and energy to do creative things in my spare time, instead of trying to make up lines after a week of NJA. To be able to fix my car when it breaks down. To be able to go to the dentist, or take my pets to the vet. To once again be able to start putting money away into savings and/or retirement again.

Do your research about the software programs that scan resumes and unless they "meet the grade" they won't even make it to the person's desk who is doing the interview.

Another suggestion is to start off accepting temporary jobs, because most jobs want RECENT experience, and working from home is not considered that.

before venturing - SayWhat

[ In Reply To ..]
Huh. Why would working from home not be considered experience? Is that like taking college courses online isn't really considered going to college? Or. Something.
Actually, there's a lot of truth in what she says, - especially if youre trying to change fields.
[ In Reply To ..]
What's worse, I'm getting a lot of that from in-house MT jobs I apply for, as well. Most of them have their work in-house because the work from MTSOs just keeps getting shoddier, with offshoring, VR, and underpaid American MTs. So it's like the last thing any of them want is an MT that worked at home for one of those MTSOs. It's like the Kiss Of Death.

Working for an MTSO and then going back on site may be one issue but it is not the only one. The employer can test your skills to see if you do shoddy work so that is only part of it. I've never worked at home, but have worked with people who have, were out of the workplace for a long time and then came back on site. Basically, they forget about office ethics and how to conduct themselves. Some of them have never used the telephone in a professional way, don't know how to transfer calls and panic if they have to help someone. Some of them forget about confidentiality in the work place, being "out of the loop" creeps up on people in subtle ways. Some employers might perceive someone who works at home as someone not willing to stick to a schedule. Getting up, getting dressed and getting to work on time should not be a big deal, but employers might think that it would be for someone who hasn't done it in years. Handling difficult coworkers is also an issue and there is not much chance to deal with that at home. I don't mean to offend anyone, but having seen both sides of the coin, those are my observations.
You certainly do a lot of generalizing here... - betsy

"they, they, they" as though you're speaking of some strange species. And "I've never worked at home." About says it all. I was at home for years and returned to in-house, then back at home again. I certainly did not forget my social skills and remembered how to treat physicians and others in person and on the phone. What makes you such an expert??
Why? - Anonymous
[ In Reply To ..]
Because I had a recent experience with an MT who had worked at home for years and recently came back on site, I shared an office with her and trained her for a new job. From the beginning, she tried to discuss religion with me (made negative remarks about my faith), yelled questions to me when I was in the rest room, and totally botched a phone call from an outside party, I had to apologize when they called back. She also informed us that she "did not do e-mail or phone calls." There were other things as well, but that's all you need to know. This is my experience with one person, there have been others. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but that has been my experience. I'm glad you were able to retain your social skills. Also, I was only saying how I thought potential employers might perceive people who have done nothing but work at home, and I also apologized in advance if I offended anyone, apparently I have. By the way, I have worked at home briefly over the years but it was not a good fit for me, the time I spent doing it is hardly worth mentioning.
But I worked at home, and have a job outside now... - wheres_my_job

I'm amazed to find that in some ways, my social skills are BETTER than some who've never worked at home!

Maybe when you work by yourself for so long, it is so WONDERFUL to be part of a team, you're really motivated to be a great team player...'cause you know what the alternative is.

I've got difficult coworker issues where I am now...but we're working through them...although I only want to work part-time (3 days a week and not 5). So there's the time issue. But there are part-time jobs out there, and I'm gonna find one, if I can't drop my hours where I am.

So I disagree, working at home is always a negative - it can be a positive, in shaping a really great in-house employee.

DONE THAT ALREADY - CINDY

GO FOR IT! ALL I CAN SAY. I did this job since 1984 and got so fed up with it I went to school for something new and have been doing it since last December. Now I am going back to school for my second time to get even better, and believe me once you are away from the computer you will never look back. I do not miss it at all. We are all brainwashed that this is a great job to have as an MT, but they are sucking us for every penny they can get out of us. There is life after MT. Yes it was great for a while till maybe 2000 or 2005, but now its over. I used to go to McDonald's drive through thinking your probably making more than I am and maybe I should get a job here. Good luck to all the people who stay in it, but its pretty bad.

It's been a long time since I've eaten at McDonald's... - I cant afford it! Cant wait to get OUT of MT!

having to loosen the laces all the way down because my feet are no longer swollen. I'm not working every weekend. I'm moving around, socializing, and like you I don't miss the computer at all.

I would not go back to MT again unless I couldn't get another job.

Over 22 years in medical transcription and I'm out too.

Listening to speech recognition with a stethoscope like I'm listening to gnat heartbeats is too much. The quality of their "verbatim" is horse manure, and I don't want my name on that mess.

There is so much wrong with SR where to start?

It's like one day I had a crazy idea of applying for a job and they said, "So, you are a rocket scientist? Prove it. Let us test you on your rocket science knowledge before you get hired. You must know how to build one, how to fly one, how to work on one, and know how to troubleshoot all maintenance issues.

Wow, they are impressed and hire me. Now, they say, go ahead and muck these barn stalls and clean up all that horse poop, and when you finish go ahead and fashion that into a 99% perfect spaceship. It must fly, and it must be impeccable, but the kicker is we are going to pay you about four bucks an hour to do it and be glad we gave you a job.

I say, "No sale. Take your job and shove it. Muck your own stalls baby, I'm outta here."

OBTW . . . . SR QA - S99

[ In Reply To ..]
Let's be honest, what YOU do is much EASIER than what an MT does. The work you do has been cleaned up considerably.

Let's be honest, what you do is much the same as a baby bird sitting in the next waiting for the momma bird to bring your dinner. Momma bird hunts the worm and pre-chews it for you so you can digest it better - don't kid yourselves, what the MT does is the grunt work because somedays cleaning up VR is worse than a full-time job cleaning cat litter boxes!

Pure poetry, thanks for sharing - wheres_my_job

Yeah - they want you to design a submarine, build it, and operate it at 99%-100% accuracy. What they forget is that their submarine has a screen door in the back of it (which is VR/SR as the screen door) and for that they want you to operate it at $4 an hour and not drown.

I, too, have done this job for 30 years. It used to be a good job, but not now. I'm tired of 30-year-olds with no experience telling me I am not a good transcriptionist. When I read what they type, the mistakes make me cringe. I don't know when it changed, but it is not for the better. I hope you can find a job somewhere since the 30-year-olds don't like hiring "older workers."

I'm guessing you mean a 30-year-old QA telling you . . . surely I can count on the fingers of one hand how many QA are humble enought to admit "they" made the mistake. I really don't understand why they become so arrogant.

Good luck. I have the same problems as you. I have been sending out resumes since August and not one call for an interview: Unit secretary, admin assistant, anything I think I am qualified for. Nothing! I am still sending them out thinking one day, someone might actually call me.

I'm just scared to death of jumping from the frying pain into the fire.  I know there have to be better companies out there.  I work on 15+ accounts, make no money to speak of, my boss makes me feel guilty if I want 2 hours off, forgets to send me e-mails that she sends everyone else, changed my PTO after it was already approved, and I could go on.  Today may be notice day after 12 years with this company. ...

I have done this for years now but have just almost reached the end of what I can take. I have fought retiring, wanted to continue on but I feel the work is just not worth the hassel anymore. We are held to an almost impossible level now, just us, not what kind of dictation is sent our way. Nothing is said to ask others to clean up their dictation to where it is halfway audible but let us have 1 word left off that is not even meaning to the context of the report and we are called on the carpet f ...

Question For QA'ers...How Do You Know When You Are Ready??? Sm
Dec 15, 2009

I've got over 16 years of experience with both acute care and multispecialty clinic.  I'm tired of being insulted by being offered line rates that I would have starved on 10+ years ago.  I'm very interested in pursuing a QA position.  For those of you who have done or are doing QA, how did you know when you were qualified to handle it?
