which transcription service should I work for? - ng

Posted: Dec 05, 2013

The hospital I worked for recently outsourced their transcription department to Nuance.  Because of their extremely high insurance rates, I decided not to go with them and am therefore unemployed.  I have over 20 years of experience transcribing all specialties except pathology and my strong suit is radiology.  Any advice anyone can give as to which transcription service I should look into would be greatly appreciated.  I am looking to become an employee not an independent contractor.

Work For? - MT4evr

You should have gone with Nuance just to have a job and then start looking, because it is really difficult to find a company to work for and if you want to be an employee, harder yet. You could apply for M*Modal, but that is worse than Nuance or at least equal to. I would try and get on with Nuance and go from there. Good luck!

Thanks but Nuance is not an option for me because of their ridiculously high insurance rates.

i don't understand... - self insured MT

... why you would turn down a job based on the insurance they offer. Is it mandatory for you to take their insurance? I would go back and see if you can still get in, then get your own insurance elsewhere. Besides, once the employee mandates kick in, a lot of companies will probably drop their insurance and pay the fine instead.

My company offered me insurance but I turned it down and kept what I already had on my own.

Having a job should be your first priority. Then you can look for insurance or look for another job, but you will at least have income. Good luck to you.

I don't understand why you would turn down company-offered insurance. Having a job with insurance is my priority. I have a husband with health issues and if it wasn't for the insurance I had with the hospital I worked for, we would have lost everything. If I would have gone with the service the hospital chose, I would have had to pay 600 a month to insure both myself and my husband.
i want to be in control - self insured MT

By purchasing my own insurance, I'm in control of it. I'm not at the whim of whatever insurance the company decides to go with from one year to the next.

Also, the job I had before my current job had offered insurance, but luckily I kept my own. Our coverage was based on our production, and when the work dried up, had I not had my own insurance I would've lost my coverage.

Also, since I have my own insurance, I don't have to worry about losing my coverage if I lose my job, and I don't have to take a job I don't want just to get the insurance.

And of course, as I mentioned before, once the company mandates kick in next year, there is no guarantee that you will be able to keep company-provided insurance. That's another big reason why I'm keeping what I've got, not to mention that my premium is better than what I would have to pay if I went with the company's plan. My husband and step-daughter are also on my policy. What my company offered would cost a couple hundred more per month that what I'm paying on my own.

your hospital job. I worked for a hospital for 10 years. The insurance was cheap and great and it covered everything. When I got my own accounts, my husband got insurance from his job. Yep, $600+ a month. Not great coverage. That's just the way things are these days. You aren't going to find decent affordable insurance from a non-hospital company.

Nuance also took over a hospital where I used to work and several of my friends still worked. They all tried to get jobs in the hospital (non-MT jobs) so they could keep their hospital benefits. Is that an option for you?

Yeah, it sucks to have to go in and work after years of working at home, but you do what you have to do.
Re: Your last sentence SM - Lou

I for one would lie, steal or kill (well, not really...LOL) for a chance at an in-house hospital or private job doing just about ANYTHING to get away from these monstrous MTSOs.
$600 for both of you? That's a bargain! - alicia
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm paying $1400/month. In March, we'll be enrolled in one of the plans through the "exchange" and will be paying much less than that.
$1400 a month is a total rip-off. How can you - afford that on MT wages working for..
[ In Reply To ..]
an MTSO?? I no longer work for a hospital or an MTSO & my insurance is WAY, way cheaper than $600 & definitely $1400. The average MT working for a company is lucky to bring home $1800 per month & if they are paying $600 or more in insurance how the heck are they paying their bills, rent or mortgage??

That makes no sense. Also, I agree with the person that said MModal has good insurance - They do. When our department was outsourced to MM the insurance was pretty good. I paid around $60 or $70 a pay-period for me, spouse, and son.
How many MTs working for a national MTSO SM - FastFingers

LOL. Many, many FT home MTs - do not even make $1400/mo.

It appears that the poster needs to have affordable insurance IN ADDITION to a paycheck, so I don't understand your post.

You advised her/him to just take the job, THEN look for insurance or look for another job. Huh??

MTSO - old MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm sorry to hear that your department is gone.

The reality is that MTSO life is vastly different than hospital department life. Employee status is almost unheard of. Honestly, you would have to scour to find every small local company in all the small markets, and then hope for the best. I haven't heard of any company offering employee status for quite a while.

Good luck with your job hunting.

TransTech..all VR, 1500 lines and no work, then no insurance. - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
TransTech always has an ad here for Oncology Radiology..wonder why...funny how radiology I was told was obsolete as in-house radiology departments were the first to go over to VR. Then you have no work, so no lines, so no full time status, and only full timers are eligible for any small benefits. No overtime, so get your 1500 in only 8 hours however you can. Work the holidays also, but if no work, you have to still get your minimum line count for your full-time status, again for eligibility. Employee status is at Nuance, M-Modal, and Keystrokes...be prepared to work 24/7 and maybe make minimum wage. But, hope you do not get an account that nobody else wants, or be assigned 5 accounts with all different account specifics so they have leverage to scrutinize your work if need be. And don't complain, especially on this board...they check it.

They can check ALL THEY WANT - Ex TTer

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked for them a few years back, first as FT. Yes, lines were difficult to get, often no work & the account "leads" got first dibs on any halfway decent jobs in your queue, grabbing them up before you could get to them. Furthermore, they were very vicious if you complained about anything .. i.e., horrible dictation being dealt to you constantly, etc.

Since I couldn't consistently get all my lines in, even doing 10-11 hours' work for an 8-hour shift, I was first "asked" for go PT, then forced to when they made me constantly NJA, thus taking my insurance away from my family.
Right about then they started nitpicking virtually everything .. I finally threw in the towel. So sue me!
Hmm, interesting as the "leads" don't type! Ha! - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
!!
LOL - I know for a fact that - they do
[ In Reply To ..]
They DO type, only they have the option to do or reject any job they don't want, which we do NOT. Thus the cherry-picking. Also, the "lead of leads/acct. mgr" is also the sister of the Director of Operations.
why would a lead transcriptionist - not transcribe?
[ In Reply To ..]
and why would they nab those jobs if they don't transcribe? What are they going to do with them?
TT leads - TK
[ In Reply To ..]
As a former lead in my previous life, here are the facts. Leads do NOT type during the time they are monitoring accounts. They get paid hourly during that time. If they were to type, they would be reprimanded, as that would be considered "double dipping." When they are not doing lead duties, they are typing as any other MT and are NEVER allowed to cherry-pick. Their supervisor is monitoring the account and they are just trying to get lines like everyone else.

TransTech Radiology - Darkhorse

[ In Reply To ..]
You haven't the vaguest idea what you are talking about. I type Radiology and there is PLENTY work...some straight typing but most VR. Also you get paid by the line but the insurance is based on the amount of REPORTS, not lines for the Radiology accounts. Stop spreading false information.

You should be eligible for COBRA with your previous employer. It might be pricey but at least you would not be uninsured, I think you can do that for 90 days. I'm a little confused; you declined a job that at least offered some insurance in favor of unemployment and no insurance? It has never happened to me, but I've been told that being unemployed makes it even more difficult to find another job. I agree with the suggestion of going to work for Nuance and continuing to look, it may even be a good fit for you. Also, as someone else said, you are a free agent when it comes to health insurance, shop around for the best deal. Last but not least, I would suggest expanding your job search to something outside of the MT field, I think you will see that across the board, the pay and benefits will be about the same wherever you land if you continue as an MT. Also, jobs are not as plentiful as they once were. Good luck.
