thinking of applying to Synernet - need a change

Posted: Dec 25, 2014

I have a couple questions before I apply.  Do they pay extra for working holidays and are the holidays company paid? Are there a lot of ESL?

Thank you and Merry Christmas

Whatever you do, do NOT apply there!! I worked there for - sm

for a few months and things were great at first, but then things went way downhill when VR came along. They treat you like crap, too, after the "honeymoon" phase. I have several friends who worked there and had the same problems.

Synernet, VR - rhea

[ In Reply To ..]
It seems to be a funny thing with these companies that about the time VR hits the door worse treatment starts. It used to be over a year ago when Synernet was mentioned on here it was mostly all good and MTs liked the company, except the pay was somewhat low. Then, of course, VR hits and now mostly all you hear is just negative. I had this happen when I worked for MD-IT. I had worked there for years and then when VR started to be talked about things just got worse and worse and even my friend was let go.

Holiday pay comes out of your PTO. - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
They do have generous PTO though. ESL depends on what pool of accounts you're given. Mine have a lot, but others might not. Just realize they have 6 hours of mandatory OT a week right now until further notice.

Merry Christmas to you too.

Is this legal? - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
This does not sound legal to me to take out of your PTO time. They are supposed to be paying OT, not taking away from your paid vacation and sick days.

Unbelievable.

It is perfectly legal, unfortunately. If you look at the labor board laws... - sad but true

[ In Reply To ..]
They do not have to pay any extra pay for working nights, weekends OR holiday pay. Believe me, when I started working for a company who seemed to push the limits, I started educating myself on labor laws.

They may roll the holiday pay into the PTO. - see msg.

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked for a place like that, so when the holiday came along it was taken out of the PTO.

Yes, that's how they do it. it comes out of YOUR own PTO bank. - another way to screw the MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, IF you chose to activate whatever holiday you are scheduled to work it comes out of your personal time. This company sucks on so many levels.
I meant not scheduled to work.... - another way to screw the MT
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are getting a "paid" holiday, you have to activate the time using your own accumulated PTO.

Oh honey, no! What the above poster said is true. It's a sweat shop - Unfortunate one

[ In Reply To ..]
Heed what the above poster said. This company really does not care. Six hours of mandatory overtime all summer, got a brief reprieve in October and part of November and how back into 6 hours of MOT on top of them "asking" for 4 more for a lousy 50 dollars extra of you do 10 hours of OT. If you send anything to QA, then you get reprimanded by how you didn't look up old reports, and you might have to search for 10 minutes finding one that pertains to a report you are doing, sometimes QA is nice and other times snippy. You never know what they will be. I could write a book but for the love of Pete look for a different company! We are all exhausted, didn't get to spent much time with our families during the holidays and I sure had no time to even cook a dinner.

My take on Synernet - oldladymt

[ In Reply To ..]
Youâre going to hear a lot of negative stuff about Synernet on this board. Apparently, they were lucky enough to hire the most pleasant MTs who regularly post their emotional vomit about the company here, nearly every day. I work for Synernet, and there are definitely some things that could improve with this company, but not everything is terrible. Itâs up to you to decide whether itâs a good fit for you.

Staff - The "official corporate" people who work in-house seem to be nice enough and apologetic about things like forced overtime and turnover, but it's business is business. Not a lot of warm fuzzy with any of the staff, but professionally pleasant. This is actually how it should be. Iâve heard some horror stories about some of the people on staff here on this board though. Although Iâm sure no one on this particular board would ever exaggerate anything, they do seem to give some of these people a bad rap. I think witch, devil, demon woman, etc., come to mind from what I remember of the postings. I canât vouch for this. Apparently, I havenât done anything yet to warrant being pitchforked.

Team Leads - Team leads are either/or. Some of them are very empathetic and understanding, and they try to help you understand what is going on. There are others that are just completely clueless regarding quality, technical aspects of working with the software, anyoneâs schedule (at all), company policy, etc. Like others here on the board, I agree that they probably cherry pick much of the work as their own compensation for doing the team lead work. You can easily see that the team leads pull the best work for themselves. This is problematic because, for one, It isnât really leading. You canât lead others in a difficult account if you arenât in it with them. Secondly, it takes away an important balance for all MTs who should receive a balance of work. Thirdly, itâs obvious. And your people know youâre doing it. And so they come to boards like this and say so. And that hinders your hiring effort for honest, good MTs. So stop it already, right?

Quality of Dictation - The most difficult dictators are weighted, which means you receive a bump in your line count for doing them. These are quite few and far between, in my opinion, and there could be more added to this list. But if you have a heavy night of bad dictators, it can genuinely help. I donât personally care about this kind of stuff because the work in general at Synernet is super frickin easy if youâve been doing acute care transcription for any length of time (more than 5 years). Most of the dictators are up in Maine, and sure, there are some ESL, but it is nothing compared to physicians who are stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, or Miami Childrenâs Hospital or some teaching hospital out in southern California that you might get with some of the other, bigger MTSOs. The Dolbey Fusion digital equipment and software is pretty good, and thatâs what youâll be working with. Theyâre hiring for their newer account, which is a hospital in the Midwest, and the dictators are pretty easy, except for one or two, but the work is mostly OP notes. So if youâre into that, great. If not, you wonât like it. Synernet is definitely getting the work from the hospital that the internal or bigger service doesnât want to handle. But again, if you have the right experience, it is going to be a good account.

Line count/pay â The pay is lower than Iâm used to, but good grief, every service out there is cutting the bar so low itâs ridiculous. The thing about Synernet that Iâve found is that the lines seem to add up moreso than Iâm used to. I worked Dolbey Fusion for years, and, for example, letâs say I worked my little fingers to the bone, and I do 2000 lines in a night (straight transcription, no VR). With Synernet, I would work my fingers to the bone, and I could do 2700 or 3000 (straight transcription). Iâm not sure if thatâs headers, footers, if it applies to every account, or what. Iâve been doing this for so long, I know Iâm not getting faster. But, for some reason, it is more for me. And Iâm not the only one who says that. Sometimes, Iâll see a post here about someone saying âHave you noticed your line count going down? I think Synernet is cheating us,â or something. Well, I havenât noticed any change. Itâs pretty much stayed the same for me.

Incentive â The incentive is just stupid with this company. Itâs one thing I really do not like. Iâm not going to post the figures here, but they make the top tier virtually unattainable. They really need to work on this. I can usually get one of the tiers of the incentive, but not usually the top tier. Itâs on a per hour basis. So a bad half-day can really throw off your entire weekâs incentive. They need to make the incentive tiers better in compensation, and they need to make it more attainable. This would help with motivation, especially since the mandatory overtime is so de-motivating to some of the MTs.

Scheduling â This is another huge problem with Synernet. There are good things about Synernet. There really are. But the management at Synernet Does Not Know What They Are Doing With Scheduling. Let me repeat: The management Does Not Know What They Are Doing With Scheduling. Theyâre very good at counting beans, staying on top of their employees, working that little time clock system, getting their people lined up for overtime and trying to cover the accounts as best as they can. But when it comes to staffing for the accounts and hiring the right number of people, the timing, etc. â itâs not good. You just canât keep your people in mandatory overtime all year while allowing your people to take so much time off, and then throw in a massive employee turnover rate (itâs par for the course in this business, which theyâre learning now that theyâre trying to be a ânationalâ company) with a teeny weeny guaranteed turnaround time of 2-6 hours for their reports. These people lose their minds when we go out of TAT for even 2 hours. They will call you. They will remind you of your obligations. They will offer little incentives and little bonuses, and you will receive 1000 emails about how you should work overtime. Please, please, please. Theyâll do everything but do their hiring and staffing the right way. Most of their accounts are overflow from in-house work, and itâs just difficult to regulate and plan for this. Hell, itâs difficult to plan and regulate this kind of thing in-house with your own doctors that youâve been working with for 18 years, much less getting overflow work. How do companies do it? Answer â They donât do it well. No one does. Itâs a pain in the butt. Itâs the industry and every company and MT out there suffers from it. This is why we need true per diems that work from company to company that can just float in and out of a pool like nurses who are per diem. This is why hospitals have per diem nursing, and why they are paid really, really well. These MTSOs can figure this out. One day. Maybe.
Voice Recognition â There is VR work at Synernet. You have to do it. I have heard a lot of moaning and groaning about this on the boards here, but Iâve worked every account Synernet has, in different and varying types of schedules, and my actual VR amount is always quite minimal. And no, I donât cherry pick. I donât have that ability. Iâm not a team lead or in management. I donât like it when it rolls into my queue, but I do it quickly and get it out of the way. When I say minimal, I mean, like, if I did 12,000 lines, maybe 700 of those lines would be VR. Itâs not enough to go see your therapist for. Get over it, people. Itâs the way things are. Learn it, get good at it, and do some deep breathing. The sooner you figure this out and are able to do this without losing your mind, youâre gonna be just fine. I do think it should be compensated better, but I said that already with Synernet.

Shift Differential â I heard someone post here in some other thread that Synernet doesnât have to pay shift differential. They do. Iâm not sure where that was coming from. Maybe they donât have to, but my paycheck says that they do. Itâs right there⦠âshift differentialâ¦.â It isnât much, but itâs exactly the same differential I was paid when I worked in-house for a hospital that paid me well. (And free health care benefits⦠oh, those were the days⦠sighâ¦)

Flexibility â This perhaps is the biggest disappointment Iâve had so far with Synernet. I actually like the management. They seem to be okay. They arenât going to hold your hand, sugar-pie, but they are actually pretty professional (the management, not the team-leads). Nice folks, who seem to understand that the situation is not ideal with the mandatory overtime and all the mess of constantly adding new accounts and the fluctuations with staffing (they are always apologizing⦠always). But there is absolutely no flexibility. If you want a day off that you did not request a year in advance (which means during your first year, forget it, toots) you probably wonât get it. I have never been with a company who was this way. The whole point of working from home is to have some kind of flexibility and spend time with your family. I have asked many times for a day or a certain time, or to even come in an hour late or leave an hour early (ahead of the day I asked for!) and the answer was, âIâm sorry, no.â I have not been able to make plans for the holiday because I had to work mandatory holiday because I was on a team, and then get up to the holiday, and thereâs no work. And then call in and say, âHey, thereâs no work⦠can I go ahead and go do family stuff?â and they say, âIâm sorry, no. You have to check back every hour.â Iâm not even kidding. This has to be a reaction to the problem of Not Knowing What They Are Doing With Scheduling. There is no flexibility. So⦠if you really, really, really like consistency and want to be in a regular schedule that Shall Never Change, then Synernet might be really good for you.

QA â Itâs touch and go. There are some QA who know their stuff. The problem is, some of the team leads try to do QA, and this can be something of a disaster when they donât know the accounts or donât have the right experience(remember, a lot of the team leads can draw their own dictators). They give real-time feedback, so if you send a report in with a blank, theyâre going to send their feedback back to you with a copy to the entire QA staff which includes all of the team leads. Lovely, right? But, honestly, I have had much worse experiences with other companies. It could be worse. They are not INCREDIBLY picky. QA at other companies can be very picky. They can also be incompetent. Synernet is middle of the road, in my book. The biggest problem is that you canât listen to the dictation afterwards because you donât have those abilities. So, you just have to take their word for it. I hate that, especially when you can lose your incentive because of it.

Overall, I get the feeling that Synernet is a good company. They have good people up there in Maine, and they want to do the right thing. Transcription is only a division of this company. They have like⦠per diem staff that works in hospitals, and they do some kind of independent background checking, and they have technicians that work on hospital equipment, and they do all kinds of different things. So it doesnât surprise me that their home-grown transcription management team is going through what seems to be a rather long learning curve as far as how to handle bigger clients and a bigger MT staff (half of which apparently come here to gripe and complain, and who probably arenât consistent themselves in the kind of line count they produce, as some kind of weird self-sabotaging retaliation for conditions they apparently donât like â like having to work 8 whole hours a day in one spot, typing VR work, and other unmentionables). They seem to be professional and are willing to work out most things, but theyâre also pretty inflexible, and the incentive tier and pay could be better.

So yeah, that is my take. I typed a lot, but hell, Iâm an MT. I did this in like 10 minutes, tops while drinking coffee, yelling at my kids, and I even took a break to clean up a mess the dog made â while wearing my nightclothes in the middle of the morning. God, itâs good to be me.

Now I know where the "nice" accounts went. - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
You obviously are not in my pool. Not all the ESLs have their lines padded either. I get a lot of VR with ESL and have to change most of it. You assume way too much and know nothing about other peoples' experiences there. Lucky you. You are a fabulous MT.

Yeah, that makes no sense. - oldladymt

[ In Reply To ..]
Ahh yes... the haters are gonna hate hate hate. For no... apparent... reason. lol.

To reiterate:

I've worked on nearly every account at Synernet with the exception of Radiology stuff. So, yeah. I don't know what account pool you're in that is ALL ESL and VR. But if I had to type ESL and VR all day, I'd be trying to get in a different pool or looking for another job. I just looked over the different pools, too. And I have worked in all of these accounts. I'm puzzled as to which one you're in that is all ESL and all VR.

I didn't say all the ESL doctors were padded. In fact, a number of the padded doctors who have their counts weighted are American. They just dictate like crap - way too fast and unintelligible. There are plenty of ESL that are excellent dictators. Their lines aren't padded for obvious reasons. Additionally, I did say that they could definitely expand that list of padded doctors, and it would help.

I actually do know about other peoples' experience with Synernet. I know several people who work for them now and who have worked for them in the past. So... your statement that I don't know about anyone else's experience isn't true. Having said that, I didn't give my review on Synernet based on anyone's experience except for my own. I said that pretty clearly as well.

For the record, when I do get the VR, it really isn't bad. But there are some of the doctors that are just horrible, yes, and you do have to change everything. That is pretty rare though. There are some of those guys that speak it word for word nearly, and you can speed that sucker up to chipmunk speed, and it's awesome. That's the norm more than the other. Again, I can't imagine which account pool you're in that has you doing that all the time. Trust me, there is no favoritism here. I promise you, I get thrown whatever whenever as well. I have no contacts in management on any kind of friendship basis. And I have no idea what is in the queue or what the work load is. I just go where they say go, and when.

If that is really happening to you, then my post should have been helpful to you, so that you know there can be a better work pool to get into. Talk to your manager and ask to be switched. The new account at the moment has no VR whatsoever, if you have the skill to do OP notes. Ask them. It can't hurt. If it doesn't work, go somewhere else. ESL and VR all day - that would really be terrible.

Oh, thank you, the last 2 paragraphs of your - MT

No company HAS to pay a differential for 2nd or 3rd shift. Look up your labor laws. Most places do it to attract people to a less desirable shift.

I don't know whether they HAVE to or not. I'm just saying they definitely do.

Unless you work third shift, you do NOT get a shift differential, unless you are - Synernet no more

[ In Reply To ..]
very special, which it seems you are, if only in your own mind. I work 2nd shift and receive no differential at all.

I also do not agree with you regarding the VR. The platform is HORRIBLE. I am told that part of it is to blame for the MTs not being consistent and so the program does not learn, and that may very well be true, but as it stands, it does not follow the account specifics as in it does not list things that are supposed to listed, capitalize things that should be capitalized (or capitalizes things that should not be capitalized), etc. I have worked on several speech recognition platforms, and this is by the worst. The straight typing aspect is fine, but they really messed up on the speech side. And if you are "lucky" enough to do the H account, it is about 95% VR, also horrible, but at least they pay you hourly when you have to suffer and work on that nasty account.

Synernet is not the worst company out there, but I'm not putting on my pom poms either. Communication is horrible. And even though you can make a decent wage despite their low wages, think how much more it would be if they paid a decent wage.

I could go on and on, like you did, but this is enough to say that I disagree with you. I gave my two weeks' notice last Monday and it was the best Christmas present I have ever given myself. We spent at least 1/3 of our lives working, so it should not be something that makes you miserable, which in my case, it was. I dreaded punching in, and the 8 hours there (plus the mandatory OT), all felt like I was serving out a prison sentence.

You are leaving? More work for me. nm - MT

I would rather work for a company that pays me well and does not suck the soul out of me, and fortunately I have found that. But that, of course, is a personal preference. Glad you are happy -- you're welcome to all of the work I had, especially on that nasty H account.

To oldladymt - Fabulous post

I left Synernet (and all MT) a while ago because...finally...I just couldn't stand MT another minute. The MOT just about killed me; no matter what the incentive was, I could only sit for so many hours and then there were diminishing returns. I'll admit now that I kept a hammer and heavy book on my desk, and when I burned out (daily), I would balance the head of the hammer on a single keyboard letter (so it would keep repeating) and the book on the footpedal and take a walk. I don't know whether they figured it out; I was too desperate to care.

In all respects, my experience and "take" were identical to yours. The only difference is this: I disagree that you "can't listen to dictation afterwards." I found a way to do it, and it wasn't rocket science. I would tell you how, but...honestly...once I left MT I promptly forgot all about Dolbey Fusion and all other platforms and filled my brain space with other stuff. I just played around on the system one day and discovered how. There were times I simply couldn't believe that I had made an error they said I did, and boy was my face red when I saw (heard) they were right most of the time. Live and learn, I guess, and try not to be so defensive.

Overall, I made a decent living there pre-VR. I never made any serious effort to do VR well; by that time, I just didn't care anymore. The cherry-picking by leads was a sore point with me (and believe me, I monitored it very carefully and knew who was doing it -- not that it made any difference). I complained once and learned it was best to keep silent.

I've left MT, as I said, but I still visit this site daily, and I always read those posts about my former employers. I don't know why it's so compelling; perhaps it makes me feel vindicated, or maybe I'm just relieved to have escaped such overwhelming pressure. My poor body just gave out. Oh...and also I was assigned a pool of accounts that just bored me to death (I had been taken off some really great, familiar accounts with no explanation and was sort of burned by that).

I found your post entertaining and comprehensive. I would say that my experience was largely positive, but I was glad to say goodbye, and I have no regrets about moving on. I dusted off my desk and vacuumed the carpet, hoping to eliminate the sweatshop smell. I then closed the door and haven't opened it since.

Well... I have to search harder now! - oldladymt

[ In Reply To ..]
That's all the prompting I need to get on the Dolbey forums and figure out how to get that voice file.

And yes, I hate it when they're right, too. I think that will always be the case as long as any of us are doing transcription, even after 25 years of experience (ahem).

I'm glad you're happy now. I'm doing okay so far, and I guess when I'm done, I'll probably end up working somewhere locally. But for now, I'm sticking with it.
To oldladymt again - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah, 25 years here too. One day I just said, "NO MORE. I DON'T CARE WHAT IT COSTS ME, I WON'T/CAN'T DO THIS A-N-Y-M-O-R-E." Of course, I worked out my notice (don't know how I got the strength), had a good long cry so I could grieve properly, and then got another (different) job. My burnout was so sudden and serious that I... well honestly, I felt that my health was at stake. Leaving MT was not so much a choice as a necessity.

I don't blame you for sticking with it. I've made some budgetary -- and other -- sacrifices because of my impulsive and irreversible decision here, but I'm becoming a kinder, gentler person now. Life is indeed good. :)

I know I've read somewhere on the board about this company but can't remember where.  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.  I'm looking for steady PT evening work Sun thru Thurs (3-4 hours nightly).  More than experienced with over 25 years in the biz, university/acute care accounts, except radiology.  Thanks. ...

Burned Out On Job Applying, Testing Etc.
May 10, 2010

Are there NO decent places out there to work? Just when I see something that looks like what I am seeking and want to apply, all I see is negative posts.  I realize that everyone has their opinion and just because someone does not like it does not mean I would not etc. BUT, there are always more than one negative opinion, and all cases that I chose to ignore warnings, I walked right into the nightmare, just like they said I would. Seriously, is ANYONE happy where they work? Please tel ...

Does anyone know if Medquist hires for part-time, are there are any benefits for part-timers, and what are the schedules like? Do I get to set my schedule or do they? Any info is appreciated. To People Applying/looking For Jobs
Jun 20, 2011

I applied for one of the jobs listed on here and another site.  I got a call saying they would call last Friday.  When that didn't happen, I got an email saying they would call today in a certain time frame.  That still has not happened.  I know patience is a virtue and that they are dealing with multiple resumes, but I had an email from a recruiter in the specialty area that I was looking at, so I was hoping the number of resumes had dropped some (not just a general rec ...

Thought About Applying To TransTech
Nov 21, 2011

I have thought about applying to TransTech.  Then I noted on their website the MTTest Site that lots of seasoned MTs have taken, myself being one of them and I have over 32 years acute-care experience and failed.   Any opinions on taking it once again?  Need a job like lots of MTs and I love to do OP reports.  For any TransTech MTs, do they have any straight typing or is it straight and or VR editing?   ...

Applying For Unemployment Is Stresful
Mar 01, 2012

There's a guilt factor - well, I SHOULD stick it out.  I SHOULD make it work, I SHOULD be able to buckle down and eat whatever crap for whatever pay.  I should, I should, I should, and it's off to work I go... I think being an MT these days has a lot in common with a domestic violence situation:  No matter how bad things are, it's always the wife's - I mean - the MTs fault.  It's not the voice recognition software, it's YOU.  It's not ...
