Thinking of applying at Synernet. How often do they... - looking

Posted: May 15, 2014

I see they adverstise quite often and I don't mind working 2nd or 3rd shift.  I just had a few questions first before I apply.

1.  How often do they give raises?

2.  How good is the insurance, meaning, is there a very high deductible?

3.  Do they leave you alone as long as you are doing your job?

4.  Is there room for advancement?

5.  Do they contribute to retirement?

Thank you all in advance!

LOL @ "How often do they give raises?" - Jenny

[ In Reply To ..]
The answer to that would be never. They only pay 7 cpl, but they are in the process of moving to VR, which obviously pays even less. Lots of micromanagement that goes on there and very disorganized. They are not a good company at all. Yes, I work there and am trying to get out.

ditto what Jenny said. they treat us like - dontwanna

[ In Reply To ..]
A sweat shop. Crappy pay and no you NEVER get a raise! If you can do 275 lines an hour straight typing you can get an incentive but I have never been able to with having to learn different accounts. I would look elsewhere. Oh and now we have to do even more overtime hours! I am exhausted!

honest - answers

[ In Reply To ..]
1. They don't give raises that I know of, but 3rd shift has a differential.

2. I am out of state. I think the deductible is $2000. Monthly premiums are, I think are $60 per PP (a little over $100/month).

3. They never ever bother me. My QAs are consistently over what they require (98%), I rarely send anything to QA. BOS is strictly followed. If you know your BOS and show up to work every day they will not bother you.

4. Not sure. I think they hire within for supervisory, lead, QA positions, but not sure how often these positions are empty or available.

5. I'm pretty sure they contribute up to 3% in 401K, but not 100% sure about that.

Vacation is very generous. I think it's something like the equivalent of 5 to 6 weeks, but you have to use your earned time for sick days, 4 holidays (required and named by the company at the start of your employment), as well as your regular 2 weeks of vacation. However, you can cash in unused hours.

oh... and mandatory OT occurs more often than not. Some like it. Some don't. They tell you up front, so no surprises there. And they do pay real time and a half.

Hope this helps!!

upbeat and happy does not mean they are dishonest. I am not happy there either. Are you the poster that keeps saying this place is awesome???

I don't know what you're talking about. Someone asked questions. I was just - answering

[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't say anyone was dishonest, nor did I imply same. I have no idea who you're talking about.
Actually your statement of some honest answers - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
most definitely implies the other answers are not...honest that is.
Mine was the 3rd reply posted. I didn't read the other posts. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I was not implying anything. I just meant that I was going to take the question seriously and give honest answers. Sorry if anyone misunderstood that.
Sigh. I give up. You just want to argue and you are - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
purposely misunderstanding. You win. I give up. I have a LOT of work to do!!!
I am not arguing. My post is being challenged on ONE word not the fact that ANY - information
[ In Reply To ..]
I provided was untrue. That speaks volumes to those (maybe 3 out of over 100 employees of Synernet--or probably former employees) who apparently had a bad experience and now insist on bashing the company and discouraging MTs who might otherwise find a good home with Synernet.

I didn't say the company was perfect. I answered questions with factual information.

I didn't start any argument. I was accused of implying something that my post did not bear out. Now.. WHO started the argument?

Honestly if they offered more pay, they would have - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
more happy MTs. I for one am not happy and have not been for a while.

The mandatory overtime requirement is temendous - M

[ In Reply To ..]
First 4 a week required, now 6 with a hint of 10 per week extra on the horizon. Looking toward almost required to work 7 days a week. And it will come to pass with the required VR which is implementing now. With the low production rate of VR many more hours will have to be put on the clock b/c of accounts falling behind. And if you want to be micromanaged every second on your schedule go for it. Just saying.

They told me about mandatory OT when I was hired. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If I had a problem with that I would not have taken the job. I don't get why MTs who knew this was the case and didn't want to do OT would accept a job for them.

I have never experienced any kind of micromanaging. Not even sure what that means. I don't even think they know who I am. The only communication I've received is what is sent out to everyone plus my regular QA reports. Or if they need a stat job I'm working on.

I haven't done VR yet, not looking forward to that, but every company I applied to when I accepted a job at Synrenet was doing VR, paid less for VR, and their straight typing paid less as well or similar. Plus their benefits were far inferior. I rarely run out of work as I did with my previous employer. OT is refreshing compared to babysitting a monitor and then worry about paying the bills. I work as much as I want now.

Nothing is perfect, but I don't experience any of the alleged micromanaging.
Well good for you - nm

I, too, was told about OT when I was hired - SM - Tired
[ In Reply To ..]
However, I was told that it was "occasional." I was not told that it would be EVERY SINGLE WEEK during the spring and summer months. I am absolutely fine with doing occasional OT; however, I DO have a family and friends and a life outside of work and I refuse to constantly be forced to put in all these extra hours almost every single week just because they make their clients all of these ridiculous, unrealistic promises regarding turnaround time that they know they can't keep because they don't have adequate staffing. Why should the MTs always have to suffer because of their screw ups??? I currently am sending out resumes.
I guess they should pick up some overseas MTs then? I was told to expect OT - every week
[ In Reply To ..]
maybe you should try to pick up a part-time somewhere.

An hour a day is what a lot of people spend dressing and commuting... my friends do this. So I have plenty of time for my family and social life as we all work for a living.
With the pay rates as low as they are getting... They are treating us like overseas MTs - gettingout
[ In Reply To ..]
Going from 7 cents per line typing and then 4 cents per line editing is a slap in the face. We are all starting to be treated like the overseas MTs. So, yeah, they may as well bring them into the mix, too.

I am currently enrolled in school and cannot wait to finally rid myself of transcription after 10 long years! I feel for those who have been in it over 20 and 30 years to have to stoop to being paid so horribly with experience! Heaven help us all!
I was told the same thing...occasional and not - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
and not constant. I am tired of it.
Yes, I was too, BUT - farmergirl
[ In Reply To ..]
I was not told that it would be taking up what free time I had outside of work to spend with my family. Hey, I like overtime, but I don't want to have work on my days off, and it's getting to the point where I have to use hours on my days off to complete the mandatory overtime. They never said they were going to work us to death with overtime.

I was thinking of applying too - but

[ In Reply To ..]
...their ads have changed substantially over the last month. It looks now like you're not eligible for any benefits whatsoever until a 6-month trial period, after which they may, or may not, offer you a permanent job. Sounds like they want to weed out less proficient MTs, and I understand that, but if I commit to a company, I want the same committment from them. Just sayin'.

bashing - SMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe if people would quick bashing the company we could get some new hires and wouldn't have all this MOT. If we don't get the TAT under control the clients are going to move on to someone who will and then we will all be out of a job.

It's not bashing; it's simply the truth - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't see any bashing. I see people sharing their experiences and opinions. I also work at Synernet and have for over 3 years, so I can say what others are saying on here is 100% accurate. No one is making up lies or trying to "bash" the company. The OP asked for an honest opinion on Synernet, so that is what they are getting. I for one will not say that it's all roses and cotton candy working for them when that simply is not the case. I know that if I wanted an opinion on a company I was thinking of applying with, I would want to know how it really is, not some sugar coated response.

TAT - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
We aren't the ones who promised the impossible TAT on the accounts. They didn't have the people to do those TAT's at the time, but promised them anyway to get the business. Now they're scrambling. The place used to run like a top; now it's chaos. Too many major changes too quick and it all comes down on the back of the MT not doing enough. I don't see how we won't lose some accounts with the way things are. I understand why they did it, but how they implemented it has got me scratching my head. Now they are trying to hire temp-to-hire MTs; 6 months without knowing if you have a job or not. What good MT is going to leave their present company for that? I don't see planned operation anymore; I see trying to patch up holes in poor planning after the fact. Just my observation. I too would want the truth on this forum of what a company is like to work for. Synernet is a good company that I think is going through some growing pains right now. It's going to get rougher before it gets better. Now with VR training. Lowering pay for that. Pushing to get the production they expect with VR. Injury to hands with VR (which I have experienced before). I see a lot of stress coming up. I will do the very best I can; that's all I can do. I don't owe them 24/7 though.
in my experience in seeing all the changes.... - beenthere
[ In Reply To ..]
When there were other business aspects of a company and one area, such as transcription, and it started being chaotic and disorganized, that part was either sold to a bigger company or it was shut down altogether eventually. Yes, customers will move their accounts somewhere else if they are not getting their needs met. But you cant expect your MTs to give up their days off to get caught up on backlog. The more OT that is loaded on them the more apt to mistakes being made. They need to up the pay if they want more new hires.

I think "honest answers" below gave you good information. sm - JMO

[ In Reply To ..]
I am not a company cheerleader or anything, and the "gripes" others have listed are valid ones, but I am reasonably happy and content at Synernet. The pay could be better, and even though line counts come relatively easy, I have never been able to make it to the tiers for incentives. And with the advent of VR, no doubt my pay will go down, which I am not happy about. Still, they have excellent time off benefits and the insurance payment is low, and I have not found any better deals with any other companies, so I plan to stay. I already work 2 other jobs to make ends meet, so the increasing amounts of OT demanded are a bit of a strain, but I would rather have the OT than the NJA situation I had when I first started here. No company is ideal anymore. I guess you just decide which poison is least toxic to you.

Yeah insurance payment is low..but the deductible is high - cantgetsick

[ In Reply To ..]
I have chronic pain and when my doctor put in for me to have the pharmacy compound a topical medication, the insurance doesn't even cover it. Not to mention the high deductible. Just pray you don't ever get sick.

Well, I pray i don't get sick anyway, but I understand. However, sm - JMO

[ In Reply To ..]
before I started with Synernet, I had a $5000 deductible and was paying over $300 a month, so this still helps me. I only take one medication, which is $50 with the insurance, would be $90 without, so that saves me a little. I don't know much about compounding meds, but I'm sorry the insurance didn't help you. As I said before, I'm not a cheerleader for the company, but I honestly do not know of any better companies out there. Used to be you could make some pretty nice money with MT and have decent benefits, but nowadays I just watch everything go downhill. My friends cry because they haven't gotten a raise in awhile. I just say cry me a river -- try getting a progressive cut over the years. I have gone from 11-1/2 cpl to 7 cpl, yet my cost of living has not trended down in the same manner. Sad.

Applying For Job

Okay, this is somewhat of a strange situation.  I have been looking for a job in the field that I was in prior to becoming an MT 11 years ago, which would be a full-time position with benefits.  Currently I am IC.  I had lost my previous job due to downsizing and the office/company that I worked for basically closed it's Wisconsin branch except for a handful of employees.  I just found out that one of the employees at this small Wisconsin branch of the company that I use ...
