Im CURIOUS! Wonder what a company from India is looking for when the advertise to the US MT workforce and they are wanting editors, etc? Has anyone worked for one? Im so curious as to what their quality of transcription work would be like, it would be worth it to just take a day and blow it making no money to just see what the other side looks and smells like! Im really sick of the whole offshoring side of this business. Im tired of not being able to pay my bills, etc. I wish there were a legal avenue that we could take to FORCE hospitals, doctors, etc NOT TO SHIP OUR MEDICAL RECORDS OUT OF THE US!

Im not kidding anyone. I know there are bad transcriptionists everywhere in the world, as are there bad doctors, lawyers and teachers, etc. I simply wondered if anyone had ever worked for a company in India or anywhere else for that matter. They post for jobs over here all the time. Does anyone EVER take one? If not, then why do they keep posting and looking for ways to get us to clean up the work? They need our "Americanisms" and natural understanding of the language in order to decipher things that the girls overseas dont "get"..... Im just curious is all. Not trying to start anything.

twiddling their thumbs and crying after the money they lost paying for MT schooling and now not finding a job. Some would even volunteer to work for free, just to get 2 years' experience. They were fooled by false promises and misrepresentations of the job market.

I guess Indian employers pay 5-6 for straight and 2 for VR. Better than Zero, twiddling one's thumbs and forgetting what one learned.

They would be competition for the Indian MTs and turn the tables. Maybe this would be a way to get jobs back.

Just a thought, don't bark at me, maybe I understood the whole concept wrong!

OK - I'll be the first to admit that I worked for an Indian-based MTSO. I was hired to be their Director of QA- I worked for them for 1 year and I got real tired of correcting the same words day after day. I could honestly type the reports faster than I could check them - I was responsible for coming up with ways for them to remember the correct words for sound alikes as well as a training manual, and other things - the funny thing is the majority of the MTs in India at the MTSO that I worked for were people who had gone to school in India to become doctors, nurses, etc. You would think they would know what an EJECTION FRACTION is and in what type of report it belongs in.

When I worked for them, and had a discussion about the low pay I was receiving as a director and they explained that they were charging 15 cpl per gross line, paying me a low hourly rate, and paying the MTs over there 1 or 2 rupies (which at that time 1 rupie was 1/4 cpl) I got pretty ticked off. They then wanted to send me to India to train them (when they had degrees to be docs over there or nurses) in terminology and the differences in sound-alikes, etc, I said NO WAY, I refused to share the 25 years+ of knowledge that I had. Two days later I walked out the door.

After having an experience like that, when I saw the economy bottom out, I wrote to the president about it and said they need to bring the jobs back instead of sending them overseas to give him my opinion on a once lucrative field that has turned to CR**.

Heck, turn it to VR and let us edit the VR rather than sending the work over there, at least we will still have some form of a job. I am not particularly fond of VR either, but at least it means a job for a MLS here rather a job for a bad MT over there.

And to the poster who said that there is bad work onshore as well, I can agree with that.

For those of you out there who are wondering, I have held positions of an MT, MT supervisor, editor, QA analyst, lead transcriptionist as well as a Director of QA for national MTSOs as well. I have seen a lot of good and bad work from the US MTs too, but honestly none as bad as the offshore work that I was stuck with QAing.

My personal feeling is that no US medical records should go out of the country, but unfortunately I don't have the capability to change it. I would much rather have VR editing as a choice than have the work go offshore.

Was just curious really about how much MTs in India make. No wonder so much work is going over there. They can make around 5000 rupees a month, which is about $125 in U.S. dollar a month, plus line count bonuses. My employer won't admit it but all of this month the work on my account will go from 50-75 reports well within TAT to suddenly nothing and this happens between 9-9:15 p.m. Typically that volume of report would last me and the others on the account until 11 p.m. or midnight. For the last two nights I have been editing almost all reports from MTs in India. The reports go through 2 MMEs in India and then come to me. It is amazing since they are supposed to be so "good" at what they do, that just about all of the reports come through with errors in them that were not picked up by MMEs in India. I wonder how much editing the MTEs from India are actually doing. In the report was typed Cranberry Whistle as a medication when it was actually cranberry, Vistaril 25 p.o. q.4-6 h. p.r.n. in a medication list. Since the MTs from India are supposed to be much smarter than US MTs and this report went through 2 levels of editing in India, wonder how much they actually look at the report or do Google searches. What is the attraction about India, that so much of the transcription is being sent there? It seems to me that someone for whom English is a second language would not do very well in transcribing reports from the U.S. I would expect that a lot of those reports would have be heavily eited or completely re-done. As compared to the total medical transcription work of US, the portion of MT work outsourced for India is very less it seems. Some are blaming offshoring of MT work to India as a cause of cheaper pay rates for US MTs. But the fact is different. I checked out the NTS India website and was very interested about the pay they quote for an independent contractor. The values are in paise, which convert to 100 in a rupee. A rupee is 0.02 US dollars. For transcribing 30,000 to infinity lines on the day shift one would be paid 200 paise or 2 rupees, which would be 0.04 cents per line US.
