any advice on a company with good health insurance? - is there such a thing

Posted: Jul 26, 2013

I am wondering if there are any companies left that provide FT employees good health insurance?  The kind that does not make you wait months or a year to be covered for preexisting conditions.  Thank you in advance for any input on this.

why not get your own? - MTMT

If you have preexisting conditions, you might have to shop around a little bit. But if you have your own insurance, you don't have to take or turn down a job based on that criteria. And you don't have to worry about losing your insurance if you lose your job. I've had my own for years as an IC, then was an employee for awhile somewhere and what I had was actually better and less expensive than what they were offering. So I'm really glad I kept my own since I left that horrible job after a year.

Good luck in your job search and your insurance search!

I cannot get my own insurance because I am an insulin-requiring diabetic. I have tried many many times.

ACA PCIP - you may be able to get it now

Depends on your state, but many already have PCIP plans in place. The premiums vary, but the Copays and OOP are generally much better than any private insurance I have seen. See link and go on to see what your state offers.

in our income range (only one of is working) is $2400/month for "basic". This is through the state plans. Our state is not going to participate in the exchange come Oct. The reasoning is that we already have Medicaid for the poor and this basic plan for everyone else. It doesn't cover the costs of the medical care that I need. It doesn't cover my Rx either, which is $200 for 4 pills.

My husband's, for example. His sister is diabetic and probably no bigger than a size 8 or 10.

I have looked into insurance rates because I might take an IC job, but they are outrageous. How did you find one that was decent. I just need one for myself.

for an individual policy, but I became an employee at Synernet a couple of months ago and now I only pay $59.19 every 2 weeks, and it became effective only a month after I started! :-)

I got mine through Health Advocates Alliance. You have to become a member, but the membership fee is minimal ($5 when I joined) and they have different plans available. My husband and I got a major medical type plan and the premium is around $400 a month for both of us (we are both in our 50s). Their website is www.health-advocates.com.

I cannot get individual insurance due to chronic kidney disease. Anyone who knows of a company who does not have a $2500 deductible or a wait time of months to a year for coverage of preexisting conditions? Thank you.

If you can't find affordable insurance now, I hope you and your kidneys can hold on until January. The Affordable Care Act will make pre-existing conditions a non-issue.

In reference to the link posted above for the PCIP insurance ---

Right below the "welcome" paragraph, this is the "disclaimer" paragraph....

On February 16, 2013, the federally-run Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) suspended acceptance of new enrollment applications until further notice. The suspension also became effective in the state-based PCIPs on March 2. This will help ensure that funds are available through 2013 to continuously cover people currently enrolled in PCIP. PCIP will continue providing coverage to more than 100,000 people currently enrolled nationwide. We encourage you to visit http://finder.healthcare.gov Exit Disclaimer Icon to explore your other health
care options.
True about PCIP, however sm - me3

On October 1, 2013, the insurance exchanges will open in all states and you can sign up/purchase a policy at that time, with no pre-existing condition clauses, and subsidies will be available depending on income, and the effective date of the policy will be 01/01/2014.

It's still a bit of a wait, but in less than 10 weeks the ball will be rolling for this, and the policy will take effect 01/01/2014.

My Company Sent Out Health Insurance Enrollment
Nov 08, 2011

for a family plan will be in the range of $48K+ to over $50K per year. The company pays 3/4, something like $36,000+/year,  leaving me  about $1,000/per month to pay for the cheaper plan, $12k a year, for a policy with $2500 individual deductibles/$5000 per family before it even starts paying, plus copays. I wish I could get the company to pay me that $36K to go in the bank instead. If my husband had health insurance, I could go employee alone for $100/month (1/10th as much), but he ...

Health Insurance As An IC
Oct 21, 2010

I am considering becoming self employed (after a fashion) as an IC.  I have gone onto www.healthcare.gov and gone through the steps they advise when you want to take out private insurance.  Holy cow, the insurance plans offered varied in premium cost from $600 to $4000 per month for a family of 4, but the thing that got me was two items:  Maximum out of pocket for individual: 0$.  Annual deductible for individual: 0$.  Woohoo.  This just seems too good to be true.&n ...

This is my first VR job. I cannot make enough lines to qualify for health insurance on it. This is the first time I have ever had this problem.
