VBC (visible black character) - PMS

Posted: Jan 02, 2010

When did this start to happen??  By my calculations, you stand to lose 20-30% of your income.  If you have to type a space, why wouldn't you expect to be paid for it???  For me, VBC stands for "victim by choice," which I refuse to be.

I've only ran across a couple of companies like that...... - sm

I think it's ridiculous as well. A lady to me in an interview that they only paid for VBC and even went on to say they only paid for letters we actually "typed". I told her I actually DID have to hit the spacebar to get that space in there and that my computer does not automatically put that in there. I actually didn't get the job.

What I think we should do is when a company says they don't pay for spaces, just go ahead and take their test anyway, even if we DON'T want the job and we should do the entire typing portion of the test with NO spaces whatsoever, lol. We should show them what a document looks like if they choose to only pay for PART of that document. That would be pretty funny:)

It seems to me that............ - PMS

"THEY"keep taking away little by little. Unfortunately, I was not aware of the how the company paid until after I tested and was offered the job, which of course, I turned down but loved your idea.

The recruiter explained to me that this is why they pay more than other companies but after calculating their little compensation package, it worked out to be 6 cpl.

Here's one for you..
I worked "shortly" for a company who insisted that I type two spaces after each period and I complied.

Apparently, this made it "easier" for QA to proof. As it turned out, after it was proofed, the two spaces after each period magically became one, in which I was paid for. Needless to say, when I found out this was going on, not only did I quit but I filed a complaint with the BBB in that state and six weeks later, I received a check for the spaces I was not paid for.

The pay rate in this industry has been the same for the last 10 years and has even decreased. Now, they want to take more, whats up with that?

It also bothers me that an "IC" has to work set hours and days of the week, which to me, sounds more like an employee" without the benefits.

Maybe we all just need to stand up for our chosen profession as MTs and stop being walked on by the MTSO out there who I venture to say are making a profit off each and every one of us.

I am lucky enough to have my own private accounts although I am looking to supplement that but under no circumstances will I sell myself short. When I provide a service, I expect to get paid for it, just like anyone else.

Amen PMS - not welcome on my forehead

I won't do the not-paid-for-spaces thing, nor will I comply with only one space between sentences.

I also do my own line count to make sure things are not being changed after I send them up.

You are my new hero! (sm) - Long time MT

I have a couple of friends who are only paid for the VBC. It's just insane, isn't it? I would love to be able to test for such a company and leave the spaces out. I mean, what can they complain about? They aren't paying for the spaces. Just another underhanded way for MTSOs to screw the MT.

"chuckle" never thought of that one, I agree!!! - .

Always ask questions prior to resume, testing, interview time etc. via email

Just make it generic - what is the lowest to highest rate offered for "your MT position" (not I have such and such years exp.) Are spaces paid for, is this VR etc.

Since the ads do not say, I feel this saves valuable time for "both" sides.

Please people, don't start accepting this!! - sm

This would be a huge cut in pay, around 30%, so if they don't add 30% to your line rate, please don't accept it!

Paid For Spaces Versus Black Character Only
Apr 05, 2010

Just as an experiment...With Saince I typed about 12-13 reports, typed one that was 18 minutes long in the midst of the others.  It equaled a little over 400 lines (it was under 420). Now, with a job that pays for spaces, I typed one report 12 min long - 126 lines.  Typing 10 reports, I hit 424 lines. The Saince reports were standard type, most 1-1/2 to 2 pages long...ONLY 400 lines???  Most of the ones I just did this morning for another company were mostly 1 page long, VR, dis ...

Is There Any Truth To A No-hire Black List?
Mar 19, 2014

I have worked for 20+ years with two companies and had good reviews and made good money.  No problems with meeting production.  Left one of the big 2 companies last January after pay cuts, nothing nasty, I just kindly and sincerely expressed my opinion why I was leaving.  Since then I've applied with 3 or 4 other companies, was told by one I was on *do not hire list*, but was never given a reason why.  Is there something I can do here?  I'm a good employee and ...

Question Regarding IT And Cerner/RDE Radiology (black Screen)
Jun 17, 2010

There are probably only a few people who have used this system.  Hopefully, they come onto this board and have used IT with Cerner/RDE (black screen). When I maximize my RDE screen (black), the font is perfect.  However, when I attach my word expander (Instant Text) to it, the screen minimizes and the font goes from perfect to just barely visible.  Anyone out there using Cerner RDE and IT together who can help me? Thank you, comrades :) ...
