I am seeing some companies pay based on VBC but the line counts vary greatly. Does anyone get paid this way and what is considered decent. I have seen 5cpl for 43 character lines but have also seen 7 cpl for a 65 character line. Help!

I have worked for 4 years this way and went from 10/10.5 cents per line down to 8 cents per line based on 60-65 character line. It makes a huge difference not to get paid for the spaces. I wish I could get paid 10 cents a line again. I have gone backwards in pay and I have done this for over 32 years in acute care, but I needed a job at the time. Hope this helps.

On average, for a 65-character line 11 cpl for no spaces is roughly equal to 9 cpl with spaces if you are comparing apples to apples (same font, same font size, same platform, same document margins ...)

However, there are too many factors that affect the length of a line from one account to another.

All of this just makes it that much easier for an employer to cloud the issues of line counting and paying on production, if you ask me!

I work for a company that pays this way, BUT they have a 55-character line. I checked in Word with their line counting tool with several large documents. Word will give you characters with spaces and without spaces. I calculated my pay with spaces based on 65-character line, and without spaces based on 55 characters, and it came out to be about the same.

If you are getting the same pay rate or if they are not adjusting how the lines are calculated (55 character line) then it is a pretty significant pay cut!

Did it for a week. Have over 35 years experience. Made approximately $6 an hour!! The company I worked for just had the attitude that that is the future of MTing - get used to it.... Well minimum wage in my state is 9.10 - Forgot to mention that was for IC status!

I remember some years ago, perhaps 2009 or so when there was talk of standardizing the pay by going to the VBC. I also remember seeing that a $0.09 per line rate with the VBC is more like a $0.06 per line rate - Don't do it!

Just as an experiment...With Saince I typed about 12-13 reports, typed one that was 18 minutes long in the midst of the others. It equaled a little over 400 lines (it was under 420). Now, with a job that pays for spaces, I typed one report 12 min long - 126 lines. Typing 10 reports, I hit 424 lines. There are probably only a few people who have used this system. Hopefully, they come onto this board and have used IT with Cerner/RDE (black screen). When I maximize my RDE screen (black), the font is perfect. However, when I attach my word expander (Instant Text) to it, the screen minimizes and the font goes from perfect to just barely visible. I just started Instant Text with Smartype added. Now I have a black box at the top the screen (in Word 2007) with what apparently is part of the smart line in it (it lists the 1,2,3 etc). Does anyone know how to get that to go to the bottom of the screen under the smart line. I've already tried smart line preferences and that did not help. ...

Does anyone know where to get GOOD quality ones? I've been suckered TWICE by buying them online---they are these little thin things that break every single time before I can get them over the ear piece. The only ones I've found so far that are good are the ones that come with the headset, but I don't want to buy a new headset every time I just need new pads.
