Transcend's Makeup Pay... - sm

Posted: Feb 01, 2012

The last 2 weeks (pay period) have been my first pay period off training.  I received a email today along with others because it wasn't just for me but other members of the region as well.  It said that upon reviewing our ADP Timesavers that there was an issue with the number of hours not amounting to min. wage (7.25).  I have to say the first 2 weeks off training on this new acct was not fun.  There were some hard dictators, not all of them, but the ones that were took a significant amount of time.  I feel by the 2nd week I had improved a little.

My QA scores are 99-100%.  I also think I am taking too much time looking for blanks for the difficult ones.  Also the cc names, looking for those, takes time.  I am hoping I pick up a bit.  At Nuance previously I did not have this issue.  But then, I was used to the account and dictators so...

Anyways, we were advised to make sure our hours we put in were correct and only put in time for actually typing.  We were advised to download a stopwatch on our desktop and when we stop to look up a blank to click on it to stop our time because only time "actually typing" can go toward our time.  That is the first time I've been told to not include looking up blanks as time worked.  That is going to be a pain stopping a stopwatch for blanks.  Maybe this is just a learning curve.  Hope so.  Other than this, I am happy with Transcend.  A lot of work I have to say.  Wish me luck....:)

I work there too, - sm

but I would NOT deduct time looking for blanks. Spend less time looking things up maybe, but that is pure baloney. Been in this biz many many years and that is just part of the job. If I get up to go take a pee, that is on the job too, just like being in a hospital. If they want us to deduct all that, then pay us 2 or 3 times more base rate.

Also at Transcend - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
You say you have been there for 2 weeks. I have been there for 4 months now and still have to look up lots of MD names mainly because I have such difficult dictators that I care barely make out half the time what is the first or last name of said MD.

I have yet to receive a QA score. Been doing this for over 20 years and all specialties and have to say these are some of the most difficult dictators I have ever run across. I wonder if each region is different, because I have inquired about QA scores and the like and never seem to get that information. Also, running out of work from time to time, which I am not happy about it.

About the hours and minimum wage, I have received emails early on that sometimes my line counts did not "add up" basically to the amount of time I worked and basically telling us to put down less time than actually worked? Wondering if any other MLS adhere to this standard.

Hands to the keyboard time only - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
is what they will tell you and tell you and tell you and until folks stand up to that garbage, it will continue. I was told that I was NOT to put my shift time down unless I was spending the entire time typing, and I'm sorry, research is part of the job, it's not all typing, production employee or not.

If they only want time spent on keyboard, dont stop to look - anything up, leave a blank

[ In Reply To ..]
I wouldnt look up a thing! No doc names, no meds, nothing... Just type for 8 straight hours, then hang up.

Otherwise, you could end up typing 10, 11, 12+ hours to get your 8 in. That is crazy.

You guys should report these people to the state labor board - nm

As far as I know, we are the only ones required to account for literally every second worked. None of the TLs or higher ups worry about phone calls, answering the door, getting something to eat, bathroom time being deducted from their checks. Got into a huge disagreement with my TL over this stupid stuff. I also was told about my time "adding up". Told her to do what I have to do with the ESLs I have (over 98% and they are hellacious) and then tell me I am not performing. Their speech is so bad, I actually cannot determine the date.

Good for you! Hope it is everything you hope for and things develop the way you want them to. I always keep something lined (Plan B) just in case. No one ever knows what tomorrow will bring and I like having a bit of a cushion. At one point, I worked 4 jobs to keep things going and take care of my obligations. Was rough, but got through it and got things positioned in a way I was more comfortable with.

Thanks and good luck to you! It's a shame how this field is not what it used to be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will get in the nursing program this fall at our local college. Time to move on and realize that I can no longer survive on a transcriptionist's salary. It's always a good thing to have a plan B!!!

Transcend Makeup Pay - Hate to tell you-LeeLee

[ In Reply To ..]
Went through this myself and Transcened means it. They do not want you counting any time at all if your fingers are not clickety clackin'. Any time you stop for anything, and I mean anything, they want the time made up. Believe me when I tell you, you are being monitoring much more than you know. I have literally been called when I left my desk to go to the bathroom. (I know take a phone with me to the bathroom; pretty sad, huh?) Try to pick up speed anywhere you can, shortcuts, formatting, etc. Good luck!

Oh my gosh, are you kidding? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Called when you went to the bathroom? I don't even know what to say.

Unless all the variables are in place, great - dictators, familiarity SM

[ In Reply To ..]
with dictators, great VR drafts, and you are a speed demon, you cannot possibly write in 8 hours a day on your time card if you are full time (there are exceptions, I know.) Since your FT status is dependent upon money earned per pay period and not by working 40 hours a week, you just have to worry about the money, even if it takes you 9-10 hours a day to do it. Do they have minimum hours required for FT and PT? If so, they you are probably working overtime hours in order to make the time card work for them, although no overtime paid. They are only concerned about time cards showing you are actually making minimum wage or below, which you may be if you don't have all the variables listed above. Does anyone know the average lph required for VR for this company? If it is 200 or 250 lph for VR, take the lines you did, divide that by 200, and that is the amount of hours you should put on your time card. I think the OP will get better and faster with time. As I reread this post, I wonder how ridiculous this might sound to someone who is not in this profession. Researching is part of the job,an important part IMO, which makes for a better quality product and cuts down on QA time and TAT.

OMG-kidding - LeeLee

[ In Reply To ..]
Let me clarify that comment. I got up to go to the bathroom. Apparently, they felt I was "away from my desk" too long (obviously they could not see me in the bathroo...thank God for small favors...LOL). They called and wanted to know why I was not working. To avoid that problem in the future and be able to answer all calls during my work time, I take the phone with me.

If only time typing is included in time worked, then don't look - anything up and see how they, sm

[ In Reply To ..]
like that. In essence they are telling you we only pay for typing, so looking something up is not in their job description. Boy, that would definitely save you some time. I've never heard anything more ridiculous than this and cannot get my mind off of this post. I'm sure they would tell you after sending all those blanks to QA, that you need to research the blanks. This company better get a grip on what they are advising their MTs. You cannot work as an MT and not look something up, and I'm not about to give my time away for nothing. I think I would be questioning this to the higher ups. Maybe someone needs to put a bug in their ear as to how illegal this practice is. Again, don't work for nothing. Your research is part of the job and is considered work, not just time spent on the keyboard. I wouldn't even bother to work for this company with that going on. Good luck with that.

Transcend - higher ups - LeeLee

[ In Reply To ..]
These rules came from the higher ups. Going to them is useless. You are monitored on what you produce by hour, SR and straight, how many hours you log, what you type, when you type, how many reports, how much time it takes for each report and the list goes on. If you send too many reports to QA because you did not look up blanks, that is monitored, as well, and you are called out on it. If you have excessive QA "blanks" because you did not want to take your hands off the keyboard, you are written up. They got it covered 9 ways to Sunday and back. Without working in this situation, posters can "suggest" all they want as to what should be done, but how many would actually put their family;s welfare on the line and loose their jobs. The higher ups do not care about your time, only their own. They are not concerned about your difficulties, only their own. Do everything I can to work within the system to better it for all of us, but it is an uphill battle every day.

Personal circumstances like paying a mortgage, feeding children, keeping utilitie, caring for elderly parents, sometimes take first seat over speaking out the way someone wants. Personally, I will put up with whatever I have to (and gladly) to care for my family. When the time is right, I speak out and do so forcefully. When I find that I need to replace my current job, I move on. Until then, I will not morph into Norma Ray at the expense of my family. There is a time and place for everything, and anyone in a difficult situation has to make that determination on their own. I am sure all on this board will know what to do and when to do it. Wish everyone the best!!

a chart with tons of numbers on it at the end of the payperiod which shows your average line count/hr and whether you did the minimum or not, plus how many hours you were "actually typing", then how many hours YOU OWE THEM! So, if in an 8 hour period you were only actually typing 6.5 hrs, you owe them 1.5 hours typing time. What have we come to!!!!

totally wrong - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I wouldn't look up anything and if they said I sent "excessive blanks," I would explain to them that "my job is to keep my hands on the keyboard, not to do research. QA gets PAID to fill in blanks, i.e., do RESEARCH. I cannot do my job and their job and only get paid for keyboard time." yes I would do this at the risk of losing the job. doesn't sound like much of a job to begin with. get fired, get unemployment, and move on.

totally wrong-anon - Again, easy to say

[ In Reply To ..]
I would never assume I know anyone's personal situation on this board as all are complete strangers. Very easy to dictate to someone else what to do without knowing what they face daily in their personal lives. Each person has to handle a situation based on their personal circumstances, and unemployment (approximately 80%) of an already decreased income is not a viable solution for many. This is especially true if the person risking "job loss" or firing is the sole provider. Makes a bad situation only worse. I would/do look up and research whatever I have to (no matter who I work for), to do the very best I can...I would not want any patient care to suffer over my disagreement with an employer. If employers do not use integrity in their dealings, I can still choose to use integrity in mine.

at the same time, I would be actively looking for a new job. I have had several new jobs since 2003, when it seemed the bottom fell out. I went thru a lot of really crappy ones, and was always afraid to try a different one. I always thought "well is this going to be better, the same, or God forbid worse?" So I would stay put thru days and days of no work and literally losing everything. lost my house to foreclosure, filed bankruptcy. downsized to a 2-bedroom apt, downsized again to a 1-bedroom apt. now in smallest place I have lived since 1992. finally have decent job so that at least I can pay my rent even if I am in much smaller space. seems like every year I was "starting over." but finally at least my feet are on the ground. and I would document every e-mail and send followup e-mails about every conversation, you know the "per our conversation" type and outline exactly what they said to me on the phone. I hate these places that just are killing our very souls and we mean absolutely nothing to them, yet without us they would have no company and no job. you have to believe in karma one day.
okay but then- anon - who said that they were not
[ In Reply To ..]
looking for another job. Entire post was not fully read. I followed the whole thread on this board, top to bottom. No one ever said they were not gathering info or looking for better jobs or putting together a complaint for Labor Relations (a lot was assumed by SOME of the subsequent posters that these issues were not being addressed. Obviously, no way to know that). There is a lot read into these posts that is just not here. As an earlier poster said (which was taken out of context by another poster farther down), sometimes you have to pick your battles. Speaking up at an appropriate time, FORCEFULLY, does more good than harm. Subsequent poster went onto say that is why companies get away with this - because no says anything. How does anyone know what any of us said to the TLs, managers, etc. The fact is, none us have that information. I prefer to arm myself with facts and backup before I storm the gates. Does no good to just make accusations; AGAIN I AM NOT SPEAKING FOR ANYONE ELSE - DO WHATEVER YOU FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE WITH, BUT DO NOT TELL ME WHAT TO DO OR HOW TO DO IT. Everybody's personality is different and how they handle stress is different. Hope your situation improves; I know first hand how tough that can be.
Transcend's tactics - Alice
[ In Reply To ..]
I would be very interested to hear what Transcend's reaction would be if someone WERE fired for presenting a correct timecard, claiming all hours worked, whether on the keyboard or not, and then was fired as a result, and then claimed unemployment. How would Transcend react to this? If I were this person and applied for unemployment, I would surely include all the details, including copies of the emails from Transcend telling you how you were not allowed to claim all those hours spent researching. I would also include any correspondence from Transcend regarding your NEED to research blanks, carbon copies, names of persons and places included in the report, etc. How dare they expect you to research this stuff and get it exactly correct and then not be paid for your time!!

In addition to an unemployment application, I would consider making a report to DOL as well.

They refused to change them, but the problem was this put them below minimum wage, and Transcend refuses to pay you extra to bring your wages up to minimum (as do many of the other MTSOs) you get a warning and then pink slip.

I'm dealing with exactly the same situation. It's just so wrong. My husband can't believe how these companies get away with it. He says we should report it to the Labor Board...even contact John Stossel...something needs to be done. I've been in this field a long time. I used to consider it a great career. I work full time and make the same amount now as what I made doing part-time years ago. Tired of it!

I'm free to burn bridges. I've been in the industry 17 years. I'm done. These big MTSO's are, putting it mildly, dastardly. The problem IS that many people rely on this income. I don't think everyone should be worried so much about more work being offshored, a lot of facilities don't want it. There's also a post on that other social media site about this very same thing. When anyone is ready to go to bat on these issues let me know. I know a big law firm that could help, maybe even pro bono. I'm ready, payback is a bitch!

Transcription is not straight typing. It never has been. It is a lot of researching. If the wages are so low that they do not accommodate this obvious fact, then its the wages that should change. I would never give in to this. Ask your state labor department what they think.

Research/production - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
According to the powers that be at Transcend, we are 'production employees,' thus, if we're not 'producing,' i.e., hands to the keyboard, then we should not get paid. Research, though a part of this job, is not (according to Transcend) part of production and they don't want to pay for it.

Do QA scores go down with blanks sent to QA? - I think so

[ In Reply To ..]
Have been trying to avoid sending blanks to QA because from what I heard your QA scores do down when they have to find them, so we better fill in the blanks. I really understand how long it takes to fill them in sometimes too!
