Is it plausible that an MT here can make line count/quota, whatever they call it, reliably? Do you have steady work? Just curious as I'm thinking of applying.

My region has more work than we can handle, and overtime is often offered. I can reliably exceed the pay period quota by at least 40 percent without even breathing hard.

Of course, it helps that I am scary-fast at this, and have been on my primary account long enough to know it very, very well.

I am on Beyondtxt and the editing drafts are so terrible now that my speed has been cut by at least 1/3. Maybe you have an account where the editing is better and you can actually get some lines, but right now it is pretty hard to do.

I just left Transcend because I couldn't make a living there, but it was the account and not Transcend's fault. I know people who do very well there, but I also know others who left for the same reasons as myself.....its up to you, it depends on the account you are on.

Scary-fast is 250-360 LPH straight typing - and low 500s for editing

I am very fortunate in that I have mostly pretty good edit drafts.

I have also created a boatload of my own shortcut keys, using Shorthand, and all my most-used ones are remapped to the home keys, so I don't have to bounce around the keyboard as much. Just one is CTRL-J for CTrl-right arrow, and CTRL-H for delete the word the cursor is at the beginning of. I have lots and lots of others, including various manipulations of commas and periods and the like. It's amazing what you can come up with when you get creative. The shortcut keys are where most of my editing speed comes from

the key to being fast at editing. How did you learn to do this? I just don't understand how to do it. I have one command that I use and someone told me exactly what to put in there.

Just go to create a new SH entry, and give it a keyword that is NOT something you would ever type in the ordinary way. Then, click the button to assign a shortcut key; this is where you give it, for instance, a shortcut key such as CTRL-J or anything else that involves a CTRL or ALT key or some combination thereof.

For the "text to type" you can click the "record" button, and then record the exact sequence of keystrokes that you want to be triggered when you use the command, then stop recording when you're done.

If you rummage around in the SH manual, there's also a list of "@key" commands you can use.

Here's one to get you started. The shortcut key is CTRL-comma, and here is the "text to type:"

I use this one to insert a comma between 2 words, and I trigger it with the cursor on the first letter of the NEXT word, i.e. the word that CTRL-right arrow takes you to. For instance, if the edit draft gives me this, in a list of complaints:

hypertension hyperlipidemia

and I want to put a comma between them, I put the cursor on the first letter of the second word, i.e. hyperlipidemia, then trigger my CTRL-comma shortcut, and it becomes:

hypertension, hyperlipidemia

Anyway. There's not much you can't do if you start experimenting. Good luck!

but it was an earlier version that only worked in XP; will not reliably work with Vista or Windows 7.

The most current version of Shorthand that you can buy yourself, however, DOES work in Windows 7.

on it. The rest of us that are just starting are having a terrible time just trying to stay part time because the editing drafts require so much work. I am sorry to say that I am going to have to quit because I am not even making minimum wage here unless I work 10-12 hours and put down 6-8 on my time sheet, if that. I have horrible accounts and difficult dictators and not enough samples to even help. It takes forever to get through the very lengthy instruction sheets to try to find an answer that may or may not be there on an account. I think if they just did one thing to help the MLS along, that would be a step in the right direction, but until they fix that editor, we are doomed.

Is the platform based on Word? Wonder if ShortCut would work as a word expander. Have just applied with this company for QA with 25+ years experience. Do you get the leftovers from speech recog or reports transcribed? Thanks for your response and I'm looking forward to working for this company!!! Have to move forward.

In QA, you would essentially get reports where the MT couldn't complete it for the usual reasons, i.e. couldn't figure out a blank, or any other situation specified in the account specifics. For instance, on some accounts, if there's a blatant discrepancy that the MT can't resolve, that might go direct to the client, or QA might have to pass it through. Each account has different requirements.

Leftovers from speech rec is really not applicable, because if the MT is doing their job, any report they send to QA should be as complete as they can possibly make it, regardless of whether it started as a straight-tying job or an edit-mode job. The end result will be a completed report that might just have a blank or two in it, or an unresolvable discrepancy.

The only exception to that might be if an account (or an MT) is on 100% QA, in which case you have to listen to the audio all the way through, and you might catch speech rec errors that the MT didn't catch--but you aren't SUPPOSED to actually find any of those, if they're doing their job....

Also, a general company-wide policy is that if it's an audio problem and the blank is not resolvable by any means short of mind-reading, we MTs are expected to use our best professional judgment and not clutter up QA with those kinds of problems... unless the account instructions specifically say so.

I am curious as to if the TLs are meeting their requirements. They are expected to type 75-80% of their time and get paid by the line as well . I am very suspicious that they are not typing VR all day, having their work sent to India, etc, and are getting the straight typing. They get paid a flat fee per month for their administrative duties on top of that. I wonder if they are experiencing no work and looking at a blank screen most of their time& ...

I have read dozens of posts on the board about Transcend, some good and a lot not so good. However, I think there is an explanation for some MTs loving it there and others hating it so much. Transcend is a company made up of many other companies through mergers. The original Transcend who existed first, before acquiring other companies seems to be the problem. I was with the company for over five years, not once failing to meet the requirements of me yet I was told my position would have to change to 2nd or 3rd shift if I wanted to keep my job as there were no positions available for 1st shift. Did anyone else get the memo from Transcend (soon to take over from DTS) about the line rate change for the transitioning employees from DTS? It was elegantly written, but basically it said that when the accounts are switched over the VR that the line rates will decrease but productivity will increase and no cut in pay is expected. I've been offered a job with Transcend but it is part transcription and part SR. I've never done SR and have no idea what to expect or what I will earn. Anybody have any averages for SR lines per hour or work for Transcend and do SR and transcription? I transcribe about 250-300 lines an hour, if that makes any difference. I have been with Transcend for several years. I loved Transcend in the beginning. The people cared about me, actually made me feel worthy and valued (25+ years experience) and I felt as though I was part of a family. At least when they bought my smaller company they didn't cut my pay. Restructured it, yes, since they didn't pay incentive bonuses, but made absolutely sure I didn't lose money. Nuance, on the other hand, just gutted me after buying Transcend. MASSIVE pay cut that is now causing me to have to find a second job.
