TRANSCEND: The Good, Bad, and Ugly - Looking

Posted: Jan 19, 2012

Hi,

I would appreciate input on Transcend please-- the good, bad, and ugly!  Particularly interested in rate of pay, if pay is on time, if they hover or leave you alone to do your work, whether they're well organized or not, if there are tons of account specs or not, ease of platform use, etc.

Thanks!

I work at Transcend... - blondie

I haven't worked for them long, just since Dec 20th. So far, so good. I don't know if different platforms pay differently or not, but I work on BeyondTXT night shift and make.0875 for straight and.0475 for editing. If you work days, the pay is less, but I don't know how much.

I haven't had a problem with anyone hovering over me. They leave you alone to wo, BUT at the same time, they will help you all they can. I have worked before at a large national where I felt kind of secluded because you never heard from the team lead or anyone. It isn't like that, at least on my account anyway. My team lead always sends update emails in the morning, afternoon, and evenings to let us know what the work load looks like, etc. Just emails to keep you in the know, makes me feel like part of a team. It is common to get an email from the ROM or team lead letting you know how much you are appreciated and how great the team is doing, etc. I like to feel appreciated.

They seem pretty organized to me so far.

The acct I work on now, which is a new acct (only went live last week), has 18 pages of acct specs.

This is my first time working on BeyondTXT. I find it to be pretty easy to use. They have other platforms also that they use.

All in all, so far, I like it there. I hope this helps you.

So, the VP of Ops is nicknamed Blondie. Wonder who's writing this?

Any who are you to say?? She is pretty much right on with Transcend..wow some people...

I wish...lol - blondie

I wish I WAS the VP of operations. Like I said in my post, I have only been there a month, and "so far" it has been fine there. I have yet to run out of work, so I don't complain. Of course, I'm not making a killing.

As far as the people I work with, they have been nothing but nice to me so I really can't complain about them.

It all depends - on your account

[ In Reply To ..]
BeyondTXT is a dog. It is slow and cumbersome if you are used to better. I don't know about the other many platforms they use. The worst problem is running out of work. If you can just sit there and pound it out you can do OKAY.... oh, and they pay different people different rates for the same shift. Be careful.

I had a bad experience at Transcend. - anon

On the plus side, their pay is on time and is not horrible pay. They seemed fairly well organized when I was there (maybe too much so; see below).

I worked the night shift (1-9 a.m.) and did not have any work for the first hour or 2 or 3 every night. When this happened, I was required to check for work every 1/2 hour, so it wasn't like I could go to bed and get any meaningful sleep, and I was required to make up the time at the end of my shift, thus making it later in the morning before I could go to bed. I asked for a second account, but they refused to put me on a second one, since all they had was radiology at the time. I told my supervisor I was experienced in radiology, but there was some rule that they couldn't put an acute care MT on radiology as a secondary because it would make it too hard for payroll to figure out the pay, since radiology MTs were paid at a different pay rate. They finally did give me a second acute care account. My primary account had 41 pages of account specs and my secondary had 45 pages of account specs, so it was a challenge to learn them. Oh...there was also the issue of cherry-picking that went on there. You can see all the jobs that are available, and shortly after I would sign on for my shift each night/morning, all the good jobs suddenly had a line through them, meaning someone else had pulled them from the queue. There was only the team lead and myself working on the account, so guess who was taking the good jobs away from me.

I was on BeyondTXT, and I really liked the platform. I was meeting their production and quality standards right away, but I would still receive a phone call every day (while I was trying to sleep) from my supervisor. On BeyondTXT, they monitor your every keystroke and know when you are using the mouse. Since they do not want you to use your mouse because it slows you down, I would receive this phone call every day from the supervisor telling me what my statistics were from the night before. If I did not answer the phone, I would get in trouble, even though I told her she was calling during my much-needed sleep time and I had given her different times to call me that would not be while I was sleeping. She still would continue to call at the time I was sleeping every day. I told her that they shouldn't care if I use the mouse, as long as I was meeting all their standards, but she said I needed to be meeting my potential, too -- thus the phone call every day.

I also got these same kinds of phone calls from my team lead about once a week (also during my sleep time). I would inform her that I was already aware of the situation, since my supervisor was keeping me abreast of my statistics, but she told me she was required to make that phone call every week anyway to go over my stats.

All in all, they made me feel like I was a terrible transcriptionist, even though I had met all their standards. After 6 months, I finally decided I had had enough, and I resigned. When I sent my resignation letter, I got all sorts of gushy emails and phone calls telling me I was one of the best transcriptionists they had ever had and asking if I would please consider staying, because these are such difficult accounts to staff, etc. They told me if I ever wanted to come back, they would welcome me with open arms.

Having said all that, I am actually considering going back to work for them. I have been in contact with some people who work there, and that particular supervisor is no longer there. I have also been told that who you have for a supervisor and team lead can make a big difference in whether you like it there or not. Even though they are organized, it does seem that there is a big difference in MT support techniques with some being very supportive and some being the nagging kind where nothing is ever good enough. I need another part-time job right now to pay down some debt, so I am thinking of giving Transcend a second try.

Hopefully you will have a better experience than I did if you decide to go there. If you get the right kind of supervisor and team lead, ones who will support you without nagging you to death, you might really like it. I have worked at some places that were worse and at several places that were on the same par as or better than Transcend, so I think if you want to try them out, you should go for it. You certainly could do worse than Transcend.

I have to agree with previous poster. It all - depends on what SM

region you land in.

transcend - kt16

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't see why it matters to them if you use the mouse. My experience is taht the VR is so poor, that you have to juggle everything around and often type it over... that's what they should fix-- not your keystrokes.
WOW! 18, 41, 45 pages of specs... - Looking
[ In Reply To ..]
That is RIDICULOUS to have so many pages of specs! And those numbers are from 2 different posters.

Sounds like it's best to stay away from Transcend, at least for now.

THANK YOU all for your replies!

Transcend - MTMTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I hope you do not get my supervisor when you go back. I will not go into detail right now, but my experience has been absolutely horrid and I will never refer anybody to this company. I will agree with the fact that they do pay on time and depending on what account you get, the pay is not bad at all. I start a new job next month and cannot wait. I have literally been broke for a few months now. I should have never left my other job and taken one with Transcend.

Transcend from MT of many years - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
They do leave me alone to work, and are well-organized. Very kind, very flexible, very professional. Some accounts I have have very few specs, some have much more. I have been there several years now and am very satisfied.

Sends work overseas - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I refuse to work for any company who sends our work overseas, which is why I left with the MDI/Transcend merger fiasco. I still maintain that attitude. There are companies who hire only US MTs and that is how it should be. That is my personal opinion, maybe not everyone's.

I went with MDI for same reason - they did not outsource, sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If you have found a good company that does not outsource, more power to you. But I am not going to shoot myself in the foot for an ideal, when I am the sole breadwinner. In every other respect, Transcend seems to be a good company. A applaud your principals, but though I disagree strongly with outsourcing, I am not going to quit a good job, hoping to find another that does not outsource. Chances are that ideal company will either not survive, or will be gobbled up by a larger company.
to 'same reason' (MDI) - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I am the sole breadwinner in my family, and am not worried about my company getting gobbled up by another. There are still some good places out there with some standards that are important in my eyes. Understand your idea but again it's always all about $$$ isn't it?

You make more money if you don't have to spend your day on discharge summaries by residents who:
1. Learn English on your time.
2. Repeat things endlessly.
3. Redictate every report on the chart.
4. Speak extremely slowly.
5. Spend long periods pausing and ruffling through the chart.
6. Get confused, correct themselves, correct their corrections, etc., etc.
to happy at ts - me
[ In Reply To ..]
Discharge summaries are the cake of the biz no matter who dictates them...they are not complicated. Have done my share of them and part of being MT is the ability to do ESL, unfortunately. The only positive thing I can say about Transcend when I was there is I could do 400 lph on the Bayscribe platform, it was so easy. :) We all make our own choices, I didn't mention anything about $$$ when I said I just wouldn't work for offshoring companies. It came after that and while I agree $$$ is important, as an old-timer I feel everything should be USA-based. If it lights a fire under someone's butt for some reason, not my problem. Good luck to all in this industry. Let's hope it makes a true comeback.
