I can sign on with them, but they're strictly BOS 3. I'm still in the dark ages with BOS 1. How much time am I going to spend with my head in the book? What things should I focus on (re)learning first?
Also, what kind of paperwork do I need to take care of, line counts, billing? Do they take care of that? All I do with my current company is submit my online line count at the end of the pay period, and two weeks later I get a deposit in the bank.
This is the only IC position I've ever had, so I don't know what to expect.
Ok, I am probably going to get reamed for suggesting this. Whether it is illegal or not (copyright issues), in my mind, is debatable. I just think that if you buy a book for $60 or more, it should last more than 6 years before the information is obsolete.
So, here goes.
There are textbook rental sites that you can go to. Right now, you can rent the Book of Style 3rd Edition for $22.98 (zero shipping charge) for 90 days.
It is my understanding (and please someone who currently has the hard copy book of the Book of Style 3rd Edition, please correct me if I am wrong), that the only changes between the editions are listed in the Preface.
This is from an ad announcing the 3rd edition:
- A "What's New in This Edition" preface that provides a detailed list of all changes in standards of style addressed in the text for ease of reference
So, you can either
1. Rent the book and read it cover-to-cover in 90 days.
2. Photocopy the Preface page and make note of those changes in the Edition you currently own.
The reason why I do not think it is totally illegal is because I found the entire (562 pages) of the Book of Style 2nd Edition on-line. So AAMT/AHDI can’t be too concerned about copyright infringement. (By the way, for those of you whose company still uses only the 2nd Edition and not the 3rd Edition, even if you have the hard copy book of the 2nd Edition, this pfd file is great for a quick search. Also, if there is something you constantly are confused about, you can print off just the pages that are most important to you and keep them in a separate folder for quick reference later, instead of having to find it in the book over and over again.)
By the way, in researching the current prices and availability for the Book of Style 3rd Edition, I kept running across the following statement:
This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Makes me wonder if AHDI is in the process of publishing a new edition, so everyone who takes the “mandatory” CMT examination (anticipating that it will become mandatory in the next couple of years) has to buy one in order to pass the test.
And YES, I am totally skeptical and cynical when it comes to AHDI.

Good luck.
