Is that Durham Rehab ad legit? I smell a scam, anyone else? - Not applying

Posted: May 15, 2010

This ad just doesn't sit well with me. Did anyone apply and get a response?

I applied - RLee

[ In Reply To ..]
I just sent resume this morning so not much time has passed in order to get a response. I did go to their web site and I found Durham Rehabilitation Institute is located at the Durham Regional Hospital, part of Duke University Health System.

TO: RLee – did you hear back from them yet? Please see message - Good Luck

[ In Reply To ..]

WOW – the ad is gone from the Job Seeker’s Board.  I wonder if the Moderator deleted it or if they deleted it themselves?

@RLee

I am not saying they are a scam, but the flags sure point to a “be very, very careful” situation.  To begin with, their ad just read strangely.  Not professional wording.

RLee:  You said you submitted your resume this morning and got a reply this afternoon.  I submitted my resume 20 minutes after they posted it on the Job Seeker’s Board yesterday, and never heard back (I am NOT saying I am better than RLee and that I should have gotten an offer before RLee – I am just making a comment about what happened with me – so don’t get your panties in a bunch).

The information on your resume is sufficient for shady people to run a credit check.

The part of  RLee’s post that concerned me the most was “They would be timing my promptness on an auto-timer, thus the sooner I returned the transcript, if I was interested, would count in my favor. The timer starts when the test tape is sent out and stops when they receive it back; this would be sufficient for them to make a decision.”

First red flag of scams is when they say:   “You MUST act quickly – one time offer.”

You had to download a file to transcribe that 2 minute report.  ANYTHING can be imbedded into that download.

If you have a malware program, I would suggest that you run it as soon as possible, just to be on the safe side.

As I have drilled into my kids from the moment they could understand – Better safe than sorry.

I truly hope Durham Rehab is everything you are looking for, but being in cyberspace makes us very vulnerable to predators.  Please do whatever you can to protect yourself.

Please let us know when you hear back from them and if you get a website, city, or other information.  I am truly hoping they are a great company.

Good Luck.  Hope things work out for you.

Did you even try to check them out before your sent - your resume to them? Just curious.

I goggled Durham Rehabilitation Institute and got several hits. As stated in my above post - they are located at the Durham Regional Hospital, part of Duke University Health System. It gives address and other info. I did an AVG virus scan and the scan found no threats. I also did a computer checkup and clean disk and my computer seems to be runnng fine. I deleted the test file as well. Just goggle for those that are in doubt - Durham Rehabilitation Institute. I have not heard anything back as yet since I sent the test in. If I do I will post. Thanks for any concern expressed, but I found a legitimate web site fairly easily.
They are a legitimate facility when you google them but have nothing to do with the ads that was on - I am the Easter Bunny
[ In Reply To ..]
They can call themselves what they want and obviously have NO affiliation with that company. I mean, what better why to sound legit and have people apply rather than use a facility's real name. Of course, they never realized some people would actually look up the domain address. Durham Rehab does NOT go by dr.com..It's an organization so at the very least it would be .org as is most hospital domain addresses. I'm the Easter Bunny and if you google me, you will see quite a few legitimate websites but does that mean my address really is Bunny@eb.com. I think NOT.. It is too bad the moderator did not take it down before people had already applied.
Your information is not correct EB... - sm

Many hospitals use dot com web domains.

Their email addresses are based on their website address. Dr.com is not even in ISP that offers such services.

Durham Rehab might indeed be legitimate but that doesn't mean the people/poster asking for your information is legit and it does not mean they work for Durham.

Something is up. Glad it was removed but something is definitely up.
Thanks for the clarification. That is what I was emphasizing..the facility is real but probably not - Easter Bunny
[ In Reply To ..]
I have worked for our two local hospitals and all of our addresses always ended in .org. I just know it was a preferred domain but you are right in that some organizations may use .com.
Also when I went to the "legitimate" website, it is dukehealth.org - Easter Bunny
[ In Reply To ..]
and when I looked at an email address, it was .org.. So, this is obviously just a scam where they are using a legitimate facility to get people to apply.

dr.com - Jolly MT

Looks like a scam to me.

If you search Durham Rehab none of the hits come up with that domain name/extension.

If you just put in the dr.com it comes up with a bunch of links.

I wouldn't send my resume w/o a way to further know they are legit.

I agree. That is what I questioned it. dr.com is not the domain for Durham Rehab. it's dr.org - still smelling a scam

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to fall for these.. but not anymore. I also look for legitimate websites and this does not match. Sorry RLee.. hopefully you don't get scammed/spammed to death

If I hear back - RLee

and get a chance to speak to anyone - I feel I am educated enough to smell a rat if one does exist.
I'd have to guess you won't hear back since they do not have a legitimate website. - But stranger things have happened.
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not on this board so much but I did know you were fired from Transcend and all of that. You haven't been able to find anything since then? I am kind of in the same boat. I keep looking but have had to turned down quite a few because of pay etc. Guess the days of good jobs are gone!!!
Test for Durham Rehab - RLee
[ In Reply To ..]
I received an email back very promptly after submitting my resume. They stated they liked my resume and would like to test my skills with a very brief test. They also stated they know all too well how frustrating it is to sit for long periods of time transcribing test files and only need to see a sample of one testing. They would be timing my promptness on an auto-timer, thus the sooner I returned the transcript, if I was interested, would count in my favor. The timer starts when the test tape is sent out and stops when they receive it back; this would be sufficient for them to make a decision. The test was only a 2-minute test dictation. Needless to say - I typed it and emailed it back to them. I will just wait and see what transpires from there.

No, I have not been able to find work. I am finding it difficult, as I have no acute care experience. I will just keep applying and eventually something will come my way. I guess PATIENCE is the best option at this point.

still smelling a scam - wondering

I just tried to google dr.org and it is not available. How did you get this information

?

I ran a whois search at Network Solutions. - and dr dot com is not Durham Rehab

It gets better. Aboutus.com says this:
"Dr.com (is) a holding space for real content, sometimes called a parking lot, parked page or link farm."

Further, back at network solutions, we see this:

Lastly... just pull up Dr.com and see what you get.

(I don't think they are legitimately offering any jobs.)

I even searched out Dr.org. There is no real website there either, and the domain name belongs to something called "Disaster Recovery Institute."

Hmmm.

This worries me. A lot. - CrankyOldBroadOnTheBeach

[ In Reply To ..]
Do not, not, NOT send these people ANY of your personal information, unless you are able to somehow independently verify that they are a legitimate company. See the message just above, where somebody did some internet sleuthing on the domain name. It does not look good.

It does seem a bit roundabout, but it could simply be some kind of a creative identify theft scam. Wouldn't be all that hard to set up, either, if someone were determined enough.

Please, PLEASE, everyone, BE CAREFUL. I would really, REALLY hate to see ANYONE get hurt by something like this.

Great I took the test too :-( and sent my resume to them - WORRIED

[ In Reply To ..]
rats

I'm sure several of us probably sent a resume. - Hopelly not dupped.

[ In Reply To ..]
I also received a response with the same timed thing, that they liked what they saw in the resume, etc. I'm in the habit of always scanning, antivirus & Malwarebytes, any attachments before opening them and there was no virus, trojan, etc., attached to the file. The test file sounded a lot like many others that state leave a 3-underscore when you hear the tone, and it just sounded like a regular medical note. I did a reverse lookup on that email and it pulls up a "Dr. Cathy" out of Daytona Beach, FL. Aren't these potential employers that post on the job seeker's board screened before they are allowed to post? I did a search on the boards here before sending my resume, and didn't find anything about them, so I just decided to assume it was a real deal. That will teach me, it is said that when you assume, you're probably 99.5% wrong. Well, I think I just served myself a dish of 99.5%. I think I need a stiff drink about now... ;o;

Durham Rehab - Applied & Received Any Feedback?
May 21, 2010

Has anyone that applied to them received any feedback??  I know there was a lot of talk on this board about them being a scam.  They were very prompt in sending me a test dictation after I submitted my resume, but for some reason not so prompt in getting back with any results.  The test was easy, as it was only one dictation fiile approximately 2 minutes long.  Just curious if anyone has heard anything back - if not - then it probably was a scam, which has not affected me yet thankfully.  ...
