IC Status and deductions - Help please

Posted: May 25, 2010

I have just started a new job as an IC.  I have been an employee and statutory employee but never IC.  I know I pay quarterly taxes and have had them set up by my accountant.  He, likewise, knows of all the deductions I can take, but I have seen a post on here giving a website where you can get this information, as well.

Can anyone give me the link to this site?  Thanks very much!  Laughing

IC - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been an IC for 5 years and have never paid quarterly, but that is because I know I will always get a tax return no matter what. Since I am single, have a child and I use Turbo Tax to make all of my deductions at the end of the year. I just put in the 1099 I get sent at the end of the year and I'm fine. Does everyone set up accounts with accountants and pay quarterly like this? What a pain!

Still Confused About Tax Deductions.
Nov 20, 2011

OK....just to be sure I understand this.....if I am an IC, do I deduct approximately 15% (like what my previous employer deducted for SS and Medicare) OR do I deduct 30% for my part and employer part?   I've been on the IRS website but that's confusing.  Don't have the money to consult a CPA right now.  Don't want to take a job as an IC if this is a mistake.  Have an interview for IC and 2nd interview for employee status.   Sorry to keep repeating mys ...

Line Deductions
Dec 15, 2011

Lines are deducted from my count on each report I transcribe or edit for a particular account, for headers and footers. This is understandable, except I have just realized the deduction is always made at the transcribed line rate, even though 90% of the work on this account is editing. So, I am being charged back more than twice what was paid for these lines.  Is this legal? ...

Home Office Tax Deductions
Sep 26, 2012

Home Office Deductions For Employees
Nov 18, 2009

I did some research and have found that at least according to Federal Government guidelines, you can deduct home office expenses if you are an employee.  The one big stipulation is that you are working at home because it is convenient for the employer.  In other words, they cannot provide you with an office.  Of course, in our case that is a no-brainer.  The rest was pretty straight forward and much the same and I am doing now for tax deductions as an SE.  My accountant ...

Anyone Else Not Able To Make A Paycheck With Insurance Deductions?
Nov 17, 2012

Since July I was on the insurance (515, plus eye and dental so a whopping 600 a paycheck) which was good at that time, then the switch in September to the high deductible (500, plus eye and dental so 585) and well care.  Don't know about you guys, but we go to the doctors for ill more than well per year.  With all the stresses we had this year, husband's job loss and me trying to make a paycheck at 30 hours a week, just got tired of working for nothing! Can Anyone Tell Me, For FT Status PTO.....
May 11, 2010

I noticed I had 19 hours of PTO, had this amount for the past couple of weeks.  After this last payday, it's still the same 19 hours.  I thought they added our PTO every PP?  At least they did in the past, I'd always see approximately 6 hours added every PP.  Is this yet something ELSE they are ripping us off for?  ...

IC Status?
Mar 26, 2014

What "really" happened to IC status?  How did we turn into employees without benfits?  I recall when IC was REALLY IC.  I took a break and things had changed pretty drastically!  We now are required to basically do "shift work," which I understand to a point, but it sure isn't the way it was!!  I recall getting paid more because we did not get benefits, more for fast speakers and ESL--what happened to that?  I personally just dropped out for awhile, and a new ...

Questions About IC Status
Jan 21, 2010

I've worked for an MTSO for about nine years.  Work is scarce, and I need to find another part-time job or maybe just leave and work full time.  I don't know anything about IC.  I see things like you are required to do your own taxes and can work the flexibility of what you want as long as you get the TAT.  I know insurance is not covered in these positions.  But how do you handle time off for vacations or personal days?  Do you go on vacation and then com ...

IC Status Question
Sep 27, 2010

I have 2 accounts, who only dictate once a month. I work for someone who has lost a lot of their work, and so I can't count on them as before. I have 1 other account where I could work until my fingers fall off, but I am concerned about IC status. If I keep these small accounts and maximize working for the the larger one, would I still be considered an IC? How many clients do you need in order to maintain IC status? Does the IRS care if they don't produce enough income to give me a 109 ...
