Exactly what is IC status? - RI MT

I just saw an add for Medscribes in KY that says the job or position is IC status. Yet they give specific hours they want you to work. It was my understanding that IC status was you set your own hours more or less and also pay your own taxes, etc. Please clarify.

they don't want to hire full-time MTs and have to provide benefits (even though crappy) and/or a percentage of SS taxes, so they say they hire IC, however, they want you to work a specified scheduled day and time, plus a weekend day usually which is NOT IC but EMPLOYEE status! More and more are doing this and should be turned in to gov for it. There is a whole section on irs.gov about IC status versus employee status. Another way to rip us off is all!

Not paying unemployment and workmen's comp taxes. Because despite what you read on here a lot, companies do not pay unemployment. It is a federal program administered by the states, funded by everyone's income taxes and a payroll tax on employers. Same with workmen's comp.

requiring schedules as one of your clients. IC does mean work your own hours, and why companies continue to place stringent schedules is beyond me. Some people argue they need coverage for those times and that's all fine and well but then hire employees.

Here's how IC works in my opinion and for me right now: I pick and choose which jobs to transcribe and I have 24 hours to get the reports back. I do have some assigned accounts which are my responsibility but if I cannot make the TAT, I ask for help and another MT steps in at the request of the company. I have no contact with other MTs.

Normally ICs service several clients and an MTSO can be one of them. The MTSO is your client and if you don't like the contract, cross out what you don't like and send it back with modifications or do not contract with them at all. Set schedules and hours are for employees not ICs.

IC doesn't mean you get to work whenever you feel like it. If a company needs coverage for certain days/hours, it is up to you as an IC to decide whether or not you want to work those hours, and if not, you don't take the job. I don't know how people think TAT would be met if every IC just signed on and worked whenever they felt like it. If you don't want to work those hours, then don't contract with this company.

the MTSO should hire employees and pay their share of taxes and give benefits. What is the icing on the cake is that they are paying totally inadequate line rates, most of the time in line with what an employee is paid. Plain and simple, these MTSOs are cheaters.

I feel like it and as much or as little as I want. If companies have set times they need/must have MTs, then they need/must hire employees, not ICs. Another option for a company is to hire multiple ICs in case one cannot provide the service that day. IC is providing a service meaning transcription. IC doesn't mean a company can put their rules on your business. You are a business. You're an IC. You're self-employed. You are your own boss. Don't let companies shove you around into thinking you must do this or that. Not true if you're self employed. You have the right to decline work on any given day no matter what they try and tell you. Turn them in to the IRS and watch how fast they change their "rules/wants/must haves" from a true IC.

Hmmmm....sounds like NEMT, we only hire IC's but you must work 2nd shift and I weekend day, and if you don't want to work a particular day/time we don't flex, we fire...isnt that how you make best in KLAS 2012???

I refused to work set hours, but then Accentus wanted to set my hours, yet not pay my taxes, so of course I quit. I think when you're IC you're the boss in many ways and since you have no insurance and pay your own taxes, work when you want.

What "really" happened to IC status? How did we turn into employees without benfits? I recall when IC was REALLY IC. I took a break and things had changed pretty drastically! I have 2 accounts, who only dictate once a month. I work for someone who has lost a lot of their work, and so I can't count on them as before. I have 1 other account where I could work until my fingers fall off, but I am concerned about IC status. Just for you know what and giggles, I did a status check on my area in DocQManage. I got a shcok when I saw that one of my accounts had 116 awaiting to be collected with 15 of those being late! That would never have happened before outsourcing to India! and there are a couple of other accounts whose waiting for collections are up. I have goggling about MT and India and lo and behold, the Indians are not very happy either. They're complaining about their low pay also! ...
