How do you feel about being asked to tattle (sm) - Long time MT

Posted: Nov 25, 2009

We have a problem on our team with MTs cherry picking *gasp* - I've never worked anywhere where that wasn't a problem. Anyway, I agree it's a problem, and on more than a few occasions I have had to grit my teeth as I work through bad dictator after bad dictator because everyone else on the team seems to have disappeared waiting for the crappy reports to be done. This week an email was sent out asking us all to take screen shots of the queue when we think this is happening, and send them along to our supervisor. I don't know. There's just something about that that doesn't sit well with me. Just to be clear: I am not one of the guilty parties, and it clearly would benefit MY personal line count if the bad dictators were spread out in an equal fashion, but it just seems a big big brotherish and not really good management style. Any thoughts on this?

I think it's a perfect way to prove to the cherry-pickers that they have been caught red-handed and perhaps give them a final warning about the offense. You should be thankful somebody is willing to fix the problem. Why would you feel bad about "tattling" when they don't feel bad about cheating?

I like it too, I get fed up with cherrypickers and I say.. - MT ME

Why does it have to be on the MTs shoulders? - Tattling

[ In Reply To ..]
Why if someone in management knows this is happening, give the ultimatum of picking and losing their jobs? Someone else besides the MTs need to take a hand in this.
Could you rephrase that? - anna

I don't understand what you are saying.
Why should the MT tattle on someone else - Tattling
[ In Reply To ..]

Being on someone's shoulders means you are bearing the responsibility yourself or having to do that yourself. It should not be the MTs place to have to look and then go tattle on another person. Mgm should take care of that if they know it is going on.
I agree (sm) - Long time MT
[ In Reply To ..]
That's pretty much my feeling on it. It's just going to end up making for (more) bad feelings among team members. I'm pretty sure the supervisor knows who the worst offenders are and can probably see them doing it herself on her supervisor screen. I personally don't want to spend my valuable production time taking screen shots and emailing them to the higher ups. If they were doing their job in the first place, this would not be necessary.
hmmmm - seems like...
[ In Reply To ..]
Tattling and MT Long Time are perhaps those who participate in cherry picking with those responses. I say take the few seconds, grab the screen shot, send it in, and make the playing field fair for all again. I deal with it here and there, and you bet I write an email instantly to my supervisor to let her know what is going on. I'm not working to make friends - I'm working to pay my bills!
When you assume, well here you go again - Tattling
[ In Reply To ..]

I have never cherry picked in my life, have no idea how to do it and was told by our company owner that to do so would be grounds for dismissal. I would not put my job in jeopardy. If the higher ups know it is happening, what is wrong with them getting off their b-hinds and correcting the problem?
No, you are wrong (sm) - Long Time MT

I'm the one who originally posted the question that started this thread. If you read that post, I mentioned to be clear that I am not one of the cherry pickers. I'm one of the ones who get stuck with the bad dictators for report after report after report. I don't know, maybe it was the way I was brought up, and the way I brought up my children, i.e., nobody likes a tattle-tale.
I just figured the team leaders were doing it too... sm - tj

I will look and see maybe 6 or 7 jobs of a bad dictator and think I just have to get through these and then the easy one is next, just to see them be taken out of order, so then I think the team leads need to get a certain line count and can pick whatever or whoever they want. Who does that leave to report it to because obviously if you go above their heads whoever you talk to is not going to tell a team lead she cannot take whatever she wants.
Don't the team leads work in order and on TAT also? - MT ME
[ In Reply To ..]
I thought everyone worked on reports in order of priority at national companies? Can't they set up the queues that way?
Not if they get paid on production (sm) - Long Time MT
[ In Reply To ..]
I've seen team leads being the worst cherry pickers, if they also get paid some portion of their production. As far as how it's set up, depends on the platform software. They should all be set up so as to prevent this problem.
When lead and sub-lead (eyeroll) take a day off (like now) - my line count sky rockets
[ In Reply To ..]
And when the MTS who typically pick up the difficult work left by the cherrypickers takes off a day, the account becomes backed up to the point OT is required and TAT is threatened if not breached - It is in everyone's best interest that cherrypicking be stopped in any form.

It's almost impossible to make any kind of line count on my regular shift, and I can usually tell which Lead is working at any particular shift just with the crap I'm handed. You are so right about their "days off" because I am able to get a much better line count, halfway decent dictators who I thought had retired or resigned suddenly appear again.

YES, LEADS ARE THE WORST CHERRY-PICKERS AND ARE ABLE TO DO SO. So why lay it on the MTs? Few platforms are even enabled to allow MT cherry-picking (I know mine is not, but I am able to see the list (in TAT priority) of jobs to be done, thus, I know when I'm being screwed around with by the Leads.

paid on BOTH salary AND production. Why explains why we regular MTs/MEs are often given the ----iest dictators while the better ones are snatched out of our queues with split-second timing. When called on this, though (with cc to management)they often give the lamest of excuses, i.e., "You had several long dictations in your queue & wanted to make it easier on you" (since when was that??)... or, "That job was already transcribed by another MT (a.k.a. that particular Lead)...

(Out of my queue and ALREADY transcribed in zero time? fast work, lady, all the way to YOUR bank!
What I was trying to say is TLs do not have to just take jobs that are next...sm - tj
[ In Reply To ..]
A while ago I mentioned to a team lead about how I would see jobs disappear further down on the listing and she said to take a screen shot of it and then I realized the only people that can take ANY jobs on the list are the TLs who can pull ANY job number they want for themselves or when they want to to give to you. Does anybody else know what I am talking about. They are required to get a certain amount of lines as well. When I realized I was probably talking to the person who was taking the good jobs then I just had to say to myself, oh well must be nice!
Same thing in my book. I understand - it is still skimming. - I get your drift (sm)

Definition of Skimming

A way that Pat takes money from the cashiers till and costs the club revenue. Usually means going through a bottle every thirty minutes, taking one out of every 8 drafts, and one out of every thirty shots. Roughly costs about $150 a night. Also known as a great way to consider it severance pay and to take the train.

Why did you fire the bartender pat? He was skimming.

Cherrypickers make good wages and how they do it is by skimming.

Yes, your info is right on target: Leads may or may not have a line quota, what we do know is 2 things:
1. They are salaried, and
2. They are told from the get-go that they do not have to do any jobs they don't want to do (since their MT duties are considered secondary to their "Lead" (LOL) duties.
3. They are in the cat's seat as far as being able to manipulate jobs, take jobs from MTs' queues, or otherwise arrange the job flow completely to their own liking.

I'm really tired of busting my butt with a whole day's worth of difficult dictators, finally having at least 1 decent dictator in my queue & presto! having that job pulled. When calling the Lead on it, I'm told that job was "already transcribed by another MT". My ... how fast and efficient!

We might just be working for the same company, bec. we have the same setup: It shows about the next 20-30 available jobs, both VR & straight, rating according to TAT/priority. The MT logs on and is assigned 3 jobs at a time in his/her queue. For the sake of fairness, the next 3 priority jobs should be assigned to that MT. But, just as you state, quicker than a magician can pull a rabbit out of his hat, the more desirable, understandable jobs disappear 1-2-3 & I get a string of horrible dictators from the bottom of the list of available jobs...risking TAT just so the LEADS can have their choice of jobs. It got to be in the last year or so, the only way I could make my line quota is working odd hours when these greedy Leads were off duty

So--- now, whenever this happens, I call them on it, detailing the specific jobs they took and replaced. If this fails, I just log out. Maybe they'll get the message. This is my LIVELIHOOD and FOOD OUT OF MY CHILDREN'S MOUTH that they are doing. But the leads seem to get by with murder and are protected by management.

I agree, it shouldnt be their job to monitor or tattle, but they may not be able to "bust" the offenders for doing the bad deed without some evidence. Who knows, I just know that I don't cherrypick, never have and get so sick of people who do it. [ In Reply To ..]
I am so tired of working diligently through the bad work (slowly) only to see everyone's line count at the end of the day reflecting huge numbers by the cherrypickers - who then get treated with the utmost respect, get Fame and Glory for cheating. I am so sick of it I could kill someone. Yes, turn them in. It is a bad habit and never should be started. When there is cash being made by the cheating which is cash out of my pocket I have no problem with saying "Mary Lou can't keep up with the account so she cherrypicks to her heart's delight, leaving me with the tough jobs, makes all the money, gets all the respect and my supervisor doesn't seem to notice." I would also go as far as firing a supervisor who turns a blind eye to this behavior because she likes the MT so much and wants to see the big numbers after the cheating liar's name.

Great post. I agree 100% - MT ME

We even had an MT taking home work to do at night to pad her lines - RubySoho

BTDT in-house. We were on tapes as we were doing all of the outpatient clinics, and we would notice tapes disappearing and then reappearing as completed, seemingly out of the blue. Turned out one of the slower MTs was grabbing the 'easy' work (psych evals and any clinic with a good dictator), taking the tapes home and transcribing them, copying them to a floppy disk, then bringing the work in the next day, uploading it onto her computer and printing it off.

YES, I did blow the whistle on her as soon as she told me what she was doing so she could 'keep up' with the rest of us and make big bucks on the generous incentive program.

Cheating is cheating, in any way, shape or form.

the cheating starts already when the jobs ..sm - sm

come in from the clients. I am not sure who is responsible for 'distributing' the jobs into the queues, but the 'cherrypicking' starts already there. 'Darlings' get the easy jobs, not so popular ones get the tough jobs into their queues.
If one complains they deny it and say that jobs come into the pool and they are picked out according to

I would hope you all know that working in most programs, the team leads and supervisors have access to what an MT has in their Q, each time they sign out and all that from their end. I strongly feel they are putting the burden on the MTs by asking you to report any of this. Let them, that's what they get paid for. Might take them a little searching and spending their own time on HOURLY pay. Oh my, we couldn't have that - let the MTs spend MORE of their time without getting paid!!

Yes. agree, and if nothing happens to stop this, - omg

in spite of complaints form MTs, then the team leads and supervisors are in with this, condone and support it, in silence.

cherrypicking - such an easy solution to a massive problem! - Nocturnal Hooter

[ In Reply To ..]
The simple solution is this: Do NOT allow MTs to see the queue. It's a major PITA for the MT when she (he?) thinks she is doing her last report for the day and then has to toss it back because it is 15 minutes long and she has 10 minutes left on her shift. However, during a normal shift, if an MT suddenly gets a migraine, has to go potty, gets a long-winded relative calling from long-distance, blah blah blah... That sort of "issue" shouldn't happen more than once a day, ya know? If the MT CANNOT SEE THE QUEUE, then the MT only sees what is in front of her. What companies still allow the MT to see the queue??????

Excellent answer - Tina

[ In Reply To ..]
I think this is the best solution to the problem, but they also need to keep an eye on team leads as they have a habit of cherry picking themselves and/or assigning work to particular MTs. Also, don't let them saddle you with the worst dictators. I know for a fact that they will do this. It didn't happen to me but one of the other MTs who worked on the clinic notes. She was no longer getting any acute care, all clinic notes, and mainly just the worst dictator of the bunch (funny how all the other dictators were nowhere to be found). She was too timid to say anything or to stand up for her rights so they walked all over her...bless her heart. There's a lot more to it than that also. How they never bothered to train her before the switch to BT (which luckily I had already been trained on), nor did they even test her PC to see if the program would run on it, which it would not. Long story short, she was without pay for nearly 3 weeks and, like most of us, she lives paycheck to paycheck and it really but her in a tight spot...that's about as much as I care to say about it here. Just watch your back and don't take anything at face value.

How about looking at it this way? Management has obviously been made aware of it going on or they would not have issued the directive to take a snapshot when you are aware it is going on. Right? OK, how about if they know it is going on but are having a difficult time watching what is going on 24/7. True cherry picking can and does happen in a nano second. The person sees a doc they like doing or a a few quick reports (short dictation time) from their fav. doc and wham they grab them and put them in their que. So maybe management finds it difficult to stay on top of this manually vs spending the time to go in and research as to what fed into a person's que vs what was taken and put into a que. We as co-workers of someone who is doing it know almost immediately by the work that is flowing to us (fighting through the worst ESL docs, the longest dictations, the docs that change their minds a 100 times during a dictation) and that is all we are getting. It becomes noticable really fast and maybe it is easier/more efficient for us to snap that quick screen shot than management having to sit there and watch all of the people working on a specific account to catch it in progress. So instead of looking at it like tatteling on someone, look at as a directive that has been put down by management to you that this is something your are expected to do during your shift.

If it is put to you as a directive how many of you ignore other directives like change in shift hours, manadatory overtime, requests for someone to fill in a shift, a line count that you are now expected to print out and turn in daily instead of weekly? You don't you reply or comply with that type of communication from management.

Most managers don't like it when you ignore what they tell/ask you to do.
Not sure about all of that.. but the stats list is a great idea - MT ME
[ In Reply To ..]
Although, I personally am all for the screenshot idea, because the person is there in the moment with the evidence, and that is a priceless situation if you are trying to "catch" the cherrypickers--I don't think that MT's are CSI machines. That is a security issue, but if they are in that moment and see something happening, it is in their best interest to want to help stop the bad behavior by said MT's and snag a shot as evidence and just pass it on. After the MT passes it on, they won't be asked to go to court or something will they??

The stats list is a good idea. I know from experience, that if you print out stats by MT, date, doc, time of day, stat or not stat, patterns will develop and the people picking reports out of sequence will show up. It is right there. I know it works, because a pattern develops. Give it six months. Let people know that they are being monitored and will be given warnings about their bad behavior. It really is rude, bad behavior on the part of adults who can't seem to play by the rules, yet preach about team spirit.

Get rid of work pools and assign the jobs. Of course, do it in a way that is fair. Otherwise, how about getting rid of bad dictators..give them clear-speaking assistants or train them to be better. Why do MTs always have to bear the brunt of the crap?

cherry-picking and dumping.... - Nocturnal Hooter

[ In Reply To ..]
Cherry-picking and dumping are kind of two different animals. Another solution to dumping would be to not allow the MT to log back in for 15-30 minutes after rejecting a report, (this could be done via computer-programming rather than via rule or MT Lead supervision in order to streamline the process), or to hold the report that she dumped in a special queue just for her until she either calls in to have it removed (for example, if the work type was one that she wasn't allowed to transcribe) or the 15-30 minute cooling-off period passes.

Back in the old days of my Lanier machine (I think it was a Lanier), if you didn't hit the foot pedal every so often, the voice would hang up and you would have to call back in to get it again. There was something in that set-up that you would always get your own job back if you called back within a half hour or so. If that set-up were programmed into the job assignments now, then you would always get the same job that you tried to toss back. Properly set up, you would have to call your supervisor to have it unassigned from your ID number if it truly were a job type you're not allowed to do or something (misassigned job type I mean). And if you were taking off for a half hour every hour or two, that would put more of a hit on your line count than just sucking it up and learning how to transcribe the difficult dictators. Just some thoughts - I don't really expect any supervisors to be reading this far down in this thread and actually DO something about it, LOL!

My thought is, when sure it's for cherry-picking, which directly harms you and others... - small message

When incentive is involved, paid-for-production, I have seen worse. Example: A hospital with the newest Nuance VR has implimented a new QA policy- if you find an error by a coworker YOU get points in your performance profile. Makes for a hostile environment. But we "have too many employees." Also, with all the old timer's cheat sheets and normals. . .they were more productive before VR!
