Some doctors who have been around realize how poor the documentation with the EMR systems really is. Most don't want to pay what we cost, you are right. We cost the medical system a lot of money. They will gladly sacrifice good documentation for ease and less expense. If they had never mandated EMR systems, we would still have a chance at a career. Those hold-outs do so because they care about the documentation of their patients. But, as those doctors who used us before leave the field, so will the jobs for the rest of us who are still in our field. Just like that nurse didn't know what a transcriptionist is, new doctors won't know any other way of processing their reports other than using the EMR systems and their horrid drop-down boxes.
