I remember working for a large hospital and a doctor telling me that he had no idea how the reports got in the records, that they just did! Our office was in the basement, with no windows, and we didn't really interact with other hospital employees. Kind of weird but it's the way it was. People thought we were secretaries and some even called us the typing pool.
My SIL became a nurse and was surprised that there was a transcription department at the hospital she went to work for; I think she thought I was making up a job or something.
We've always been invisible, just now we're invisible and becoming obsolete.
