I had postpartum depression and I had that. I simply could not stop crying, it was awful. They gave me Prozac, and it took my problems outside my head and calmed me. It was pretty amazing. Not sure what they use now, this was years ago, but I definitely recommend. I was only on it for about 3 months, but it really did help.
I think sometimes it becomes a chemical thing, and there's no shame in asking for help for awhile.
