check back? You assumed that you were okay to leave which should never have been done on your part.

From what you wrote, you chose to work 20 hours a week. I don't know if you did or did not work the 20 hours before vacation but they said, if you take the vacation (which seems like you could have anyway) and then did NOT work 20 hours afterwards, then termination. I frankly do not see where they were wrong but you lapsed in not getting the ok for the time off beforehand.
