What you describe is the MTSO expecting to have the cake and eat it too.
I work as an IC like most everyone else. I had to submit a "preferred schedule" which I keep most of the time. However, I have deviated on occasion or have not been able to work it. Out of courtesy I let the company know and they appreciate it.
I do believe there is a difference between asking for your preferred schedule versus the company telling you what shift/days to work.
