MT today... - Linda

No, you cannot make enough to live on working one job for 7 CPL. MT salaries have been cut in half in recent years and it is no longer a way to make a living unless you have enough energy to work 2 jobs. The MT profession has been reduced to poverty level income due to the middleman, the MTSOs, who keep half your earnings. IF you have alternate income, a husband making good money, disability, or Social Security, you can use MT as a supplement to that, but without it, get ready for the food banks and struggling to keep the electricity on.

There are a very few MTs who say they make a living wage, but this takes hard work, a lot of experience, good dictators (a rarity today) and not too much unpaid labor (checking demographics, online research, etc).

The MTSOs have continued to find every way they can to cut our income such as cutting health insurance and other benefits, not paying spaces or headers and the latest maneuver is hiring ICs rather than employees, where the IC has to pay more taxes and the MTSOs save more money. It's a never-ending battle and unless we can find a way to get our accounts back, cutting out the middleman, it is not a profession that I would recommend if you are 100% self supporting.

Experienced MTs are now looking at getting into coding of scribing.
