Every time I've had to buy a new computer (and they always have new programs on them), I buy the For Dummies books for whatever programs I need to learn, like Word, Excel, etc. They have really come in handy so many times for learning how to get things done, plus most of them are actually rather entertaining to read. Another poster had a good idea about using Excel to put together household lists so you can get your feet wet.... and the For Dummies books can be a big help. Just make sure you get the right one for whatever version of Excel you have.
