Coding / Medical Billing

I was an acute care MT who moved to coding. Both jobs are challenging to perform, but coding is harder to learn even with an MT background. You need more than medical terminology. There are several code sets in use with rules and guidelines that differ for every kind of coding. On top of that, CMS adds its own requirements and opinions. Google "cms coding" for examples and see the link below.

Advice? Start out with training that will give you the CPC and CCS, because that is your best chance to get a job. You have to pass those or you cannot pass employer tests or get them to look at you. Do not count on anyone "giving you a chance." Your chance comes in school.

Coding is also a highly audited field. CMS audits providers heavily. Providers have to defend against that, so they are it on their own and even hire outside companies to audit them. This auditing is much more objective than the audits that employers do on MTs, there is still room for opinions and disagreements. If you cannot stand people looking at what you do and become angered by criticism, do not go into coding.
