Thank you so much for this great information! I will see if shadowing a coder is available in my area. When you were doing your program and shadowing a coder, how long did it take for you to feel comfortable coding on your own? I realize everyone is different in terms of how quickly they learn, but it would be nice if you would share the length of time you had to invest.

I really want to leave the transcription industry. I am looking into going to school to work in IT, but I hate to "throw away" everything I have learned over the last 20 years working in acute care quality assurance for hundreds of providers nationwide. If I go to school to become a coder, it is my hope that some of what I have learned over the last 20 years will be helpful. The thought of starting a new career at my age (48) is so overwhelming, but the transcription industry has become intolerable.

Again, thank you so much for everything you have shared with me. I need all the help I can get.
