Yes - MT acute care to coder

Posted: Feb 6th, 2016 - 7:02 pm In Reply to: Transcriptionist vs coder. - Please help.

Yes, worked as an acute MT now a coder. MT knowledge definitely gives you a leg up when going in. You know medical terminology and are familiar with reports, etc. I find coding way more challenging -learning it, doing it, and ongoing challenges. You have to keep learning and keep up with guidelines, Medicare rules, and it is big, lots of areas to choose from. If you want to work as a coder, first find out what exactly coding is, what exactly you will be doing, then decide if it is something you want to do. if it is, then get a good education that will allow you to pass the credential exams, CCS - AHIMA and CPC - AAPC. You have to dig down and research in deciding, then in picking your education, then forever on in your job. Hope this helps!
