Shadowing is not going to be possible - due to HIPAA

Posted: Feb 6th, 2016 - 2:19 pm In Reply to: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! - Please help.

I am afraid that actual shadowing is not going to be possible due to privacy and security requirements. HIPAA makes it very difficult now even for students to do internships at a facility without formal agreements between the school and the facility, and they often have to pay huge amounts for background checks. Most facilities won't tolerate it even then.

You maybe able to attend a few AAPC local chapter meetings and learn about coding through that. You can meet some local coders and it is possible that they may explain what they do.

You can view code books online on Amazon. You can also find free coding resources online and read them. You can sign up for a free webinar or two. You can find online coding resources at most of the medical professional organization websites. You can read what is available at the CMS website and sign up for some of their free courses. You can see tons of information available on the DecisionHealth website. You can read about certifications and requirements on the AAPC and AHIMA websites. The Andrews School website has a pretty good explanation of what medical coders do, as well as a listing of the minimum course material you need to sit for the CCS exam and do coding well. There are also coding groups on Facebook like Medical Coding Forum that can show you what job announcements and requirements look like.
