My answer will always be that, yes, MT experience helps when learning coding. No, the 2 jobs are not the same. People who have never been exposed to medical terminology can and do learn coding, but being an MT gives you a leg-up in the learning process.

Look at it this way. Suppose you are a great piano player and have been playing for years. Then you decide to learn how to play the guitar. Sure, the 2 instruments are completely different, but having played the piano, you already know how to read sheet music, know the musical notes, the musical scale, you know about beat and tempo. You have an advantage from someone who has never picked up a musical instrument before, who has never read a musical note. May be a silly example, but makes sense to me.

Having been an MT, you won't be spending as much time studying medical term, anatomy, etc. You can devote more time to learning the coding process.
