be smart - not a prisoner

There are many spiritual avenues to travel and one can do “a few good deeds” without belonging to any particular religious group. Making friends and nice social gatherings can be achieved without the need of religious affiliation as well. Churches within a particular religion often develop their own rules in the name of religion because they simply can. The fact the OP feels wary is very healthy and she should continue examining this organization, not just be a blind sheep and “go to church as asked, and join the group.” It would be wise for the OP to be very clear what all the rules are and that she is in complete agreement with their expectations before signing up for the plans she referred to. It is not always easy “to stop if you don’t like it.”
