My employer is moving from trans to MQ's VR platform - Bilboa

Posted: Oct 05, 2011

My employer use MedQuist’s DocQScribe software and is moving us all onto its VR.  So far, what we’re seeing from the VR is almost completely garbage, but MedQuist claims that our corrections will “teach” the VR to recognize our dictators’ speech patterns.  Of course, our wages are being renegotiated, as well.  We have about three dozen MTs and I think a few hundred dictators.

So far, it takes me about 25% longer to correct this VR trash than it would take to delete-all and transcribe from scratch (but of course that’s not allowed).  Admittedly, though, I’m totally new to VR correction.

So, questions for everyone here with experience of both, especially those with experience on MedQuist’s DocQSpeech (I think that’s what they call it):

  • What percentage increase in productivity would you expect (on average) once we’re all accustomed to editing VR?  (This is our HUGE question, because we’re trying to estimate how many of us will be laid off – not to mention what we should expect/bargain for [we’re union, at least] as a line rate.)
  • How much time should we expect for our own “learning curves”?
  • My own experience is that, focusing as intently as I possibly can, my accuracy on VR is still well below what I can do transcribing.  Is this normal?
  • Advice?

 Thanks!

MQ's VR - sm

You will never be "more productive" on their VR program than straight typing.

You will never "teach" the system. I have been doing MQ's VR for 5 years, has not learned 1 thing.

Your learning curve depends on how depressed you become.

You will focus more intently and you will still have errors. That is what VR at the Q does. Not sure why.

Did your pay drop yet? Expect that your pay will drop in half. My income dropped from 1200 every 2 weeks to 550 every 2 weeks.

How much is MQ's VR & how much is VR in general? - Bilboa

Hmmm. Well, you just confirmed what I was starting to suspect, between the garbage it's feeding us so far and other conversations here about VR.

Just out of idle curiousity (because I don't see my employer changing gears and buying another VR product), is there anyone here who has used both MQ's VR and other VR programs? Is MQ's really that much worse than the others out there?

I know my supervisor really wanted our company to buy a competing VR product, but she was overruled because MQ was low bid.

(Which, of course, may well work to our advantage -- IF our union steps up to the plate for us and prevents a pay cut, which of course is a huge "if," with MQ and everyone else out there in the marketplace playing Emperor's New Clothes and pretending that VR doubles productivity and hence can be paid at half the line rate.

We went through the same thing. It took months but once the system is "taught" you will be much more productive, but the pay rate for VR will be about 1/2 of straight typing. (at least for us it is). So the way I see it, more work is produced but we don't get paid for producing more, as our bonus levels were raised along with the lines required. But once you get used to the VR, you will like it a lot better, at least i do.

AnnieOakley -- are you on DocQSpeech or a competitor? - Bilboa

If DQS, well, that's a ray of hope.

If you're on a competing program, I'm less optimistic. I've heard there are some decent ones out there, but I don't think DQS is widely considered to be one of them.

Thanks for the info!

VR does not learn - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I once had a doctor that the VR repeatedly said the same thing for over 3 years and it never learned. Perhaps there are people that settle for VR because they feel they have to. I won't do VR for half the pay. I believe people that say they make okay money doing it, but I don't believe the people that say they make as much doing it as they did typing. I have tested this a couple times by doing a report with VR, timing how long it took and then typing the report and timing it and it took nearly as long to do it in VR as typing, and that is a what some might call decent VR report. Maybe the people that make the claims that they are doing just as well have never checked to see what they would really be making if they typed all those reports. VR is a con. Every day companies are coming up with new technology that is supposed to be better than the way things were before and they aren't, that's how they make money; they con people and people fall for it.

Current Platform At Prn (not PRN Or P.r.n.) Medical Trans. In OH
May 13, 2010

What is the web-based platform they now use and how do/did you like it?  Looking to hear from anyone who works/worked with this company and can share their experiences.  Are lines still hard to reach?  Do they have more than one platform?  prntype was not a favorite back in 2009 -- is this the only platform they have? This is the company out of Kettering, Ohio. (Archive info is from 2007 and uninformative. The website is even less informative for careers with them.)  Th ...

Moving On.........
May 27, 2011

I'm not very happy with my current company due to the loss of several benefits, cost of living pay, etc. and thought about checking out some larger companies, but after reading posts for a lot of major companies, I think I'll stay where I am. At least I have work 90% of the time and I'm paid 8 to 9 cents per line. The grass isn't always greener. :)   ...

Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to ...

I really want to move onto something else..I'm just burned out.  My arms and hands are constantly sore and aching.  I've been doing this for about 14 years.  I'm not paid enough and I just can't concentrate like I used to (very easily distracted...adhd??) FIRED FOR MOVING
Sep 02, 2010

I was recently fired from my MT position because I moved to a different state. I was a full-time employee. I was never informed of such a policy and had actually moved to this state a few years ago when working with the same company. This was apparently a new policy they had come up several months ago. The kicker is that I informed my supervisor of my move and even provided my address and nothing was said until I moved. ...

Moving From DQS To BeyondTx
Feb 18, 2011

I have been using DQS with 2 different companies for a 10 years.  Now I am considering moving to company who is developing a special pediatric division and I have been told a number of former MQers have made this change.  Is there anybody happy with making the jump from DQS to BeyondTx?  I am not asking about the change from one company to another, just the software change.  I left MQ a while back for another company who uses DQS and they have been great.  But I miss ped ...

Moving On After SoftScript
Feb 07, 2013

I, too, was one of the "account specific victims" at SoftScript.  I was fired for a QA score of 90%.  This score was from 100% account specific errors (same error over and over in four different reports).  Rather than counting one formatting or specific error, they dinged me over and over, making my QA score 90.4%.   My question is, when applying for future jobs, if they call SS for a reference, will they tell them that my QA score was that low?  I have never in my 20 y ...

Moving On To A Non-MT Job Opportunity
Apr 30, 2015

I am pleased to say I have found an open door to a job opportunity that is outside of MT work.  It is a job that will utilize my experience in healthcare and my medical terminology.  A very nice pay increase, regular holidays off with pay, and vacation and sick time. No weekend work. Most importantly, a new skill set that makes my more marketable opening up more future opportunities as well. I hope this encourages some of you to see what is out there.  Submitting a resume or filli ...

Feb 08, 2010

This is probably rumor mill, hopefully.  However, I just came across something via Google and wanted to check it with those of you who have been around MQ longer than a couple of weeks.  I just read a blip that said MQ has been slowly raising demands and lowering pay because they are gradually moving all MT business to the outsource venues in India.  Any comments?? Any confirmations?? ...

Moving From EScription To M*Modal
Dec 23, 2014

Has anybody who uses Nuance Emon to manage their dictation system had their hospital switch to M*Modal recently? Can you share your experiences - plus and minuses? Our hospital is about to change with a Go Live planned for early May. Moving Cursor In EXtext
Jan 22, 2015

Hello,  I work for a local cardiology group and we use Nuance with Dragon (EXtext). I was wondering if there is a way to have the cursor move along automatically while I have the foot pedal down so I do not have to take my right hand off the keyboard to move the cursor with the right arrow button. Tell The Potential 2nd Employer About The 1st?
Sep 20, 2011

Took me quite awhile to figure this out. You need 2 MT jobs because they all overhire to keep many more employees less busy to pay less. In my day, you kept your 2nd job quiet, but what is the way to do it now? Is it good or bad to be looking for a 2nd part-time job, do you tell them. Is there anyone who left the first job to go full time with the 2nd one or switched them? And is it better to go IC in the 2nd job because of flexibility? I sound pretty dumb! ...

Contacting Former Employer
