buying American - steady eddie

Posted: Oct 19, 2009

Hey, Everybody:

In the spirit of solidarity, if we want support for our cause, then we might want to consider supporting other industries in America.  There are places to "Buy American" on the website.  We shouldn't support Big Box Stores that import everything and make a killing as well as treat their employees like chattel.  You know who I am talking about.

If we buy into the theory, "Oh, but it's so inexpensive to go there," then we are just as bad as the transcription companies who offshore their work "because it is so inexpensive."

Next time you truly need a new blender (or whatever), why not look on line for an American-made one and support that American company.  It might cost more or it might not, but you are probably going to feel better about doing it.  Or maybe not.  But we are all in this together, and we can use our wallets as weapons in the fight.  That's the only language anyone speaks anymore anyway.  Where's the money? has become the new credo.  Well, we have clout and we could cripple any industry by boycotting it.

Practically everything in Walmart or Lowe's is made in China. Have you ever bought toys made China? Piece of crap and they are sold by Fischer Price.

I have started taking a look at the products I buy and where they are made. Made in the USA is not always more expensive. Everybody get on the band wagon!!!

...boycott Wal-Mart, but it is very difficult to buy American these days. I saw a news report the other night about the garment industry which stated that 97% of all clothing sold in the U.S. is made overseas.

HBO has a program called Schmatta regarding the garment industry. - Tired&CrankyMT

It was on the other night, but I only woke up and saw a tiny bit of it before I had to shut the TV and start work.

A man had been talking about an $8 shirt from Wal-Mart and how buying that $8 shirt made overseas would one day come back and bite us all in the backside as currently only 5% of garments sold here are made in the USA compared to the USA once producing 90+ percent of garments sold here just a decade or so ago.

More than that I couldn't tell you about as I didn't get to see the whole program, but I think it is a program I will be looking forward to seeing the next time it airs.

That sounds interesting...I'll have to try to catch it next time it's on.

All this outsourcing in numerous industries is saving big bucks for corporations but is really hitting the middle class workers in this country. Wonder if it will ever end, or will the U.S. eventually end up a 3rd-world country?

I always try to buy American when I have a choice, regardless of cost. Not only does it support Americans but it's likely to be a much higher quality product. Pretty much everything that comes out of China is junk that wont last and is also highly toxic either with lead or cyanide or some other agent. Many foreign countries don't have strict safety regulations like we do. The only exception I can think of is Honda. Good cars but there's probably some deadly toxic substance in them too, LOL

I agree with you overall, but I must say that sometimes I like to buy their shoes!

and buy local if you can - cj

If you spent $100 at a local business, 74% of it stays in your community and state in one way or another, taxes, wages, etc. If you spend that same $100 at Target, WalMart, Walgreen's, or any other national chain, only 13% of it stays in your home state. We try to buy local, from the same businesses, in our area as much as possible. We go to the mom and pop bookstores, buy produce at the farmer's markets, fill prescriptions at a little local pharmacy, and frequent the local businesses as much as possible. We started buying American only back in the 1970s (when my dad's company moved their operations to Mexico because of the cheap labor) and have done our best to keep it up. I have been preaching this message for 30+ years and it has fallen on deaf ears because WalMart or wherever is cheaper. People just don't look at the real cost in the long run. One of my mom's old sayings - cut off your nose to spite your face! Sure applies to this mentality. Yes, buy American and add to that buy local whenever you can.

I agree! We bailed out the banks and car companies - how about all of us little guys who are getting royaly shafted. I just heard this morning we're going to give GMAC more money. Then they said the car dealers still aren't doing well. All I know is we middle/low class transcriptionists are being sold out. They are now doing VR and QA overseas. Wait until the malpractice suits start pouring in, in a few years. I think it is inevitable.

Good luck with finding that blender made in the - Flora

USA. Kitchen-Maid used to be USA, all China and the Vita Mix one is around $500.00 and I don't know if that is made in the US or not. And an iron. They don't make some items in the US anymore. No matter how hard you look. Fluoroscent light bulbs are another. And you might want to stock up on socks because what was made in the US is now going to Pakistan. If the packaging said Made in Communist China (which is accurate) we might think more of who and what ideas we are supporting.

I have found that you find more USA items at the Goodwill that are from about 20 years ago. I have gotten several nice coats these past couple of months.

On an MT salary, I havent been buying ANYTHING lately. - Not even American. :(

Afro-American Versus African-American
Nov 17, 2012

Afro pertains to a "hair style" usually worn by black people or African-Americans. African-American refers to a group or nationality of people whose decendants originated in Africa. Has anyone ever been corrected on that when getting audited? Just curious. I see this a lot. P.S. Not trying to stir the pot or offend anyone so please, no racial slurs or offensive posts. This is a ligitmate question. How do you type it? or do you think it matters? ...

BOS 3 Worth Buying?
Nov 15, 2010

Is it worth purchasing the BOS 3 before I start testing?  I have looked online to see what others have said, and it seems like most have said they wouldn't spend the money because it's not that different from the 2nd version.  One person said they read the book and saw only 2 changes from the previous edition.  I'm not sure what to do.  I'm worried that I'm going to need the newer version to pass the test.  Just wanted to see what others have don ...

MQ Buying More Companies.
Oct 03, 2011

Nuance bought WMX, MQ just bought E Trans and I think AllType recently.  Is it going to boil down to a dual between those 2 companies or does Transcend still enter into the equation? Scared to go to any other smaller company, you know they are all targeted to be bought by one of the above.  ...

Why MQ And Nuance Are Buying Everyone Out
Nov 22, 2011

so let's open our eyes.  MQ and Nuance are now the 2 biggest companies, and very known fact that they are offshoring everything they can.  I don't have firsthand information, this is just my theory.  they contact hospitals/clinics that they don't have contracts with and underbid them, probably to a point the hospital administrators are doing cartwheels.  As soon as they acquire the majority of the accounts that the smaller companies are now contracted with, suc ...

I currently have a company-provided computer that I work from (Webmedx). I think I remember somewhere a long time ago that I can have the option of buying the computer if I leave the company. Worth Buying Text Expander?

I have been working on trying to increase my speed with expanders.  So far I've been using Microsoft word to enter expanders but I'm wondering if that is enough.  I would like to have an expander for blocks of text.  Have any you purchased a text expander program and is it worth it?  I'm shocked at the price of a few of these programs and hesitate to purchase one. ...

Has Anyone Looked Into Buying Health Insurance Through The Marketplace Instead?
Nov 05, 2014

I mean, Nuance ins doesn't cover anything really. It's only in case of something catastrophic and then you'd better be able to pay $5000 out of pocket right? I mean we have to pay for everything until we hit $5000 just for the insurance to even start paying for anything. Right? Is Obamacare better than that? If it is, it's not affordable at all. ...

American MTSOs?
Jul 23, 2014

Okay, so are there ANY companies that are actually owned by Americans who live in America?  Everyone says they are only hiring from within the U.S., but that doesn't mean the owners are American.  Someone here said one company (Diskriter?) was purchased by "an Indian couple." Why wasn't it purchased by an American couple? Why aren't Americans buying MTSOs? What's up with that? ...

American Workers Have Changed--And Not For The Better
Nov 08, 2011

I've talked with several MTs recently who work for different companies. The companies have to send out reminders to the MTs that they are supposed to be at work at specific times. They also are having trouble with MTs just taking off without arranging for coverage of their accounts. The list goes on and on. What bothers me most though is the attitude of workers. Work was not easy years ago, but people did it with courage and integrity. You don't see much of that anymore.   &nbs ...

If American MTs Get QCd To Death, How In The World
Aug 03, 2013

are MTs from India doing well? I was born and raised in the U.S., I was an English/writing major, and I'm QCd into the ground, which makes me wonder - how the heck are people from India and other countries doing as MTs? What is going on here, seriously? ...

MM - Corporate/American Greed
Oct 17, 2013

All that matters to companies nowadays is how much money they can make for their stockholders and for their yearly bonuses.  They dont care about the American worker anymore.  In India, when they want to fire you, they have to take into account the family you are taking care of, will you be able to get another job.  America?  They will throw you out on the street without a notice and not give a darn. American Health Connections And Others
