Surprised and confused - Ratfarm

Posted: Aug 11, 2014

I am never OOW with Nuance.  I am busy all day long everyday.  It blows my mind to hear that people run out of work constantly and can't make money.  The money isn't great I know, but it's not bottom of the pile either.  I worked at a lot of places before and had problems with TMs, OOW, low compensation, horrible hours and schedule, but not here.  I must be lucky or something.  Surprised

It depends on the platform - AnotherAnon

[ In Reply To ..]
There are platforms that have accounts that cannot be offshored and have not been intergrated with the rest of the Nuance cesspool. If you are lucky enough to be on one of those, then the work is almost always there, especially afternoon/evening, and plenty of OT.

Yes, count yourself lucky for sure!

Why can't be offshored? - Meh

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm just wondering why some accounts can't be offshored? Is it because the dictations are too complicated? Do they just give the simple dictations to people overseas? (I think the government should set limit on corporations handing over so many jobs overseas. Why doesn't it do that?)

From what I understand - AnotherAnon

[ In Reply To ..]
These particular hospitals have stated no offshore in their contracts. It's been that way for a long time, even before Nuance, but that's not to say that it won't change down the line. Nothing is certain.

They cannot be offshored because - the client prohibits it.

[ In Reply To ..]
NM
And that stops Nuance from doing it? - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
I have my doubts.
Yes, it does stop them. Any company, in fact. A - client must agree to have
[ In Reply To ..]
their work sent offshore. This is part of their contract (whether they specifically forbid it).

Well, I was never OOW either - until

[ In Reply To ..]
little by little, bit by bit the work slowly disappeared overseas. More and more is going overseas everyday. Or, the hospital goes to EMR.

I'm glad you're doing well for now but I wouldn't hold my breath for that to continue indefinitely sorry to say.

All of the hospitals in my city, of which we have 5 good sized, have switched over to EMR so there's no longer even a chance at getting a job here in town. Little by little the hospitals are switching over to the new technology. Sad but true.

I was never OOW either - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I was never out of work either, on 3 accounts, until EMR. Now, Nuance wants me on 5 accounts, all currently OOW this morning. This is blatant overstaffing. They don't care as long as TAT is met.

Nuance runs their business poorly.

You are lucky! - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Veteran MTs with years of experience have left this company because of running out of work. More are talking about it. So if they want a bunch of newbies running the show and making blatant errors, go for it. If they can't appreciate us by at least making work available to us, they deserve what they get. I am so tired of caring anymore.

Just to clarify - AnotherAnon

[ In Reply To ..]
Although I do not have 25+ years experience, I have been an MT for 12+ years. Schooled at M-TEC (gone), worked at Transcend (gone), worked at Webmedex (gone) and now at Nuance. I've always worked acute care, so not a newbie by any stretch, just trying to survive like everyone else who's left.

I would call you a veteran MT. - Person to whom you responded.

[ In Reply To ..]
I consider a newbie someone with no experience or less than 2 years, perhaps at their first or second MT job.

Relative Newbie - Meh

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm a relative newbie, but I don't make blatant errors. My accuracy score is high. However, it's hard to be fast enough to make above minimal wage. I can understand why those with a lot of years of experience would run from this occupation, since experience is supposed to equal higher pay.

Things are different - Ratfarm

[ In Reply To ..]
Things are different now than they were when I started. I've been in this business almost 25 years. I remember making a base salary plus a line count, and then incentives were easy to obtain! There was no offshoring and everything was straight typing. I'm getting used to speech, but I wish things were like they used to be and we were paid for our expertise. Not everyone can do what we do and do it well.

Nuance - Liza

[ In Reply To ..]
I was with Nuance for over 3 years, and as a QC had the misfortune of upsetting one of the India supervisors at which point I was attacked on many fronts, eventually lost my job. My supervisor was so condescending/horrible/insulting termination procedure over the phone. I did some research, and it looks like Nuance is slowly replacing US personnel with India people. At last count, there were barely over 100 US MTs doing Nuance work, only 14 QC US people, many more in India who can work for less money.
How's M*Modal doing now that they've offshored? Anyone know?
Looking For A Job
Question for Liza. sm - Number of US MTs
[ In Reply To ..]
How do you know there are only 100 US MTs? Just wondering since you no longer work for the company. How are you privy to such information? I work for them and have no idea how many of us are left in the US. Heck, I don't even know the chain of command since we are mostly left in the dark. If your post is true, pretty scary stuff. Just asking a question.
Possible Answer... - I am not Liza.
[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe there were 100 at the time Liza left. I would bet there are thousands now with all the mergers and acquisitions; however, that is probably a temporary number until the rest of us are lost by attrition or whatever method so that they may protect where there loyalty lies, i.e., India, not America.
India - GRRRRR
[ In Reply To ..]
India will not only feel Karma's wrath for taking our jobs, but NUisANCE will feel it too for treating us so poorly.
Employers In India? - Meh
[ In Reply To ..]
Doesn't India have employers in their country who hire employees? If all the jobs in America (except those that have to hire people here, such as physical retail businesses) go out to India, soon there will be no more jobs for people in America. I recently installed McAfee Virus software, and when I called customer service, the lady on the telly was obviously Indian also with Indian accent. Dell computer also had Indian customer service. What's with everything going to India?
The basic numbers involved in India vs US workforce - are astonishing
[ In Reply To ..]
I can't remember the exact numbers, but essentially, the number of people in India who are educated and able to work is EQUAL TO the entire US population or something along those lines.

India's total population is 1.2 billion (second only to China).

USA population is 314 million.

Offshoring is not going away, much as we would like it to.
Until their next yearly monsoon comes along - and swamps all their infrastructure.

Or riot. Did anyone see the "30 Days" show - Val
[ In Reply To ..]
on outsourcing made by Morgan Spurlock? He had a series in which a person spent 30 days in another person's life. He sent a financial analyst to India to get a job (his job had been sent to India) and he got a job in a call center. I used to show it in my classes when I was teaching, always prefacing that I expected my FT time transcription would be sent to India and there was a good chance that my PT job (teaching) would be sent there also. The first event came true; the second not quite. I have not been teaching for a couple years now, but it was a b/c of a personal issue with the dept head. Anyway, long story short: the rich in India are not interested in improving infrastructure and this show showed the aftermath of a riot in India.

I got a new computer from MQ today!  It is a slimmer CPU that can either stand or lay on a desk, its really small, AND a flat screen monitor and these awesome headphones with volume control on the headset!  I'm so happy!  (Now if I had some work to do...)  haha!  ...

Boy was i surprised today.  I work as a coder for a large midwestern teaching hospital network/medical college.  We have an aggregate of about 900 inpatient beds, 160-some outpatient clinics on our campus, plus multiple satellite sites, 3 ERs and several urgent cares. a cancer center, a heart hospital, and 2 ambulatory surgery centers - so lots of transcription.  Today at our CODING meeting while discussing some upcoming changes to our epic system and striving for improved documen ...

No Longer Surprised But Always Still Upset--sm
Nov 06, 2014

Yes, I have seen this enough times that it no longer surprises me.  There were 18 reports on my primary.  I have an hour left of my shift.  When I anticipated downloading the next one, all 18 were gone, gone, gone.  It is upsetting.  I would try adjusting my schedule but it would do no good, there normally is too little work during that time as it is.  I already will be taking about 3 hours of PTO for being OOW on Sunday.  It would be 4 but I have made up some ...

Just Kind Of Surprised With MTs And "computer Issues"
Oct 08, 2012

I am really surprised at the number of MTs who have been on recently asking about which companies provide computers.  The advantage to having a company-provided computer is that if something happens to said computer, then the company has to provide technical support or provide you with a replacement computer.  Precyse, the last I knew, sends out a Netbook computer, so you still need a monitor, etc and there is no way that you can load your "own programs" or even be able to access the i ...

I'M SOO CONFUSED!

Certainly nothing new to be confused over QA, but this one is really confusing me.  Perhaps I missed the memo.  I had mL changed to cc by QA.  Yes, dictator stated cc, but I surely do remember being told to use mL instead so why was it changed to cc....not sure.  The other change was 12 mm changed to 12-mm.  Confused by this one as well.....that's my typing vent for the day!  Thanks for listening : ) ...

NJA --- I Am So Confused
Dec 27, 2011

OK I get NJA, change Schedule Source to work availability, then I get a job 10 minutes into it, now what?  I know I don't get paid for 10 minutes of NJA/work availability.  Clock out and back in under production?  Will I get in trouble for the 10 minutes of work availability?  Then if I get NJA again, clock back out of production and back into work availability and SEE if it goes the full 15 minutes???????????  I need a tutorial on this I guess.  Any suggestion ...

Thanks For All The Help, But I Am Still Confused
Dec 29, 2011

the posters were as well.  You have to punch out of production to change to "work availability" and I was under the impression you can't type while in "work availability" so you have to clock out and back in under "production" if you get a job during that 15 minute wait period.  I am in agreement that it is ridiculous, but if I think the whole day is going to be slow I just want to wait the required 15 minutes and be RELEASED for the rest of my shift, however, it is so confu ...
