CCS exam - I have finished schooling for the ICD9 - Coder to be

Posted: Mar 18, 2014

I have finished schooling for the ICD9, and am getting ready to start an adjunct ICD10 class.  The AHIMA is changing the test to ICD10 at the end of April.  I wonder if there will be any ICD9 on there at all.  Also, for the coders out there that have trained with the ICD10, do you find it will be a better system than ICD9?  I am excited to learn it.    Thank you, PJ

I don't think there will be any ICD-9, based on my reading of the website. The clue is the fact that only the ICD-10-CM and PCS code sets are required. Well, along with a CPT.

I think ICD-10-CM is really nice. It is mostly just a numbering system that allows for expansion, and it is already somewhat expanded to about 68K codes. The diseases are still the same diseases, but you can code more information about them.

ICD-10-PCS is a little scary, but it really allows you to be very specific about exactly what the procedure was. Coding a procedure is a decision tree sort of thing. You choose the first number, then that choice gives you further choices, and that choice gives you some more, etc., all the way to the end.

You will use the diagnosis codes for everything, but the procedures only for inpatient. Outpatient procedures still get coded in CPT.

Thank you Ms. K! :) - OP

ICD9 Vs ICD 10
Feb 25, 2015

Some advice please...Looking into the Medical Coding field and wondering is it beneficial to just focus on learning ICD-10 or is ICD-9 needed before learning ICD-10.  What are or will be the differences between them?  Would it be too confusing to a new coder to learn ICD-9 and transition into ICD-10 so quickly?  I currently do not plan to have training finished before October, focusing on Ant/Phy and Medical terminology first.  Thank you. ...

Question About Schooling
Dec 28, 2011

I am an RN but haven't worked as an RN for 20 years, have attended job fairs and pretty much have been told there are no jobs, nothing I can do after being out of the field this long (even taking the refresher courses). I left the field to be an MT,  as I could do it from home and still have some supervision of my children (I am CMT and have been an MT for 20 years). With the continued loss of income, I am seriously considering coding.  I have 2 questions for everyone, I know I wi ...

Is All Of This Schooling Worth It Or Not???
Dec 28, 2011

I am just wondering if this schooling has all been worth it.  I am not seeing alot of happy people on this site.  I have been a graduate of medical in 1986 and since gone on to manicuring for the sake of flexible schedule while my child was in latter years of school. I pursued a course with Mt Professionals to be able to catch up and with skills and am still in my third year of school on part-time basis waiting to pass to become a paid employee with one error.  I am getting really ...

Schooling Questions

I am considering the Medical Billing/Coding program at Career Step.  I know someone who works there and they can get me almost half off tuition.  I want to know what any of you think about Career Step? I went to Andrews for MT school and I think it was great, I just don't know if I want to go that route for coding, the Career Step program is for combined billing/coding. ...

Can I Work As A MT If I Do Not Finish My Schooling?
Aug 01, 2014

Just wondering, does anyone know if I can work as a MT if I do not complete my schooling? I have about a month and a half of MT schooling left and I was wondering if I can do MT work? Iam at the point where I do not know if this is the right thing for me or not. Maybe if I can do some actual work it would help me decide to complete my schooling or try something else. Anyone else in my boat? Thanks!!! ...

Looking For Advice On Completion Of Schooling Or Lack There Of...
Nov 08, 2010

Here is the situation.  I am currently going through an MT course, I am in the Beginning MT practicum and then I have Intermediate MT practicum to complete.  When I originally signed up for the course, I signed up for the "complete course" (Intermediate was the final module) in order to receive my certification of completion.  I have recently found out, quite by accident, that my school has now added 2 additional modules to complete the course for an additional charge of ...

Just Finished The 6.1 Training, What-the?
Sep 07, 2010

Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't help think that the training person on those videos is trying to sell used cars.  The tone of her voice sounds so fake - and some of those incredible words she used, like "streamlining" or describing this exceptionally wonderful program (not her words, but something like it).  It was my impression that she got the job to train us 3000 MTs because of her salesman-like attitude, not teaching expertise.  She fumbled around, not very profes ...

Just Finished MT Training
Aug 30, 2011

I am an LPN who is currently taking classes to become an RN. I just finished my final in my MT course that  I took online through US Career Institute. I stumbled upon this site when researching for an at home job for MT's. I was going to take the certificaton through AHDI thinking that would help give me a boost but I saw a post saying it was not really a big deal if you take it. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what is the best company to work from home for. ...

I Just Can't Believe That I Just Finished An 8-1/2 Hour
Mar 29, 2013

$66.03.  I worked my BUTT off tonight for $8.25 an hour.  Back in the day, those 1400 lines would have grossed at LEAST $116 for the day, AND, I wouldn't have worked 1/4 as hard then as I did tonight for that measly 66 bucks.  Doctors and lawyers are paid for the education over and over and over again.  WHY is it so different for MTs?  Twenty-two years of this and I can't believe I'm reduced to this.  Wow...... ...

Newbie Who Just Finished School
Nov 06, 2009

I just finished MT school/training and am beginning to look for jobs. I live in a small town so I'm sure I'll do work from home.  However, I am as nervous as heck because I don't know if I can manage 98% on most tests.  I haven't yet taken an employment test, but by the time I finished school I was hovering around 96-97 and just couldn't seem to get any better.  Do I even have a chance here?  ...

Finished My First Week At My New Job And I Love It!
Nov 08, 2009

Well, I started my new job as an office assistant and I love it.  It was nice to know that when I got home, I was done for the day.  I did not have to work into the night and worry about making my lines.  On Friday, we had absolutely no patients scheduled and no doctors were in the clinic and I still got paid.  If I had been doing transcription, I would have been without pay for the entire weekend and would have had to compete with everyone else on my account on Monday to try ...

Can You Take The RHIT Or CCS Having Just Finished Coding School?
