Back to missing lines - Massively cheated

Posted: Oct 26, 2009

MQ uses Instant Text for their line counts.  I knew i had it for word expanders but prefer to use my own WEs.  Well, they have a line counter too but I haven't had the time to check it out.

So, today, I took about 5 documents, copied and pasted them into Word.  MQ requires 65 CPL, Word requires 73, so I should have come out behind in Word each time.  Instead, I came out behind in every document, the least being amount 11 lines and the most was 29.  These were all relatively short documents.

I suggest you all start tracking things from now on.  I already sent my supervisor.

how do you do that? I am missing more and more

Missing Lines - Line Misser

[ In Reply To ..]
I have 2 line counting programs - Instant Text, which is what MQ uses and I also use word. Last night, I pulled up several documents and copied over to word. Every single one came up short. That really says something considering word requires more characters per line.

I haven't had enough time to familiarize myself with the IT program yet so I haven't run anything thru it.

In Word, you need to look at - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
the 'Characters with spaces' under Tools/Word Count, and divide that number by 65 to get your actual line count. That should match MQ's count exactly as we are paid on a 65-character line including spaces.

I haven't figured out instant text yet but there's something I'd like to share with you via E-mail.

Thanks!

cheating us, but I was not sure how. I thought they might not be counting spaces and did not tell anyone. I currently have no program that allows for an accurate line count. I have found it suspicious that I have lost 20K over the years since we went on line with DQS. I know they have cheated us in the past, paying back the money to the MT (not the ADHI)with a vague reason as to the check and without admitting guilt. There is no doubt in my mind they have found a way to inaccurately account for our lines (cheat us), but will find a way and/or loophole to not pay us back, but instead settle for a much lesser amount with an organization. Any recommendation to a program with an accurate line count would be appreciated. I think we should document as much as possible. CYA. Caution, not proof read, it is late and I am tired.

Line count off? I am making less in the last few weeks. - Sunshine

[ In Reply To ..]
Just in the last few weeks, I am making 2-3 dollars less. I am working just as hard or harder and for some reason when I divide my line count by my hours, my hourly wage is so much less. It happened right after an upgrade that was done a few weeks ago.

I wish somebody would blow the whistle on this company.

I noticed the same thing! You know how you - kiki

[ In Reply To ..]
just KNOW how much per hour you can make on average? After that upgrade, I too noticed that I consistently make about $2 to $3 an hour less no matter what.

Copy/paste your report into - sm

Word. Click Tools/Word Count on the menu bar. Look at 'Characters with spaces'. Divide that by 65. Compare that number to what your line count shows on DQM for the report. Mine was correct.

Do we get paid for anything in the ADT or is it just text? - Worker Bee

[ In Reply To ..]
or is that something we need to find out. I'm very interested in getting line counting software. IMO, I think we're getting hosed.

Nope, everything we spend time typing in the ADT and CC's, etc., - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
we aren't getting paid for, yet we're REQUIRED to enter that information. That in itself sounds illegal. We're paid per character, yet they require us to enter characters we aren't paid for.... go figure....

I just checked and ASR job on Word and a typing job on Word - outta here

[ In Reply To ..]
and mine came up 1 line short on each. I have the new version of Word (2007) and if you go to the Review>proofing>word count, it gives you the total characters with spaces. Then you divide by 65.

I know 1 line short doesn't seem like much, but yesterday it would have been $2.25. Per pay period it would be $24.75, per month would be $49.50.

Imagine if that's no mistake. In a year I would be short almost $600.00. And if you multiply that by all of us, imagine!!!

I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for now, and check 4 or 5 reports a day and keep a log for a month. If it continues to happen, I'm going to bring it to my supervisor's attention and escalate it.

I'll probably get fired for questioning the Great and Powerful Q, but then I could always sue them!!!

By the way, it sucks that we don't get paid for ADT and cc's, yet they want that to be perfect and sometimes that takes me longer than the job itself. They never put the burden on the dictator to actually put in the correct information, instead we get slammed for it. And if the ADT isn't correct on an audit, we get a critical error and lose our monthly bonus. That, I would think, is illegal. In addition to the fact that on audits, they only check the worst dictators.

They always figure out a way for US to pay for dictator mistakes. They never, ever, ever say a thing to the dictator or to the facility.

You're so way off. Look at the total characters including - spaces and divide by 65. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I routinely check my line counts and they have always matched.

It sounds like you're not sure of how to compare the information.

How can I be so way off? - Worker Bee

[ In Reply To ..]
I cut and pasted the text of my report (the stuff we're paid for) into Word. Went to line count. It gives options for characters with spaces and without spaces. I chose with spaces. I took that number and divided it by 65. I came up 1 line short. Period. How can that be off? It was accurate. I don't doubt it at all!

The example I gave of $2.25 in one day, multiplied out was completely hypothetical.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, just to be fair, but if I find that it is happening every day, I'll report it. I have no doubt about that either.

QA markers and line counts - Renee

[ In Reply To ..]
My line counts have been exactly right, rounding up and down, as long as I check the ones that have already been through QA. If QA markers are still in the report you are checking, it will give you a higher count in Word, which will not be the true count. The more markers in the report, the further the count will be off.
QA markers - jenn
[ In Reply To ..]
Just out of curiosity, why would QA markers give a higher count in word. (It would seem just the opposite would be true.)

Missing My YOG Bonus. $400 For 50,000 Lines.

Yep, no accuracy percentage, if you worked for them you were good and they knew it, not need to prove yourself. No minimum line counts per hour, work and do your daily minimum whenever at your pace, as long as it got done. No dings for sending to QA or asking for clarification.  No outrageous taxes taken out of bonus, earned $400 got $400.  Sure do miss those days when we were treated as adults who could be trusted to do a good job.  ...

Giving Lines Back
Sep 13, 2012

I just took a job that said they paid 3.2 cpl for edited and 6.8 for transcribed.  Almost everything is edited.  Now they want me to divide my edited line count by half and claim that as my edited line count, not the total number of edited lines I do.  Has anyone else been told this kind of stuff?  I can't believe it!  If I do this I only get paid 1.6 cpl for my edited lines.  I am flabergasted!  I can't live off that in America, who could? ...

Is It True That FOCUS, Only Counts Half Of Your Lines When Calculating VR Lines?
Jan 30, 2012

if you make 4 cents per line at 1000 lines a day, they really calculate it at 500 lines per day x 4 cents, making it really 2 cents per line for the full 1000.   I heard this, and I am really interested in knowing if it is true. ...

Told Nuance Was Overcharging For Lines, Now Lines Drastically Reduced
May 02, 2012

My main account was a good one, and the lines were very good, mostly ER work. I have been on this account for over a year and a half now. We recently received an e-mail stating that Nuance had discovered that the line count was charging incorrectly, as instituted by them, and they had been crediting us with MORE lines than we were actually doing and overcharging the client. Now get this, they informed us that they would not make US pay it back, for their mistake, but that our new lines would re ...

TransTech Lines - Required Hours But Are Short Lines?
Jun 10, 2011

What do you do when you have the required hours but are short lines? I got an email that I need to "make plans to have my shortage made up." The only problem is that I'm up to date with my hours for the pay period so far. The other problem is that I have plans Saturday night and Sunday (both being my scheduled time off) that don't include TransTech. It's getting harder and harder to defend this company when they can't hold up their end of the agreement and continually ...

TransTech Lines - How Many Lines Do You Average During The Day/week?
Jan 19, 2011

Just wondering if the TT MTs would like share ... how many lines do you average during the day/week?  I'm doing about 9,000 to 10,000 a week and wonder if I should be pushing myself more.  How much of your count is VR?  I do probably 15% traditional and 85% VR but that, of course, varies week to week.   ...

TransTech Lines - How Many Lines Do You Average Per Day
Jul 13, 2011

How many lines do you average per day - VR and traditional?  I know it's been VERY slow lately, but when things are going well, how many lines do you normally get? I'm trying to figure out where the average numbers are.  For me, I do about 350 trad and about 1400 VR in 8 hours. Well, my timesheet says 8 hours, but my clock says that number MAY(!) be a little higher.  Again, these are numbers I pull when things are going well and I'm not waiting for work to download. Missing Pay=No Work????

Missing HPs When Typing DSs?
Oct 02, 2010

Okay, I have had the suspicion that MQ programmed something when you bring up old reports when typing a discharge summary that the H&P doesn't show up.  Today, the dictator doing the DS plainly stated that she was reading right off the H&P.  I went to check in the old reports to maybe get some quick lines, but it wasn't there...as usual.  I typed what she said and realized that I had already typed this before and that I was the one that typed the original H&P ...

Word Missing
Mar 16, 2011

When you suspect that a word may have been omitted from dictation, do you make a note for this to be reviewed or do you think that is overstepping your bounds and basically saying the doctor made a mistake?  For instance, this ESL doc said "Bacterial endocarditis is not particularly recommended, but the patient has had Augmentin or amoxicillin and may be given a single dose.."  I suspect he forgot to say bacterial endocarditis "prophylaxis" is not particularly recommended...etc.  ...
